African Teams - WC2014

African football is improving, just because two out of four have been utterly shite does not mean the whole continent's football is terrible. Look at Spain and Portugal, two european sides who have some of the best teams in the tournament - I know Portugal hasn't got the best side in recent years but they have a good squad - Spain knocked out, Portugal defeated 4 nil by Germany. Its not so simple. Japan were poor.

Don't see why you're comparing to european teams? Anyway, I don't see how you can say they are improving. The Cameroon and Nigerian teams of the past shit on anything the current sides from the continent have to offer.

I think people were quick to show their vindication after the 1st round of games. Now 2 of the African teams are virtually through to the 2nd round and we could potentially have 4/5 countries making it. I've always said that only a handful of European teams in the WC (about 4) are truly better than African counterparts. Case in point Bosnia. I said they're just Serbia 2.0 and now I must resist the temptation to feel smug.
There's still an overall gap in quality but
as you saw against Germany, the likes of Ghana - when they can be bothered, are a match for anyone.

Ghana is a pretty good team.
They played well against Germany during the last Wcup and in 2006 they were unlucky to meet Brazil! They unlike Ivory Coast seem to have quite a few younger players on show!

Ghana to me are the best african team in the competition. Shame they are un such a tight group. I really dont see them qualifying but on their day they are a match for anyone.
Nigeria bottled the game against Iran, but i believe the result can be put into perspective after Iran's showing against the argies yesterday too. I reckon we could go far, Provided we get a favourable 2nd round draw. This team has quality, It just need to be a little more composed in front of goal, Although having Players like Musa and Ameobi in your team says alot about our quality going forward.
The CIV on the other hand will almost likely drop out in the next round if they do make it through, the real class players ib the team are either ageing or cant really be arsed and their Defensive half is a disaster waiting to happen.
That said, Wouldnt surprise me if we get about 2 african teams in the quarters, As i think the pairings from R16 onwards will be much more even than previous WC.

Very harsh on Bosnia. Their first ever appearance on a big stage and they did very good against a title contender. Then there is the huge refereeing blunder today that steered the entire game (and surprisingly isn't getting that much attention).

Pointing out that the refs are having an awful world cup is so last week. Now it's all about upsets and how this is the best world cup ever.

I said before the world cup began that I expected Nigeria and IC to do well, Ghana is my team but given our group I knew we'd only have the slightest chance of qualifying. I'm not going to rue us losing against the USA b/c if we won/drawn that match we potentially wouldn't have gotten the result we did last night.
And that performance against Germany was special.

Hopefully Portugal can do us a favour today they need to restore some pride, I'm sure they don't want to be bottom of the group so a win or draw against USA would be helpful

Bloody Lagosians with their deluded expectations

Lagosians are football-crazy. It's not unusual for them to gather weapons, visit & threaten the families of the players that aren't pulling their weight in the squad.

If the management & the organisation of the Nigerian football federation is up to 25% of what we have here in England, the team would be getting to the Semis at least.

However, the management is a disgrace. The best players rarely make the squad cos parents have to bribe coaching staff to include their wards in the list of invitees. The senators all have a player they want to be in the team. The whole process is lethargic & the players are poorly funded.

Algeria doing very well so far. If they get a point against Russia, they're through to last 16.

We need a "European Teams- WC2014" thread

Seriously, only France, Netherlands, Germany and may be Croatia were good as regards both performance and results. There's a good chance we end with just 4 European teams in the last 16 !!

Unless South Korea beat Belgium by a few?
I'm not counting on it. Belgium, even if they have been underwhelming, still has more overall quality than us. It'll be a tough enough task to win by one against Belgium, let alone winning it by a few.

Yeah we were. From looking like a horrible world cup for African teams to possibly having more get THREE times as many teams getting through than 2010. It's crazy, would be great if it happens! Nothing is done yet though. I can see one of Algeria, Nigeria, Ivory coast losing their place despite being in a good position, it's too much work for Ghana now, although they can hold their heads high after out playing a team that could win the whole competition. Ivory coast and Algeria are one loss from missing out and Iran are a break away goal against a Bosnia with nothing to play for away from getting past Nigeria.

Id say definitely at least one will miss out but I don't know who yet.

I just hope mostly that Ivory coast get through as they are our best chance of getting back to back quarter final appearances in the world cup. Overall if two teams make it and one gets through to the quarters and losses it is still a more promising world cup for African football.

Yes I do think Algeria will go through. Based on today that is deserved.

Great performances from the African contingent over the last few games. I can only hope we get 2 or 3 teams through. We might yet cause a few more so called 'upsets'. The biggest issue I've found with our teams is that they rarely focus and concentrate for a full minutes. We'd score a goal in the 70th and lead and reckon the game's won only to concede 5 mins later.

They are all cursed with the short attention span. The mental strength is zero. They score a goal & just lose their heads for the remainder of the game. Nigeria were this close to eliminating Italy in 94 and Okocha felt that was the time to display his crude football skills. Instead of holding the ball & knocking it about to to wear the Azurris down, he kept on showboating.......then Baggio struck!

It's infuriating. Happens time and again. I just hope most of the teams hold their own in the last games and some get through.

You can't beat that out of African teams until their managers ban goal celebrations & drum it in their ears that the next 15 mins after they score is the most crucial for them.......

However, I doubt it will stick. Gyan just wants to dance. He doesn't score because he wants his team to win, he scores so he can show his dance steps to the world. Silly rabbit!

Weridly though - he was probably their least selfish player in both there first two games. He generally does look to pass/bring others into play - which is something considering a) whats going on around him and b) he's the main striker.

He'll score against Portugal and becomes Africa's leading scorer at World Cups - which isn't a bad accolade to hold at all.

You completely misread me.....
I am not criticising Gyan here for what he does. I am just highlighting the efforts he puts after scoring with those dance steps. That energy can be conserved to focus on the small period after he has scored for his team. African teams always lack that concentration especially when they in a winning position.

Lol I hope you're not blaming the lack of concentration on goal celebrations. Trust me, there's no effort in choreographing dance routines when it comes to Gyan (or Ghanaians for that matter).
