Alas poor Carrick...WTF has happened?

Eh? He was sub-par again. He's probably our most important player. When he's mediocre like this the whole team suffers. But in many season he has been a slow starter. He gets going around Xmas. If he did get injured I don't want to think about it.

Don't think he was subpar at all, made a number of good recovery tackles/interceptions when others got caught out. Plus you have to factor in how average Fellaini was. With Southampton playing as high energy as they were Carrick can't be expected to control midfield on his own.

Yes. If you think that performance was Carrick at his best then you're insane. Or just don't watch United much. Maybe you're new to football in general perhaps.

Stop with the fabrications (and the insults are laughable), it would make this much easier. I said Carrick was very good, that's very different to what you're claiming I said. Maybe you should grow up.

He's not at his best, but he's been consistently decent for us this season.

He's been playing some illogical passes this season, but none have led to goals which is his saving grace.

Rooney being poor at times, RVP also poor and peripheral at times, Nani being substituted at stupid times and Januzaj being better than everyone despite not being very experienced is why we can't kill games off. Nothing to do with Carrick.

It's odd. When he was playing well for us in 2010-11, he was a consistent scapegoat on here.

Now he's finally won over the fans and when he plays below his best no-one seems to want to criticise him.

Football fans, eh?

He's pretty much mastered the art of the one touch pass.

He was decent today. Some really nice passes at times and kept the ball better than most of our players today.

I think there is a definite scribbling in permanent marker on every chalkboard in every home dressing room around the country. "Get in the face of Carrick and don't give him any time on the ball". I think that the boards now may actually just ship with it printed in one corner in bold.

Not started the season to the best of his ability, but was very good today and at least maintains a decent level consistently. Kind of feel for him having to play alongside Fellaini, deserves someone so much better.

Anybody noticed him grasping his thigh ? I was worried that he pulled his muscle there, hope he's ok.

It was around 80th minute or so.

I saw Evans and Jones limping at one stage as well. Still I thought he was a bit up and down tonight. Especially when we were under pressure and he wouldn't drive into space on the ball he would hold it up and let everyone settle then fire a harmless pass which did nothing to re-open play.

It upsets our tempo and stops us from re-building momentum back in the game through precise counter pressure.

It's happening again isn't it? Where he's playing with a different person every game and just can't get into his stride.

That's no excuse, some of his forward passes were woeful. I wasn't paying close attention on individual players, as was just too pissed off during the game, but he caught my eye with some spectacularly pathetic passes. He needs to improve.

History proves the man plays better when he's in a settled partnership in midfield. I'm not saying he doesn't need to improve..

We were stupidly reliant on him last season, and completely failed to address that and appear to somehow be more reliant on him than ever before this season.

He played in 36 out of the 38 league games last season, his most appearances in the league. It wouldn't be a problem if he wasn't the wrong side of 30.

Any news on his injury? Really worrying if he is out for the Arsenal game...

Think I would prefer Jones man marking Ramsay. To me it's worrying that he be in for the Arsenal game from a defensive point of view. Players have waltzed past him far to often for a while now.

Ghaliboy, you're glad Carrick is out for the Arsenal game and would prefer Jones?

Seriously?

Sometimes I wonder if redcafe hosts fans of United from alternate universes.

No, where did I say that? I said I think I'd prefer someone man marking Ramsay. It's worrying because Carrick's defensive game has been off for a while now and we're vulnerable to quick sharp counter football in which Arsenal can pull off quite easily with the front four they are playing with at the moment.

Sorry I'm not in the line-up to suck Carrick's dick. He has flaws and they have become pretty evident over the last two seasons no matter how fantastic he's been in attack and at 'screening'.

Man mark Ramsey? Bloody hell man, what would you do with Cazorla and Ozil then!

Anyone else not think it was a coincidence that he was missing yesterday and suddenly our play through the middle was much quicker and more incisive?

I think he's been really poor the last few league games. He was shocking against Stoke, every bit as bad as Fellaini in the Southampton game, and against Sunderland there was a noticable and infuriating difference in the speed of his play in the second half compared to the first.

He seems to be another one of our supposedly key "experienced" players who think they've earnt the right to take three times as long on the ball as every opponent they face.

I've been saying for a while now that Carrick is the complete opposite of what is needed in a combination with Cleverley. TC get's no ball movement and no quick wires cut through the middle of the park. I mean Jones doesn't really offer it up in any great way but the extra mobility and willingness to pass the ball and move just makes Cleverley's game worlds better.

Especially lately with Carrick it's rarely get the ball with space, move the players in front of you and/or open up a passing lane. It's just get it, look, fire an absolute laser at someone and then sit back. There is definitely a time for that kind of midfield play but that time is not when Cleverley is in there. Maybe if Carrick had a water carrier for him doing all the defensive work that could actually close and press play, but apart from that I just think he's far to slow and immobile for this kind of broken 4-2/3-1 system that we are playing at the moment.

Carrick and Cleverley have never had a good game together. It's not like they were there working their arses off when we beat Chelsea City and Arsenal last season.

The pair of them will benefit from a consistent run together and it's obvious how Moyes is slowly knowing how to best utilise his players. Carrick will be straight back in and I'm sure normal service will resume soon enough.

I'd have to tailor our team to play against Arsenal and that would probably mean a midfield 3 with Carrick and some legs, although that probably won't happen.

One minute Rio is to blame, the next it's Giggs, then it's Fellaini and now it's Carrick. Funny how some of the favourites on here (particularly forwards) can go an hour of a game miscontrolling simple passes and giving it away for fun but still get their bumholes licked. It's a collective problem that is slowly becoming better.

Against top opponents it is a good thing, believe. Slowing up play is a much needed talent. But in case of non top 5 opponents, it might cost a couple of goals or the match itself!

He was excellent against Sunderland (his best game of the season) and was very good vs. Southampton. Using the word "shocking" to describe his performance against Stoke pretty much sums up your view of him and your agenda.

Untrue and terrible hyperbole, their best game was against City last year.

Nah, that's bollocks. Noodle's always been very fair with Carrick and was one of the few who defended him when he was a scapegoat on here throughout 2010.

That doesn't matter at all. You can form an agenda at any given time, regardless of previous opinions...

Fulham gave us so much time in that first half, I don't think carrick would have hurt us had he been playing from the start. You can't really look at things in isolation like that otherwise we should be playing giggs and jones in midfield atm as they probably gave us our best overall cm performance against Liverpool. Carricks not been at his best yet but I wouldn't say he's had a really poor game yet or anything, and personally I think the idea that Clev can't play with him speaks more of clev's failings than Carricks. Carrick has played with so many different types of midfielder in his time here from their style to their quality but its generally not impact his game.
