Ruud became a spare part. Ronaldo is the most important part of our attack. Without him, our tactics dont quite work. We're toothless.

If we sold Ronaldo we couldnt replace him directly. We'd be able to replace his general play and assists if we signed a top quality winger like Ribery - though hes injured now so thats a no go. But someone of that quality.

But we'd have to replace other parts of the team to make up for the goals we'd miss without Ronaldo. And to do that we may have to change the way we play.

Exactly.

Which is what everybody said after Ruud's departure. All this means is that we'll have to play as more of a team and others will have to step up and get some goals.

Ronaldo: YOUR view

Right, so now that the Euros are over for Ronaldo, and after all the crap and media bollox, his interviews and non-interviews and all...do you:

a) Have the same love for 'our boy' Cristiano Ronaldo

b) Think we should sell him this summer

Just want to get a general consensus.

It's because they were ignorant. You could see how our game changed in 2006 with Saha in the team. Ruud wasn't part of this new team. Ronaldo is very important part of our team right now. He scored 42 goals ffs and he's the best player in the world, it's ridiculous to compare him with Ruud in 2006.

well that's just Ronaldo talk, media stories and developments.
what about a definitive thread of opinions from the fans?

I haven't been following all this media bollocks. If he comes back and decides he wants to stay, that's fine. If he wants to go, fair enough. Have fun being a fecking marketing tool in Spain. But the least he could do is come clean about it.

Funny thing... if he stays and spends another couple of season winning us trophiesm, we're going to have a load of people "apologising" for having turned against him... for the second time!

I hope so!

Well, we did start playing differently without Ruud. And it was great for us, because it led to our current attacking tactics - something which all other clubs on the planet would love to be able to play. We'd be regressing from that if we changed it now, in my opinion. Its been integral to our success. We never won a double with Ruud.

No, which shouldn't take anything away from them because they play a different style and take different positions on the pitch. Ronaldo, even when playing on the wing, has sometimes regularly taken positions in the box that you'd expect a striker to take. A lot of his goals were poacher goals. Messi and Ronaldinho don't do that because they're not supposed so. For our formation it suited quite well, though.
Wrong.

Ronaldinhio played loads of times in the center with Etoo shifting to wide left. If anything he had an even more free role than Ronaldo. Ronaldo still at times goes back to help in defense. Ronaldinhio played as a pure forward player, never seen him once trying help a full back.

And Messi too has played quite a few times as a second striker and the pure forward role also applies to him.

That performance was/is ridiculously overrated. That Real defense was no better than Newcastle's in past few season.

Ronaldinhio only also ever had two great seasons. Ronaldo has already matched those two for me and will produce more be it at United or Real.

Overall, Ronaldinhio still edges him out but it won't last.

I'd say one great season. Perhaps the most overrated player of the last two decades. And I've seen some truly great players.

We changed our game when Ruud left, will have to do the same again.

And it was not about Ruud anyway. We were struggling to replace Becks-Keane-Scholes-Giggs axis with Beckham gone, Keane over the hill, Scholes and Giggs out of form. We were trying to find a new style since then and finally succeeded. Will have to start over again, Ronaldo is a focal point of our attack.

I agree to an extent. Still reckon at his best he was World's best at that time but was overrated by loads. Does not come close to Zidane for a start.

POINT 1:If Ronaldo goes he goes, if he stays then I'll cheer for him as long as he does the business on the pitch. No need to act so childish over all of this. This is the real world and players are all mercenary. The same Arsenal fans that were calling Hleb the new George Best are all happy to get rid of him now. Players are as fickle as the fans are.

POINT 2: Everybody always assume that Fergie is like us, and is scouring the web for any United/Ronaldo related news. The media is always putting up stories about Fergie being "fuming" about the Ronaldo issue, or some other incident like Ramsey.

The truth is, I think Fergie is a hell of a lot calmer about these kind of situations. While the papers were saying Fergie was "furious" about not being able to contact Ronaldo, he was pictured relaxing by the pool in France. Apparently Ronaldo now says Fergie never even tried to contact him. Fergies much too experienced to be getting stressed by something like this.

In Fergie's mind the Glazers have assured him they will not sell Ronaldo and that is that. If the situation changes then he will have to deal with it. But I am pretty sure he is planning for next season with Ronaldo in the squad and not getting angry and drawing up Plan B.

Clearly losing him would be a huge loss in the goals department. But what happened after Ruud left? The entire team chipped in with goals. We had a point to prove then and if he's off then we'll have a point to prove now. One thing about United is once you've counted us out of it, we'll come back better than you ever thought we could be.

If we use the money from the Ronaldo transfer to buy lets say Huntelaar, Berbatov and a classy winger we won't miss Ronaldo IMO.

where would we play huntelaar, berbatov and classy winger? There are only 11 players allowed on the field at a time. Would you bench tevez and rooney for berbatov and huntelaar? What would you do?

Ronaldo has been judged more on his behaviour these past weeks and the supposed justification for it rather than a simple desire to leave the club.

Why should i or other apologise for that?

Pretty sure we wouldn't be toothless if Ronaldo left :)

we won't be toothless but we won't be as effective with him in our lineup. Our team is designed around him in the sense that he can interchange and go anywhere else (whether it be from right to left or vice-versa or push in to the middle) on the pitch freely. I'm pretty sure that at real madrid he won't have that freedom (the same way he doesn't have as much freedome when he plays for portugal). Our tactics suit him very well and his play for suits us very well (extremely well I should say).

We were toothless most of the time when he didn't play. And nobody can replace him. Worse still, nobody available could come close to replacing everything he has given us this season.

So what do we do? Sign a 30 goal a season striker? Who does he replace in the starting line up? Can his movement set up as many chances for other players as the 3 up front did for us this season?

Tevez scored 19 and Ronaldo scored 42 last season. Rooney was the only other major contributer with 18.

For me, if we did somehow end up selling Ronaldo. We'd need :

- 1 of the top 5 wingers in the world

- 1x 25 goal a season striker, replacing most of Ronaldo's goals and allowing for Rooney to play his natural position.

Then we'd need Rooney to get back to scoring around 20 goals in the league.

We'd need Nani to improve on his 3 goals to 10+, which will be aided by him getting more matches next season.

And a few more goals from other players who contributed very little to the goal tally this season.

We'd need Tevez to score 15 from the bench.

So effectively, we'd need 2 players to replace him as well as our current players contributing more goals than they have this season in a side that would probably be less creative and more predictable.

Can anybody ever recall Ronaldo kissing the United shirt after scoring?

I know its a random question i just can't recall him ever doing it.

I say we sell him for £100 million, and play the £100 million on the right. The opposing players will be distracted by the wealth gaze.

feckin hell the kind of shite that is spat out in this place

so you thinks its that easy? why dont we just blow 30m on ronaldinho get him on a treadmill plus the other 35m on "lets say" etoo and then we win the champions league again.

IF Ronaldo goes to Madrid, I so hope we draw them in the CL and Rooney makes a complete fecking monkey out of him. I hope we dump them out of the competition and Ronaldo is made a look a complete chump.

Not that I feel (premature) bitterness about this or anything.

After all that has happened i believe that if he stays, it could well be damaging to squad morale and unity if we were to offer him an increase to his salary, the club must stand firm on this [as has been reported].

Ronaldo may have thought this a potentially win-win situation for himself, a move to Madrid or he says here on more money. If it turns out that no mindblowing Real Madrid bid comes in, and that Sir Alex can manage any side effects, the fool should not be compensated for his stupidity IMO.
