Alas poor Carrick...WTF has happened?

If you're going to lose the ball like that at least get on your bike and win it back. It's not even 10 minutes into the game and he just ambled after it.

More serious questions about the defensive side of his game.

It wasnt his fault. Blaming him would just be deflecting attention from the De Gea blunder.

His mistake resulted in a tame shot from outside the box because there were defenders between the striker and the keeper. It was a nothing situation that happens in almost every game.

It was his fault, that chance never should have been conceded. De Gea made a bad mistake in the second instance but it was a bad mistake from Carrick too.

feck off Valencia and sort your life out.

He has been phenomenal in the second half. Won every tackle, intercepted balls, been in the right position, dictated play and tempo, and created several chances.

Carrick was huge in this 2nd half. Great passing. Winning crucial balls. Much better with Cleverley next to him.

He was incredible today, I want to get his name tattooed on someone elses head.

He was incredible in the second half. Wow.

He had 3 game winning passes in that second half that split the Newcastle defence, luckily for us we took one of them.

He's really stepped it up and taken on the mantle of main man. He did early last season too but stepped to the side a bit when Scholes came back and came into form.

Now he knows it's him that is expected to do it.

His performance picked up even with scholes on the pitch, though it was better with Clev. Like I've said before I don't think it's as simple as what partner, it's down to the rest of the team as well. As a whole we were quite sloppy first half, second half everyone largely picked their games up and it contributed to a much better performance from all.

I like how despite not having his best first half he was still trying tough passes all game and it's good because he has it in his locker.

Turned it round in the second half for sure! 78% pass completion is very low for him, it was that kind of game though, low quality and mistake laden frenetic stuff. Must have been all the Brits in our team.

What a player.

Amazing how he transforms from a rolls-royce of a player to a simpleton the moment he plays with Scholes.

He played some beautiful passes today.

The best one was actually a through ball to Giggs which lead to a chance for Hernandez (I think) in the 2nd half. It was an incredibly difficult pass to make in those conditions, but he made it look easy.

He's a class act all-round.

Yep, in terms of his composure on the ball and accuracy of his passing he is IMO world class.

His passing is very good, but when closed down his composure's often a weaker point. I'll admit that it's been absolutely fantastic recently, but I'll reserve a final judgement on whether his general composure's improved until he's regularly showing it against the top teams.

Can't work out how such a good player is so easily affected by whoever plays alongside him. He just seems like he has no ideas when he plays next to Scholes.

On a day when just about every other United player was overhitting passes, Michael showed his class.

Heroic performance. Astonishing that many United fans still do not rate him.

He's a very good midfielder who's come into an excellent run of form. I'd reserve the world class label for the very top players.

He is our top player, mate.

He was solid from the start of his adventure in United and looks like he's keeping his game together through all the years.

Not the hero type player, maybe not even world class in fullest meaning of the world but he's always there for the team.

I still think that's more a consequence of us tending to play a wide formation than a major weakness on his part. All the midfielders deemed good at dealing with pressure play in narrow teams. No doubt he can be a little sloppy at times/not assertive enough but I think this one weakness gets overstated.

They way he picked out that last past, and lots of others for that matter, I was so amazed I was thinking more of the assist then the fact that we were actually winning. Man of the match by country miles, our most important midfielder.

Sometimes you only value a player when they are out injured, let's hope he remains fit, without him we would have one of the worst midfield in recent years.
