So, opinion on my attacking trio: Hagi - Zico - Finney?

Nicely shaped. Zico obviously the star but nevertheless a strong team player to complement Hagi's individualism. I had earmarked Finney and he will provide an orthodox wide threat while being sufficiently multi-faceted to contribute across the front line.

Gullit fits into that midfield nicely indeed, absolutely a key part of Milan's defensive setup because of his all-round game and intelligent pressing high up and he'll do the same here. You'll need some great wingers to take advantage of that combined aerial threat though! Where do you go next, get the wingers in or leave yourself short at fullback so Giggs and Matthews can tear you apart while Baresi and Figueroa are helpless...

Need to have a think really. I have a few full backs in mind who may last though.

Goes much, much further.

The main Brazilian newspaper had the main page and backpage printed as a poster on the morning of the game. "Congratulations Champions!", showing the Brazil team photo.

Varela went to buy as many papers as he could find, made sure every one of his teammates had seen them, then took them into a room, lay them on the floor, and invited them to piss on them

Before the game started there were massive ceremonies, the Major of Rio made a speech, also congratulating the Champions and going on about the fabulous stadium he had built for that very special occasion. The Brazilian players didn't find it odd, didn't feel the pressure yet, they had shat on everyone along the way anyway. Meanwhile, Varela just stood there listening.

Soon after the game started, Bigode (their left back) fouls Ghiggia (our right winger). Next time Bigode gets the ball Varela goes in like a bulldozer and knocks him off the pitch, stands on top of him pointing his finger Keano-style and tells him in inequivocal terms: "You don´t touch the little fella or I'll wipe you out. Clear?". Ghiggia was given the freedom of the flank, assisted our first goal and scored the second.

Then the goal came, the complaints about a non-existent offside. The English referee not understanding a word and calling for the interpreter... Next thing you knew the Brazilians were not exuberant, but worried it would be disallowed.

Halfway through the second half, Jules Rimet exits his seat and goes to prepare himself for the ceremony. He finds "1950 - Brazil" had been carved into it in advance but didn't think much of it. The stadium had gone silent, but he was too busy rehearsing his speech...

Then out he came to find a dead stadium, confusion all around, and in a crowd of people the giant "Black Chief" emerges, grabs the trophy and leaves him standing there, as confused as everyone else. Later on, back in his senses, his conclusion would be: "they were born to be Champions".

Four years later, Uruguay's World Cup undefeated run would come to an end. In the semifinal, in extra-time, after a 2-2 draw in normal time against Hungary. Varela had got injured in the 4-2 quarter against England. Had he been available... We will never know.:annoyed:

Thats fantastic stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Obviously when you find out more about these older players you can see why they're so highly rated. Stuff of legends.

Something like this so far..

Romario

Left -- Cruyff -- Figo

Redondo -- Mid

Left -- Desailly -- Moore -- Right

Keeper

Although Moore's legend has been enriched slightly beyond his abilities thanks to '66, I like the complementary partnership with Desailly.

so you would rate ahead of a lot of others picked so far? I would have had him as a first-round pick or second at max if we are really doing an All-time draft

No idea, don't know much about the chap other than what you can read on the internet. That's the issue here, being an all-time draft makes all players available but there's no rule stating all the eras have to be represented, and certainly no guarantee that voters will appreciate the older names.

Ultimately, the XI has to make sense. The assessment shouldn't be based on how many fancy names or obscure players someone assembles but how they work together. As a matter of principle, I wouldn't pick a player I wasn't 100% clear on what he was all about and whether he would fit with those around him. That is very difficult to pinpoint reading biographies and stats.

I would very happily fall on my sword sticking up for a player I think the world of, but not for some chap I frankly have no idea about.

shit, thought he slipped under the radar.

Here's the list jake.

Nice pick, Tigana was one we were looking at to partner Neeskens but decided to go elsewhere..

Some very interesting squads developing from a neutral point of view. Particularly intrigued by Cutch, Brwned and MJJs so far. Also Stobzilla's midfield

Although Moore's legend has been enriched slightly beyond his abilities thanks to '66, I like the complementary partnership with Desailly.

I thought a lot about who to partner Moore with and since I did not watch that much of him it was a hard task. But I feel happy having Desailly with Moore as my central partnership!

Just watched videos of England in the 50's. Damn it, England could play pass and move style. What happened since?
You can say that all the way up to 1970, really. Went seriously tits up after that WC in terms of the football played and quality of player.
continuing on my question regarding picks from the 30s, I am very surprised that a certain player hasn't been picked especially considering his nationality. But then I guess there is no way of knowing how good he was other than for reading
There are several from the 30's still not picked who have every business being in the draft.

Ferenc Puskas

 Brilliant!

It's scandalous that Brehme has lasted this long!

There's been just 5 fullbacks to finish in the top 3 Ballon d'Or and 3 of them are German - delighted to take the most versatile one halfway in. Imagine being the #9 in a side with Brehme, Giggs and Matthews supplying you with top class wingplay all day long. Just need to find the right man for that role now.

Marco Tardelli

World_Cup_1982_280_1043416a.jpg

My engine room of Neeskens - Tardelii is complete. Can easily cover 3 man midfields with their running (and Bonieks!!)

Delighted to bring in Tardelli, both do the work of two men in midfield.

Well, that was bad! Tardelli was going to be my partner for Redondo.. now I need to rethink a thing or two here.

Time to get a bit of steel in the team, a ball winner, a leader and a bit of a dog. Will do the ugly stuff. I always knew Bremner was a great player but doing some research, I didn’t quite realise how highly he’s rated. Not just a hard man but he could really play as well.
Captain of the great Leeds teams of the 60’s and 70’s. Voted their greatest ever player. Footballer of the year 1970 and once came 5th in Ballon d’Or.
I put him in the same bracket as Souness and Keane but many rate Bremner higher, which I didn’t expect. (Old Leeds fans probably, but still, a top player to have in midfield.)

“Little Billy Bremner is the captain of the crew
For the sake of Leeds United he would break himself in two
His hair is red and fuzzy and his body's black and blue”

While we're waiting we might as well post some videos of the lesser known players in your team just so everyone has a grasp of what they'll offer the team...

"Stanley Matthews Final" - reminiscent of Garrincha in '58

Di Stéfano v Nice - with the combination play for 1st goal with Gento at 2:00 and headed goal from a right wing cross at 3:30 being the kind of thing I'll be looking for from Don Alfredo, linking up in the attacking areas with Giggs and Matthews rather than dominating the midfield. Keane'll give him the licence to score and assist in every game.

Falcão (ignore 1st min, 2:15, 3:00 & 4:30 )

Carlos Valderrama.

Also I'm out. PMing my pick to thisistheone. Somebody PM dannistelrooy.
