All time British+Irish Fantasy Draft

I didn't mean to grass the poor bugger up. But obviously if all those bids went through he'd have had to pull out or the round would've been a write-off.

Lynk has fined 5m for breaching the 300m rule. Owen and Cole bid has been deemed invalid. @Skizzo - do you want your 13m bid for Owen to stand? @SirAF do you want your 39m bid for A.Cole to stand?

Please use this guys, update your own lists with bought players.

Aye, unlucky there for Lynk. Hopefully he can recover - still loads of good players around who won't go for huge sums once people start to penny pinch (and I reckon most of us will have to do that very shortly).

Pain in the arse to keep the books, actually. I've miscalculated to an extent myself - will have under a hundred left if Dean goes through - and for some reason that took me by surprise.

I think...maybe...this:

...is the game I'm thinking about. Not sure, though - there were many of them. The one I remember was 100% text based - no game graphics at all.
Looks quite similar to this game I mind playing on a mate's Amstrad:

Good effort Kevin.

No one bothered try the one I sent a link to earlier?

I did, actually - but it kept freezing.

There are several sites where you can download these feckers, though - and run 'em as DOS games. Works brilliantly - and of course, they don't take up any space whatsoever.

Welcome on board Tom:

To be honest the only reason he's been bought is so I can quote Shankly for the rest of the tournament:

Tom Finney would have been great in any team, in any match and in any age, even if he had been wearing an overcoat.

When asked about how a top star of the day compared to Finney:
Aye, he's as good as Tommy – but then Tommy's nearly 60 now.

Tom Finney would have been great in any team, in any match and in any age - even if he had been wearing an overcoat. He had the opposition so frightened that they'd have a man marking him when warming up!"

Shankly's predilection for exaggeration should not distract from the fact that Finney was a true great

You left out the important part from the article ;) (provided you took it from it of course)

Also contains a snippet about Duncan Edwards. Btw just curious, why did Edwards get a golden watch from Real Madrid?

Tapping up? ;)

I'm curious too.

Strange, I thought I would need D-Fend or something but it just worked outright.

Last game i played brough some Mexico deja vu :(

He got it after the semi final in Madrid...I'm assuming as a sign of respect for the player he was, or how well he played.

I'm not sure exactly why he was given the watch but Real's president, the famous Santiago Bernabeu (after whom the stadium is named), was a great admirer of Edwards.

When Bernabeu learned that Edwards had died, he started crying and said:

“The boy was a colossus. Manchester must be raining tears tonight.”

When asked about how a top star of the day compared to Finney:

Can you imagine that England actually had Matthews and Finney in the same team? Two best dribblers that England ever had both in the same team - on each wing. I wanted/want Finney in that withdrawn centre forward role he played and nearly carried to the title. Not sure which season it was, anybody does?

It was for his (and Byrne's) heroic attempt of carrying Torres out of the pitch, I would imagine  On a serious note, it's no secret that Bernabeu was a big fan of his (and most of our golden generation then).

Billy wright and roger bryne were part of a back line which conceded 7 v Hungary. Matthews and finney were part of the Hungary drubbings too.. thats all I remember of their international achievements.

That was frightening, I think

The first time they played this way was in May 1947 in Lisbon against Portugal, who were routed 10-0. Matthews was irresistible, but Finney was in such devastating form that his direct opponent, the Portuguese captain and right-back Álvaro Cardoso, walked off the field in the first half, demanding to be substituted, and would never play for his country again. A year later, the pair outclassed Italy in Turin, Finney cutting in to score the last two English goals in a 4-0 humiliation of the holders of the World Cup, last competed for in 1938.

It was 1956/57 when he played as a deep-lying center-forward, under Cliff Britton. Won an English footballer of the year the second time. In 1956/57 they were third, in 1957/58 they were runner-ups.

Nothing, can't go down to 11 here really. I am not sure how we will do it anyhow with 12? Like Champions League group stage? 3 in each group - 4 groups - 2 from each group, top 8 goes through for the quarters - semi - then final? To keep as many rounds as a regular draft, otherwise we will have less reinforcements.

Come to think about it, I'd bloody love a group stage!

We had a group stage in the 50s draft and it was pretty tedious. That was mainly because it was 2 groups of 5 with the top 4 going through IIRC.

Seems brilliant, how come it was so poor? It would have as many matches as a regular draft. Also the only reasonable way to solve the fact that we are a couple short.

I imagine you've got three options:
  1. Play a first or preliminary round involving 6/8 teams (depending on Lynk) to get to an even number of 8.
  2. Play a first round involving all teams with the best losers going into 2 play-offs for the final 2 spots.
  3. Group stages - 3 groups of 4 teams (25 games for the whole tournament) or 4 groups of 3 teams (19 games for the whole tournament).

We basically lacked the bollocks to set up a more cut-throat group stage. So many of the games were dead rubbers.

Not going to get into any match thread style bickering here, but if you're going to use that as an argument against those players, it's going to be fairly easy to counter it.

On top of facing one of the greatest teams ever in their pomp, England were tactically outplayed and suffered from immense hubris. They didn't lose because of the individual quality of the players you highlight.

Barca were utterly humiliated over two legs by Bayern a couple of years ago. Should imply there's every reason to put question marks over Xavi, Iniesta, Biscuits – even Messi himself. It obviously doesn't work that way, though – as I'm sure you know.
