This match was screaming out for Shaw's ball-playing ability. Telles is a good back-up and deserved a run with Shaw's terrible form this season, but if Shaw can get back into semi-decent form then he's obviously a couple of levels above him. It's just up to Shaw to show he deserves the spot (something I hope he does soon).
Although sometimes he has his moments, I think, he just lacks physicality. He has no speed, stamina and strenght to be a premier league starting left back. His overlaps are lazy, he constantly gets in trouble when he tries to get back to his defensive positions, and his defending itself isn't confident at all. I miss Shaw.
Just a matter of time before Shaw takes back his spot, Telles has a great crossing but that's about it. Shaw is superior in pretty much everything else.
Agreed, Telles works hard and tries his best, but it seems he doesn't have good understanding with Bruno & Rashford, hopefully Shaw plays today and he gets back into form.
I think people are forgetting how poor Shaw has been the last few months, accident waiting to happen. I hope he like many of our players finds some form asap. Telles isn't ideal but isn't making the mistakes Shaw has been doing this season.
Nobody behind in the build up to Coutinho's goal, yet he stops running and lets Coutinho go. Bizarre. Had he kept up with him he could've stopped the equaliser. Just not switched on.
Put in a few decent balls into the box but overall he's quite a limited player. Not the best defensively either. Seems he can go awry quite easily when it comes to team shape too.

Telles only kept his spot because he was lucky enough to start in Carrick's last game and he did well enough to warrant a run under the new manager.
However, Shaw has put in better performances than Telles lately. Shaw has created more chances and has had 2 assists in the few games he's played during Telles's run. Shaw is the much better player of the two defensively as well.
And when did that happen? Shaw’s only been on the bench twice. Right after his back to back concussions where Rangnick said he wasn’t fit to play and the match after. So Telles has really only been chosen over Shaw once all season. One match isn’t keeping him out of the side for the season.
For £15m I expect someone to be able to run faster than a walking pace, have the slightest idea of how to defend and do more attacking than just whipping in random crosses, the majority of which go directly to the keeper. He’s shite.
Shaw is better but Shaw has been kinda atrocious early in the season (especially when ole was In charge)
Telles is a good back up but should not be a starter

Villa are a very physical and fast moving team. I had doubts Telles would handle the physical aspect before the game. He's better against teams that we dominate possession wise because he has little defending to do
Yeah, that’s exactly how I saw it too. We have a bunch of players like that actually. Great for one of half a game. Diabolical in the other half. It’s weird.

He was one of the best players on the pitch in the first half, go back and watch it again, he looked good down the left with Elanga. Some people on here are incapable of a balanced view of anything, 1/10 or 10/10.
People are saying a lot of complimentary things about our first 30 minutes. That was supposedly when United were in control of the match.
Well, it wasn't really United who were in control. It was Telles. 49 touches in the first 30 minutes. Significantly more than anybody else on the pitch. He was running the show from leftback.
The last 60 minutes were when United lost their grip of the game. That was also when Telles got used less.
You could make the argument that Telles should have forced his way into the match in the final hour. That's a fair criticism. And his defending wasn't always great. But for all things he could have improved on, he did far more that was good.
Anybody who praised the first half an hour should be praising Telles doubly as much.

I am one of his biggest critics but he linked up really well with Bruno and Elanga especially with those one twos which made us look threatening again on the left flank. His defending always leaves a lot to be desired though
I thought Telles was ok. He doesn't possess Luke Shaw's talent but he seems to give 100%. Wasn't a game for his crosses, as it was far too easy for Brentford's tall central defenders to head them clear.
