@Gio

Whoohoo! That's The Flash right there. I recall him more as a pure trickster - a sort of taking-the-piss dribbler - than anything. Which goes to show how faulty memories can be - because that insane gear shifting abliity certainly was a huge part of his game.

No, it's not faulty memories, that's the football he preferred to play, he only resorted to pace to the extent that was needed to get in contention/make a run for whatever through ball had been played for him, and that's what I always found remarkable and somewhat baffling tbh.

My football manager save says Meredith could play in attacking midfield. Interesting.

@Raees

Not sure why you are researching him, but he gets special brownie points for the reason he didn't join Barcelona. In 1984 they toook him on tour to the US, as a trial of sorts, along with Maradona (possibly planning on him as a replacement). He already had a bad reputation for his indiscipline, but he displayed it fully when the fire alarm went off at their hotel, everyone left promptly bar Mágico, who carried on banging some bint in his room.

My football manager save says Meredith could play in attacking midfield. Interesting.

A man who played with a toothpick in his mouth could probably do a job - in style - anywhere.

I have no idea what they base that on - but I personally would play him as a right winger. He was an outside right in his pomp - in other words, a winger.

I wouldn't play him centrally, put it like that. His main strengths would be his speed (burst), on-the-ball technique and his dribbling - and his crossing. Plus, he could certainly drift inside to grab a goal - he scored a decent amount of goals for a provider, but not for United: In all fairness he was probably in his true pomp for City, where he emerged as arguably the first proper "superstar" of football - and where he was more complete, I suppose, as both a trickster/crosser and a goal scorer.

But then again - the toothpick. That's hard to beat - regardless of position.

Hmmm, problem I have is if I have an attacking triumvirate of Waddle, Duff and Meredith. I stick to a 4-2-3-1 formation primarily and one of them needs to be a 10.

Easy, bench Waddle. There you go, that's what the 12th player spot is for.

Aye - I see the problem. Meredith could certainly play as a, say, tucked-in winger (no reason to regard him as a pure, line-hugging cross machine) - but I wouldn't play him as a No 10.

You've got three wingers there, basically - and that is a problem. Bench one of 'em * and dig up someone else - you need a sub anyway.

* And that would be Duff, surely.

Interesting. I was gonna spend my remaining money on a striker, but now I'm not sure. Anto, why'd you rate Duff over Waddle ?

I don't. I thought him being Irish was a bonus and also a natural left winger. Could be wrong on the latter re: Waddle, I saw him play on the left for Marseille all of two times but I was told those were probably the only two times he did

I'd agree, but I distinctly remember you telling me Waddle was a right winger and very rarely played on the left while I had it more as 50-50 based on a very small sample of games.

Aye - I remember that. And - yes - he did play mainly on the right in his pomp, even though he was a left footer. But he started as a left winger - and would easily be an asset there.

I just think he's the better player of the two - him and Duff - and you have to play Meredith on the right. So - there it is.

I know he was a classic poacher but could Fowler drop into the 10? Where did he play when Owen broke into the team?

@Chesterlestreet , you and @Pat_Mustard should definitely hook up with the magic man if you ever go to El Salvador.

I find the night stunning. I recommend it to everyone, although I suppose you also have to do stuff during the day

Urgh, you really don't want to have more than one player out of their natural/peak position, if that.

Hmm, looks like I'll either have to change form or buy an attacking midfielder.

I don't recall them playing much together - and certainly not well together. Ask the resident scousers - but I think they'll agree to that. Neither was much of a so-called link-up striker - very much finishers both of 'em.

In other words, Fowler in the hole is not something I'd recommend.

Feck it. I'll play a WM formation!

He was in the PFA team of the year when he played there. Hit with injuries and then replaced with Rio. His best season came in the right back position.

No doubt. I always waited for Wes to come truly good in the middle, but he never really did. Then again, he never got a proper chance to establish himself there, due to injuries and Fergie's needs.

He had some brilliant games as a CB - but it was flashes. His absolute best for United came as a defensively solid yet somehow offensively competent right back.

Right, so Gareth Barry is mine. Good protective cover for Adams and Terry and a left footed midfielder compliment to Keane.

Re: Waddle.

Before I forget it.

I think the key difference here is between what was Waddle's absolute best role, the one he preferred himself – and what he could do when employed on the “wrong” side (which actually was his “right” side, namely the left side!)

Waddle had a particular style and he liked cutting in from the right even though he was a natural leftie. He has talked at length about this – and about how he, when at Newcastle, would eventually ask to be fielded on the right – because he felt it was...right.

But he was a) a left winger to begin with and b) no doubt a player who operated on the left on occasion, including those two occasions when anto observed him.

So, if you ask me to choose between Duff and Waddle for the left wing spot – I'll take Waddle, who was the better player. Duff was not a bad player himself – not saying that. But Waddle was – clearly – a notch above, I'd say.

I might also say - as a wee anecdote - that in my most vivid memory of Chris Waddle he played on the right, and he played to no avail, so to speak - for Wednesday at Old Trafford in that glorious and now historic comeback match against us, spring of '93, when ***** ***** saved the day in rare style.

I had occasion to observe Waddle - who was still pretty sharp, though past his absolute best - closely, as I was sat pretty much as low as you can get on that day: Crap seat, really, but ideal for studying a winger up close.

I'll take that as an excuse to have a wee drink. Where's Mustard by the way? He's been acting like a priest lately, getting up in the morning like some sort of...worker. I dunno - I fear he's losing it.

One thing I'm really looking forward to in this draft is to see to what extent people will stick with an era, as it were - or roughly an era. Or whether they will mix and match players from all eras - from the dawn of the game as we know it to what Sky, at least (and BT Sport and feck knows who else) likes to sell as the greatest thing since crack.

On a serious note, beyond our little game, into what some people call the real world* - it's impossible not to notice the difference between the sheer PL category and...everything else. It's not as simple as that, obviously - since "everything else" has the advantage of spanning a century or so, but I believe you all know what I mean.

British or Irish players in the last decade - or the last two decades - quite clearly do not seem to be what they once were. And that bloody well ain't romanticism on my part - it simply ain't.

Anyway - I've enjoyed this one so far and I expect to enjoy it even more as we go along.

Off to bed now, cnuts - see you in the morning.
