Alex Iwobi

I would much rather have Iwobi in our squad than Lingard. Although he does hugely benefit from Wenger's style of play.

yes this, and he is terrible finisher, we will see how he develops over years to match Lingard who is a better player right now

Lingard has been known for missing sitters though.

Lingard has scored 20 senior goals from 100 games. A 1 in 5 ratio.

Iwobi has scored 2 goals from 33 games.

I think Iwobi is a fantastic prospect, but his goal threat is an issue.

He's sort of more of the playmaker than the finisher in our system. He could do with adding a few more goals, his shooting technique is good enough and you can see his thinking with some of the shots he takes. I think goals will come in time.

He performed below par today, he might be being overplayed at the moment.

He reminds me of former Arsenal player Hleb. He too had a poor goal return but was a very smooth and technically gifted playmaker.

Very very similar players. Iwobi's actually in pretty poor form but I love him, absolutely huge talent.

He's got a fierce shot on him with a low backlift thanks to his great technique.

He does need to add goals to his game though but given he is young and this is his first full season as a XI player I'm not worried. He just needs some confidence is all. Wenger has said the same about Iwobi too.

Thankfully Ozil, Sanchez and Walcott have been in good scoring form so far so there is less pressure on Iwobi.

I really like him, he just sort of appeared out of nowhere.

Think he's a big part of the reason Ozil won't get the pay rise he's after.

Whats this guys 'natural' position? The Arsenal website says he's a natural winger who deputizes for Ozil. So is he a no. 10 being played out of position? I was having an argument with an Arsenal fan who rates him highly and thinks me comparing him to Martial and Rashford is like comparing apples to oranges. If he's indeed a playmaker he's still an offensive player and still expected to be a better finisher and he lacks in this respect

I've watched him a few times and he was nothing special. I don't rate him highly.

He's a playmaker at heart. His strengths are decision making, passing and movement, close control and dribbling. His pace is merely okay and his shooting has been average. You and I could probably say all the same things about Ozil that we've said Iwobi tbf. Although Iwobi is very strong, Ozil isn't.

I'm not trying to say he's an elite player, he isn't but that kind of sums him up

I'm glad he declared for Nigeria. You can only imagine how the media would ruin him and over hype him more than arsneal fans, if he ever got to knocking on the door at national team level for England.

Good player though, definitely talented enough to become an important player for Arsenal.

Really good talent who will turn into a ineffective softie by Arsenal in a few years.

Nice one. I remember Robbie from AFTV hyping him in a season preview-type video a couple of seasons back, speaking along the lines of 'forget Rashford, it's all about Alex Iwobi'. I understand the comparison was because they are both young talents but as you indicate it feels a bit apples and oranges.

I'd be surprised if anyone thought Iwobi has looked the better player up to now, but at least from a United perspective this is partly because we've been led to expect Iwobi to do similar things to Rashford; play directly, beat men for pace, score goals, which he hasn't done because he's a different kind of player.

Very different players but I do think Rashford is clearly better right now. If either are to be top players I'd imagine Rashford's link up and creative play needs to improve while Iwobi needs to work on his shooting boots.

TBH no one thought Iwobi would be the breakthrough talent in the youth team, there were 3-4 attacking talents people were picking ahead of him. What surprised everyone how mature he was when he broke through. Most young players have poor vision and pass to the opposition or lose the ball. Iwobi rarely loses the ball, nearly always completes his passes, nearly always picks the right pass, very good movement and has a very good first touch. He also has very good close control and at times has dribbles the reminds of us of his uncle Jay Jay Okocha. I'd like to see him go on more mazey dribbles and improve his shooting. But even if he doesn't improve he's a good team player to have because

What makes him 'better' than Welbeck?

I think Welbeck is underrated and overall better right now but I like to define what different players strengths are. But Iwobi has better close control as in really good, first touch and link up play, which in itself is a Welbeck strength. And he's imensely strong, you can't push him off the ball. Welbeck's workrate, tenacity, ball carrying and movement is more important for the team right now.

They actually played some great 1-2-3s when they've played together.

I do not get the fascination for Iwobi, certainly not worthy of being on the top of a Man Utd-forum! Would I want him in our squad? Absolutely not. Same goes for Lingard, but I guess you need an English guy on the bench who can bring som energy when needed.

I'm yet to see a game that he played well in. I don't watch a lot of Arsenal games, to be fair, but still.

Thanks for marking my card on Iwobi, I need to see more of him. It sounds like his most impressive traits are those you wouldn't expect in a young player, which unfortunately means he is less eye catching to fans like myself who will mostly see highlights of Arsenal games.

I think he recently opted to represent Nigeria, but I see what you mean in that he's a little out of leftfield for United fans.

My reason for taking an interest is precisely that I haven't known much about him until now, because as we've been discussing unlike Rashford he's not the kind of young player who'll light up MotD when he's playing well.

He scored in his first 2 Premier League games against Everton and Watford in 2016. He had a big dip in form last season though, but it is normal for such a young player.

Nobody wants Lingard in his squad too and he is on the top of a Man Utd Forum too sometimes, sry.
