Why does it make sense to sell a player that the manager wants to keep? Won't the club be better off financially by keeping him for the 4 years of his contract and then letting him go on a free if he hasn't signed an extension? Think of the value added with on-field success and commercial activities if he stays. Owen ran down his contract like that and then moved to Real Madrid. I think McManaman did too.
