Thanks.

EDIT: Never mind. I'll just stick with him. He's kinda give my team an All Time Draft feeling.

Do it, it's fair considering Brwned did it before.

No more though, whether the next guy has gone or not (for all we know he could be changing his picks as a result). It may prompt comments...

We need to draw the line somewhere, and the line should be once posted it's over.

Just watched videos of England in the 50's. Damn it, England could play pass and move style. What happened since?

Surely on of the greatest right backs to ever play. Brazil and Milan legend, 3-time World Cup winner Cafu.

I am liking how my team is shaping up now after those two picks. I reckon I can get a couple of steals in the next few rounds when people get the mad rush on keepers. That can't be too far off so I'm glad I got the best one in early.

 Did want him but unsure how he would have complemented Passarella.

Deschamps was one of the most consistent players of all time, and has marked some of the greatest players in the world out of it, was decent on the ball too.

I wouldn't have Deschamps in an all time XI at all, let alone as 3rd pick. The rest of your team looks pretty good though.

Batistuta and Ruud Gullit!

Two of my all time favourites, especially Gullit. A drawback in getting Neeskens for me was that we couldn't get him, though in truth there is much better complimentary partners for Pele out there.

continuing on my question regarding picks from the 30s, I am very surprised that a certain player hasn't been picked especially considering his nationality. But then I guess there is no way of knowing how good he was other than for reading

Claudio Gentile

Ruthless man-marker who was comfortable right across the back-line.

I know who you mean and I think he will go soon. I wouldn't be able to fit him in my team with Diego and Bobby around.

person after you hasn't picked, and Brwned did it too so I think its fair game.

Bollocks! I picked Giggs and posted Giggs' picture - I was always picking him. It was just a mixup on my part. Put Giggs into the player list at the start of my post, then changed my mind to Rio, then changed it back to Giggs and just forgot to edit the player list. I didn't change my pick after it was made at all and I don't think anyone should be allowed to.

I pick Marcel Desailly.

Something like this so far..

Romario

Left -- Cruyff -- Figo

Redondo -- Mid

Left -- Desailly -- Moore -- Right

Keeper

Same formation that I'm going for EDogen. You're looking good to be honest. Full backs will be key to us.

Yup, looking great. We were gutted to miss out on Figo.

As for Varela... aware that he's one of his countries best ever but I'm always a bit weary of picking Uruguayan's because of the standard of competition they faced, or lack of, when they won their World Cups. How good were they really?

As for Varela... aware that he's one of his countries best ever but I'm always a bit weary of picking Uruguayan's because of the standard of competition they faced, or lack of, when they won their World Cups. How good were they really?

Who cares when he's got stories like this backing him up!

Going into the last match in the final four-team pool needing only a draw against the Uruguayans, the Brazilians were supremely confident of fulfilling their dream. Even their opponents were fearful of what might happen, so much so in fact that members of the national FA purportedly asked the team to do what they could to avoid losing by six goals. “Four is acceptable,” they are believed to have said.

Refusing to accept the match was a foregone conclusion, Varela told his team-mates to forget what they had heard and to focus their efforts on winning the game. Lining up in the tunnel, waiting to step out in front of a capacity 170,000 crowd, the captain had one last message for his team-mates.

“Put all those people out of your minds, don’t look up,” he urged them. “The game is played down on the pitch and if we win, nothing’s going to happen, just as it’s never happened before. Those people don’t count.”

The skipper’s motivational words seemed to do the trick, with Uruguay holding the hosts in a goalless first half. Yet, two minutes after the restart, Friaca put the favourites ahead and seemingly on course to the victory everyone expected - everyone except Varela that is.

“When they scored, Varela ran 30 yards to get hold of the ball and argue with the referee about a non-existent offside,” recalled the late Roque Maspoli, Uruguay’s goalkeeper on that unforgettable afternoon.

Years later, in one of his infrequent interviews, the vociferous Varela explained the reasons behind his outburst: “I knew they would go on and thrash us if we didn’t cool the game down. All I wanted to do was delay the restart.

"I took the discussion as far as it would go, to the point that they had to get an interpreter so I could talk to the referee. The stadium fell silent and that’s when I knew we could win the game.”

What followed went exactly as the cunning Varela had planned. With Uruguay suddenly growing in confidence, the skipper took control of the midfield and Juan Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia scored late goals to turn the game around and silence the masses. Against all the odds, La Celeste had won their second world title.

I might like mightberight's team the best. There's an understated brilliance and cohesiveness there.

Great story. mightberight would be wise to include that in his team notes if possible. Voters need all the insight they can get when it comes to the older players.

Remarkably, that trick holding up the ball went on to help Brazil win their first World Cup. While Brazil mourned and the pundits reacted hysterically to the Maracanazo, one Brazilian picked up on what had happened and learned from it. Four years later, Sweden opens the scoring in the final, the Brazilians must have thought "Oh feck! Not again!", the way they've done for decades when faced with possible defeat. Up comes Didi, picks up the ball, cools it down and reminds everyone it's just a goal, there's 86 minutes left, and they are the better team.

You could write a book on Varela's performance that day. In fact, a Uruguayan football historian -Franklin Morales- actually has "Maracana: The labyrinth of character". One of the best football books I ever read.

I know who you mean and I think he will go soon. I wouldn't be able to fit him in my team with Diego and Bobby around.

well you could still classify him as a centre-forward, but he would be difficult to fit, since if I remember correctly he played like a creator. however, he wouldn't be a bad choice to lead the line.

however i am not sure we are talking about the same guy

I'm curious so I'll pm you who I thought you meant.

Fullback---Baresi-----Figueroa---fullback
WM--------Voronin---Mosopust--WM
------------------Gullit---------------
---------------Batistuta--------------

That's going to be hard to break down.

Gullit fits into that midfield nicely indeed, absolutely a key part of Milan's defensive setup because of his all-round game and intelligent pressing high up and he'll do the same here. You'll need some great wingers to take advantage of that combined aerial threat though! Where do you go next, get the wingers in or leave yourself short at fullback so Giggs and Matthews can tear you apart while Baresi and Figueroa are helpless...

So, opinion on my attacking trio: Hagi - Zico - Finney?

Loads of versatility and great combination play there. Some even say Finney was the better player than Matthews although I suspect that has more to do with Finney having the wider range of skills than him being a more dangerous player. Looks great.

Great story. mightberight would be wise to include that in his team notes if possible. Voters need all the insight they can get when it comes to the older players.

Goes much, much further.

The main Brazilian newspaper had the main page and backpage printed as a poster on the morning of the game. "Congratulations Champions!", showing the Brazil team photo.

Varela went to buy as many papers as he could find, made sure every one of his teammates had seen them, then took them into a room, lay them on the floor, and invited them to piss on them

Before the game started there were massive ceremonies, the Major of Rio made a speech, also congratulating the Champions and going on about the fabulous stadium he had built for that very special occasion. The Brazilian players didn't find it odd, didn't feel the pressure yet, they had shat on everyone along the way anyway. Meanwhile, Varela just stood there listening.

Soon after the game started, Bigode (their left back) fouls Ghiggia (our right winger). Next time Bigode gets the ball Varela goes in like a bulldozer and knocks him off the pitch, stands on top of him pointing his finger Keano-style and tells him in inequivocal terms: "You don´t touch the little fella or I'll wipe you out. Clear?". Ghiggia was given the freedom of the flank, assisted our first goal and scored the second.

Obdulio and Ghiggia after the final whistle
Finale_esultanze.jpg

Then the goal came, the complaints about a non-existent offside. The English referee not understanding a word and calling for the interpreter... Next thing you knew the Brazilians were not exuberant, but worried it would be disallowed.

Halfway through the second half, Jules Rimet exits his seat and goes to prepare himself for the ceremony. He finds "1950 - Brazil" had been carved into it in advance but didn't think much of it. The stadium had gone silent, but he was too busy rehearsing his speech...

Then out he came to find a dead stadium, confusion all around, and in a crowd of people the giant "Black Chief" emerges, grabs the trophy and leaves him standing there, as confused as everyone else. Later on, back in his senses, his conclusion would be: "they were born to be Champions".

Four years later, Uruguay's World Cup undefeated run would come to an end. In the semifinal, in extra-time, after a 2-2 draw in normal time against Hungary. Varela had got injured in the 4-2 quarter against England. Had he been available... We will never know.:annoyed:
