All time British+Irish Fantasy Draft

Woohoo. Someone who rates him as highly as I do. I never had the balls to make that statement though  but tried my best through my write up which I suspect some might have even thought was overblown or tongue in cheek.

Time to bring out the big statements now, I reckon.

This is a player recognized by a whole host of legends (including Stan Matthews and Tom Finney) as probably the most complete British defender in history. And a perfectly "un-British" one to boot, in terms of on-the-ball skills.

First Match...

We saw recently what the caf thought.. it's Part II now..

It's Edgar vs Annah

I'll certainly try. I've been holding back the one, obvious remark to be made every time someone has portrayed this or that or the other one as the "second best defender" in the draft, that is, the one behind Moore. Franklin would be that man: He was Moore before Moore, only even...moore...complete.

In terms of natural talent, he's second to none in this draft. An English Baresi, or Scirea, or Figueroa.

where would you rank Ferdinand in terms of all time greats? I think Moore might be a tad overrated personally.

Rio is right up there, clearly.

I'm not for one for lists or "tiers", really. But I don't think Moore is overrated - his status as one of the very best central defenders ever is well deserved, I think. Rio would be below him, but not by much. In his pomp Rio was one of the best defenders in the world - and he remained at that level for several years. That puts him in a certain bracket - a pretty exclusive one.

I didn't see him personally but have a feeling him winning the worldcup might have inflated the view on him like John Terry the lion of England is going to be thought of as the best cb of his generation in fifty, sixty odd years if we are still alive while rio is the only defender to come close to nesta who is among the all time great so was wondering who really was better.

if that makes any sense.

Undoubtedly the WC matters in terms of boosting his reputation - not least given that he didn't sweep up loads up trophies besides that. But that's the nature of the thing. I'd say that you have to look at what sort of player he actually was, though, more than anything - and take into consideration how he is rated by football writers, fans, historians and contemporary players. That matters more than the actual trophy - and the testaments are clear.

As for Terry, I doubt he will be recognized as the best CB of his generation by posterity. He should be recognized as one of the best - because he was, like him or not - but surely not THE best.

I hope you are right mate but gotta feeling because of his style of play(better YouTube package),numeous uefa defender of the year awards and lionheart moniker he is going to be one overrated fecker.

Oh no she didn't! We've only got three quarters of Celtic's Lisbon Lions midfield plus Becks, Ince and Lampard!

You missed the point. I wasn't having a go at your midfield but indicating when Baxter and Gazza don't turn up at the game having preferred to go on a pub crawl (midfieldless), he may yet have an upside in that their rival manager is also a no show if it's you or Chester (managerless).

To me he will always be the mug who broke all links with club and country to go off and chase El Dorado. Everyone knows El Dorado doesn't exist.

It's almost as bad as Rush and how he felt like playing for Juve. It IS a different country you daft twit!

Oh, but it does - it does, somewhere deep in the Amazon rainforest.

Shhh! :nono: I'm putting an expedition together, do the current day Franklin's have any dosh? I could use them as investors.

At any rate, chasin' gold tinted dreams doesn't diminish his talent as a footballer. The latter is not to be questioned here. Ol' Cornelius was special. Perhaps he was too eccentric for his own good - perhaps he was simply a bit too greedy: It happens. My other wasted talent, Alec Jackson, could be accused of the same.

Greed, dreams, talents gone to waste - 'tis a story told many times, but always a good 'un.

Yep, it appears I missed the point spectacularly . I'm already getting defensive about our team!

Given this is a draft on a United forum - and given the players who actually were picked - there are some notable omissions (as it were):

Eddie Colman (should have picked him myself, actually, but I went with Shackleton instead - it would be a travesty if the Clown Prince wasn't picked).

Martin Buchan

Bill Foulkes

David Pegg

Steve Coppell

Gordon Hill

Sammy McIlroy

Jack Rowley

Tommy Taylor

Dennis Viollet

...and probably more.

Other than that, the one great omission I can think of right now would be:

Jackie Milburn. Easily a better pick than many - depending on what sort of thing you were going for, of course, but still.

Others, off the top o' me boozy head:

Trevor Francis
Paul Mariner
Ray Wilkins
Steve Nicol
Roger Hunt
Ronnie Whelan
Dean Saunders
Steve Staunton
Steve Heighway
Sammy Lee
Frank Stapleton
Gary Bailey
David Rocastle
Matt Le Tissier
Colin Hendrie
John Wark (fer fecks sake - he was brilliant on his day, outscored bloody Rush in his first season with the scousers)
John Aldridge

...oh, many others, no doubt.

Not saying people should have, positively, gone for 'em - just mentioning a few worthy enough names.

Given who ended up being picked, I'd say there were a few glaring omissions.
