What is Jonny doing to that bent over naked man? Who brought all the product in the corner?

Fergie-speak. So we can conclude that: Buttner starts from now on; Powell returns to the reserves.

Well, it is classic Fergie. Classic man management. Bring the cocky young lad down to earth, build the quiet young lad up.

The lad has a lot character to be a player at United.

Definately appears to be the case. Didn't seem fazed by the occasion at all. Usually a player on his first game at OT will be overly cautious and play it very simple. Buttner was marauding up and down the wing right from kick off. That sliding tackle he made in the box in the first half also showed a lot of confidence, theres not many would have risked giving away a penalty in the first 20 minutes of their debut.

Let's not go overboard here. Fergie has a point about rashness. Also, it was Wigan. I thought Buttman was impressive today, but he's not about to take Evra's spot based on one good performance. Against Wigan. He seems to have good drive and determination, those will be his greatest assets if he develops into a regular for us.

Definitely something likeable about the guy though, despite his looking like an escaped convict.

Not bad for a debut... Not bad for a 4 million deal.

Looks like it's SAF on his transfer sense, again.

It was one game against a feeble Wigan side.

What I liked though is his composure on the ball. Never once panicked into doing anything and was happy to take on the creative responsibility himself rathr than wait 10 minutes for Giggs to wonder slowly over and help him. There's no way he started out as a fullback.

Was pissing me off in the first half though when he kept turning one way and the other looking for someone to make themselves available for a pass, and our entire team just stood and stared at him like a bunch of clueless fecking Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime. It happened about four times.

I have to agree. He has a bit of the headless chicken about him, there was one passage of play in the second half where he got the ball and literally started run around like a headless chicken. He went up the flank a bit, then round in a circle and then ran the ball out of play. He has potential to be a real cult hero, but I wouldn't fancy him in a big game just yet.

You made it sound like he was high on some kind of substance and needlessly ran around in a circle without anyone chasing him. He made a bad decision but he ran it out of play because he was heavily pressed but a second before that he showed tremendous power and skill and then cut in.

Yes he was a bit rash at times and once or twice a player went past him but these are every game occurances for Evra these days. Buttner doesnt have to be perfect to put in a better performance than Evra has been putting in for a long time.

His time will come, no doubt, but currently he's there to offload pressure off of Evra but also give him a run for his money. It's a win-win situation for all involved, as long as the lad can keep his head cool and continue to work hard.

I don't see why the rashness should be such a big issue. If its a part of his game then along with Rafael we have 2 attacking fullbacks who never shy away from a tackle. I absolutely love that. He'll be fantastic for us hopefully. Really electric debut. Chuffed to bits.

i appreciate this too.

He had a good game. Looks very good going forward and defended ok, though wasn't really put under to much pressure to be honest. What did worry me at times was in our own half he tried to play himself out of trouble, which generally meant we lost the ball in a dangerous area. He needs to learn a little better here on when to just clear the ball, but other than that promising signs from him.

Loved his interview on MOTD last night, "I come on the field and I look around and it was beautiful..."

Very early to talk about his future but I just like the fact that for the first time in 6 years Evra will actually have to earn his spot instead of getting it by default.

He plays wide left as well..
Might see Evra and Buttner play together sometime too.

Yes but after that great run were 'the rough edges' he didn't release the ball soon enough and tied himself in knots. SAF is cautious about him and the press were much more tepid about his performance than the United fans.

Buttner has cult hero written all over him because fans love committed players who run around a lot: Tevez, Heinze and Alan Smith all spring to mind. I just don't fancy the guy for a big game yet. I am not saying that he won't become a first team regular, just that he looks like he needs a decent amount of work before he is good enough.

Good debut, no fear and drove the ball very well down the left flank. Waiting to see how he does defensively when hes tested.

The thing is he was very comfortable on the ball aswell. Ridiculously so for a fullback. He must have started out as or been a winger/midfielder at some point.

I think the rough edges was more the fannying around with the ball by his own cornerflag, and exposing himself to situations where there was too much space inside him quite a lot. When Giggs came over to cover he was often just taking himself out of the game by positioning himself as if Giggs still wasn't there, if that makes sense.

Agree that I wouldn't trust him there in a tougher game yet. Especially not in a situation like yesterday where he was often the only United player on that side of the pitch. In games like yesterday though he could be very useful.

That would make sense. It didn't look like he'd been fully converted yet. In fact, he just looked like a winger without a fullback behind him. A good thing to have in some games...probably a bad thing to have in others.

Giggsy was doing a great job of drawing people away from him too. Sort of a masterclass in how to play inside from the wing and make it positionally effective rather than counter productive.

Much like our paddy who started out as a striker, then moved to the wing and then when he joined monaco he was shifted specifically to left back. It's early days but I thought he did well. Here's hoping he can keep on improving.

I wouldn't be dissapointed to see him against Liverpool; it will avoid Evra recieving shit abuse and won't have to worry about the handshake with Suarez then.

Who plays on the right for Liverpool again? Borini?

I wouldn't trust him against Liverpool just yet. If it was up to me I'd play him against Galatasaray and give Evra a nice rest before Liverpool. Experience matters a lot in these games and we should ease Buttner in to the squad gradually.
