Alexis Sanchez | Udinese: No Deal Yet

I know nothing of this lad, how would he fit in exactly ?

As far as I see it, he's made for United.

He's got a low centre of gravity (he's 5ft 6), quick, two good feet, got a trick in him, scores goals, can deliver from wide, play anywhere across the pitch.

Would be a different option to the likes of Valencia.

Dare I say it...more of a Cristiano Ronaldo type player (DISCLAIMER: I am not saying he's as good as Ronaldo, will be as good as Ronaldo etc etc etc. Merely that I consider him to be a similar type of player having seen him play).

I feel like I do before a 1st date, a sense of giddy excitement tinged with that air of expectant disappointment.

I'll just get pissed and that usually works

Well earlier we learned that Rooney is an underpant gnome, so anything's possible.

I like your plan, keep us posted on how it works out.

I reckon if this happens then Nani and Berbatov are done.

Very possible. Its a massive IF and I still reckon Sanchez will end up at City.

But if we do sign Sanchez AND Young I'm beginning to think SAF wants to overhaul our way of playing. Especially in big matches.

Perhaps he sees us going back to 2008 where we played with no set center forward but a roaming front 3.

Will be very interesting if we do sign this lad.

I think so, and hope so. If you get the 3 front players in form it can be unplayable.

This looks set for a bidding war. I wouldnt fancy us if it got to that.

Cannot see us signing him with Barca and city being involved

Gracias. Where does it in your opinion leave our interest in Young and indeed younger players like Morrison and Cleverly trying to come through ? Or even a player like Park ?

That is an intriguing theory. It is certainly possible.

I don't believe a word of it. It just doesn't make sense. Why would we need a £35 million winger/second striker when we have Nani, Valencia, Giggs, Park and possibly Young for the wings. And Rooney, Berbatov, Owen and Welbeck that can play the role behind a main striker?
Giggs only has so much left in the tank. And Sanchez is better than all of the other players that you listed with the exception of Rooney. I think he's the type of player that you don't pass on if you can get him. One of those that you say, "we'll find a way to get him on the pitch".

It should be a no brainer for the lad when it comes to United vs. City. Apart from everything else, Chile's national team is nicknamed La Roja (meaning The Red) and their biggest rival (Argentina) wear sky blue.

We tried that once.

Gracias. Where does it in your opinion leave our interest in Young and indeed younger players like Morrison and Cleverly trying to come through ? Or even a player like Park ?

Well, Park I don't really consider as a winger - I said earlier in the thread that while may line up out wide, he does most of his work infield. So I would take him out of the equasion.

As for the younger players, I think its worth considering a few things: we're 2 midfielders down with Scholes retiring and Gibson (probably) leaving. Also, it would be only natural for Giggs to play a few less games less season.

Also last season, we played 60 or so games. That's a hell of a lot. I think there will be room for everyone. The likes of Cleverley and certainly Morrison given his off pitch concerns will be patient.

I honestly think that Young and (crosses fingers) Sanchez would signal a significant change in our play back to the way it was 3 years ago. Quicker, more fluidity, players interchanging positions more. Both Sanchez and Young (and Nani and Park for that matter) can play right across the pitch and be comfortable.

My concern would be for Berbatov. While he was great last season, it was telling that Hernandez got the nod more as the season came to a close. His movement was fantastic and allowed us to play with the kind of pace that having Berbatov up front often denies us.

Sir Alex wants to win the Champions League next year, and Alexis Sanchez is one of a small pool of players that can take us to an other level. I really hope we get him, he's easily worth £30m +.

Jones, Young, Nasri + Sanchez

Who is Alexis Sanchez?
high demand?

ALEXIS SANCHEZ is a 22-year-old Chilean international winger who plays for Udinese.

He first caught the eye at last summer's World Cup with his trickery and pace as Chile reached the last 16.

Since then, he enjoyed his best-ever club campaign, scoring 12 goals in 31 games as his team clinched a Champions League place.

Manchester United and neighbours City face stiff competition if they are to sign him, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan all strongly interested. United are hot favourites.

Sanchez can play out wide or in the middle and has some impressive fans.

Former Italy chief Arrigo Sacchi called him a 'phenomenon' and added: "He would not only do a great job with Pep Guardiola at Barcelona but he would add value to any team."

What are his strengths?

THEY have been raving about his skills and dribbling ability all season in Italy - and Alex Ferguson has taken note.

Sanchez started life as a right winger but has been used anywhere along the front line for club and country.

He is not an out-and-out forward who could replace Carlos Tevez at City but he can play down the middle off the main striker - as a foil to United's Wayne Rooney, perhaps.

Sanchez is seen in the Cristiano Ronaldo mould.

He loves stepovers and knows where the goal is, scoring four past Palermo last season.

Is he really the new Ronaldo?

THERE have been comparisons with the world-record £80million man and, if you check him out on YouTube, it is easy to see why.

His style and flair are much like that of Real Madrid's star man.

In Italy, they liken him to Lionel Messi with his lightning feet - but Sanchez is eager to play it down.

He said: "I'd like to just be remembered as myself, without any comparisons.

"I'm still some way off achieving what Messi and Ronaldo have done."

If he could come close to matching Portuguese ace Ronaldo's explosive spell in England, he will not have done too badly.

He wears the No 7 shirt as well.

Is he tough enough for the Prem?

MANCHESTER'S clubs know better than anyone how hit and miss South Americans can be when they come over to play in England.

Uruguayan Diego Forlan was a flop for United, while Carlos Tevez has shone for both the Red Devils and City.

But £32.5million Robinho - a one-time British record signing - was an Eastlands disaster.

Sanchez would prefer to stay in Italy or move to Barcelona but United look like they can change his mind.

At just 5ft 6in, he could expect a bit of rough treatment but, with his jet heels and tricky feet, defenders would have to catch him first. He is also strong with a low centre of gravity - all in all, a bit of a nightmare for full-backs.

Who is he likely to sign for?

UNITED seem to have got the edge over their rivals, despite Udinese owner Gino Pozzo insisting this week that City were the favourites to sign Sanchez.

Clearly, City's wealth pointed to them being most likely to get closest to the £35million asking price.

However, United's European pedigree seems to be a greater pull for the player.

Other genuine European superpowers are in the running and Sanchez has hinted he would prefer to stay in sunny climes.

But David Gill and Fergie are very persuasive.
From the sun

Didn't see him at the World Cup then?

International football don't really interest me much, to be fair. Unless of course it's like the under 21 game last Sunday, where I was only interested in watching how the United kids played.

I reckon if this happens then Nani and Berbatov are done.

At least one of them if Young's coming in, couldn't work any other way.

Could be that we're not as close to signing Young as rumours would suggest and that we see Sanchez as more of a priority with Young as a very reasonable back-up, wouldn't be the first time we were seriously looking at more than one player for one place, and if we didn't sign Young I could easily see those two still staying. Leaves Valencia and Berbatov playing more of a squad role with them coming in if Nani, Hernandez or Sanchez have a drop in form (as you'd reasonably expect).

Sun also saying we're confident of a deal being done and Gill is hoping to "wrap up a £27million transfer for football's most wanted man within the next few days."

I still have my doubts but it is encouraging a lot of the papers seem to think Barca are concentrating on Rossi/Cesc and that Sanchez would prefer Utd over City. If that is true then I think we might get the player, the fact Gill was there gives the impression we really are going for this transfer.

This looks set for a bidding war. I wouldnt fancy us if it got to that.

While I see your point, Barca only have 40 million net to spend, and fancy Cesc and Rossi quite a bit. They've also already got a 5'6" speedy dribble master from the southern half of South America.

As for City, it may very much be true that they are re-examining their transfer policy in light of the forthcoming financial fair play rules.

Maybe hopeful thinking, but the bidding war looks like it could be a creation by Udinese to drive the price up. We'll hear 35-40 million bandied about, then see reports of bids tabled in the 25-30 million range. Can't help but wonder if the former tend to originate from Italy.

Was Gill definitely there then, or are the papers just all assuming that based on the Gazzetta story? They've all seemed to run with it...

Interesting if it is true, although can't for the life of me work out where he'd play (whilst also fitting in Hernandez, Rooney, Valencia and Nani, anyway).

I can't see many clubs in Italy having that kind of money. Maybe if a player was going to Udinese in return and his value included in the deal I suppose, but not just a cold hard cash payment.

Noone seems to pickingup on the fact that Sanchez is a United fan. I read this years ago!! Also - lazy journalism to say that he first came to light at last years world cup. We've been monitoring him for years - and even made an offer 3-4 years ago before he joined Udinese.

It's a great system. Makes centre backs dizzy.

Its a fantastic system as Barca have shown to devastating effect and we showed in 2008. But you certainly need the players to do it and the signing of two winger-forwards would certainly point to it.

I must say when the thought occured to me my inner muppet really got excited.

It could also just be that Sanchez is our first choice and if we don't get him we have Ashley Young as a backup.

Or more than likely Udinese are using United's name to bump up the price that City pay.

A few people have said this, but I don't buy it.

Don't you think we could do this even without the signing of Young? Nani's even more suited to the role in my view.

I disagree, I think Young is far more suited to it.

Nani was great last season but I think when Valencia came back and Nani was moved to the left, his form dipped a fair bit.

For that system to work, you need players who can operate on each flank and through the middle. Young is better on that score than Nani for me.

We can always sell one of the Nani triplets to fund the Sanchez transfer.

United set to sign £27million Sanchez from under City's noses

Manchester United are ready to seal a £27million deal for Udinese’s Chilean star Alexis Sanchez - under the noses of Manchester City and Barcelona.

United supremo David Gill flew to Barcelona yesterday to meet Udinese’s negotiators who were talking to the Catalans as the auction for the talented attacking midfielder comes to the boil.

Top 10 things you need to know about United, City and Barca target Alexis Sanchez

And Gill was also spotted in talks with Sanchez’s representatives who have been with Barca - with insiders revealing that the player wants to go to United above all of their rivals.

Sanchez is being bartered around by Udinese, who wanted £30 million but are now under pressure to take less both by United and their South American star’s camp.

United have now gone in hard and official for Sanchez - despite City sending a two-man delegation of Garry Cook and Brian Marwood to Italy over the past few days.

City were hoping to blow all of the other bidders out of the water with an offer, but they have been told again that Sanchez prefers to go to the red half of Manchester.

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants Sanchez as his next major capture, a race that sped up when Paul Scholes announced his retirement. United had been watching the exciting Udinese ace but really got serious as that vacancy appeared.

Sanchez is waiting on United and Udinese sorting out the fee. He is in Chile but has been given permission by his national team to fly off and sign for a new club before Copa America begins in July.

The gifted and speedy star wants to go to United as he believes he has a better chance of a game than he would at Barcelona who have been on his trail for weeks.

Barca failed to match Udinese’s asking price - despite offering cash and various player swaps - and they will now switch their search elsewhere with Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas still high on their wish list.
