It's been a truly gripping game with two of the best side's in footballing history locking horns and there'd been nothing to separate them.
Just as Batistuta powered through his opponents to give his side the lead, his fellow countryman, Lionel Messi, would be at the other end mere moments later providing trickery and technique to claw things back.
From the outset it was a gripping tactical battle. The only question on the fans lips is why KM left Sergio Busquets on the bench? We hadn't been made aware of any player carrying a knock from qualifying, so it seemed odd that the current generation's best defensive midfielder could not find a place in the team. In the early goings, paceme's side utterly dominated possession, with Schuster in particularly enjoying a great deal of freedom coming from deep to support attack.
The error was eventually addressed though and gave KM the balance it badly needed, as well as the assurance for others to push higher and allow Busquets to shield and pass from deep. It was also a little surprising that Arjen Robben was never tasked with a role from the bench, since his pace, quick feet and ability to turn a game in the blink of an eye has been a trademark of his for almost a decade.
The move to introduce Busquets though did allow Nedved to feature in a more familiar role. Adept at just about anywhere in midfield, it is starting from those central positions and drifting wide that we saw him produce his best football. This switch allowed KM to compete with paceme's congested midfield.
paceme side - and midfield particularly - showed fantastic balance throughout. The diamond in the middle provided great stability and on several occasions the source of goals for his side. The only question marks remain over the supply to Gullit and Batistuta from wide areas, though Gullit managed to take up all kinds of positions to create openings, whilst from full-back Amoros has always been used to playing in a team with a narrow midfield anyway and Gordillo had no problems supporting out wide.
We saw a couple of British goalkeepers between the sticks and both were huge stars in the mid 20th century. Both goalkeepers pulled off a string of excellent saves throughout and performed as consistently as expected.
The game was, as one spectator described it, like a seesaw. paceme commented that he had the best defence in the draft and wouldn't change any players he had there. That was quite a statement as many would even question whether he had the best defence in this game, such is the quality of both sides. Certainly with Lizarazu, Scirea, Djalma Santos and eventually Sammer playing back there, it was a tough call to say who kept it tightest. The scores would suggest it was even, just as it was everywhere.
Ultimately, despite a couple of KM's initial decisions with the lineup, they were rectified and the versatility in his side proved vital.
But it all boiled down to one moment of genius to separate two great sides. KM had shored up his back line and had a strong midfield to rely on to keep a hold of things before the final whistle. Schuster, Socrates and Masopust pressed and made life difficult, but when Nedved found Messi in space wide right, he'd isolated Gordillo and made a run on his opponent inside, jinking past the Spaniard, he exchanged passes with Boszik which took out Voronin and had Figueroa back-pedaling. Before Baresi could come to properly shut down the little Argentine, Messi had taken another step infield and curled the ball past the AC Milan legend, leaving Gregg scrambling and stretching, but to no avail as the ball flew into the top corner.
Messi had won it for KM, with absolute heartbreak for paceme's team.
An unforgettable contest, but KM advances to the quarter finals by the narrowest of margins.
