Adrien Rabiot | signs 1 year deal at Juventus. See you all next year

Only issue I would see is potentially the salary he'll want, isn't he on a very good salary at Juve - net of tax?

Is he not after insane wages anymore then?

It's too different situations, he is at the end of his contract. Something that people decided to ignore last year is that it made no sense for him to take a lower wage than the one he had for 22-23. Why would anyone decide to take a lower wage one year earlier than needed?

He's been impressive this year and seems to have matured a bit. For a free transfer - and a reasonable wage - he'd be an excellent midfield addition. Would add a bit of steel for the games where Eriksen is bypassed/we're not guaranteed possession.

Personally, if we have the choice of him over Sabitzer, I'd go for Rabiot.

Midfield additions of Rabiot and Lavia - with McTominay - would increase our quality in that part of the field, and probably bring in some transfer funds.

I'd prefer him over Sabitzer and on a free transfer you can't complain too much but neither are a profile of midfielder we should be going for in my opinion. Would much prefer a Casemeiro alternative (i.e. Lavia) and a controlling midfielder to upgrade on Eriksen (i.e. someone like De Jong).

I am not sure I follow, I agree Rabiot and Lavia can improve the midfield but surely not McTominay, right? He should be let go as he is clearly not good enough

I would take him and Sabitzer for about £20m for the pair. Injuries will occur and it's always good to have options!

Sabitzer doesn’t play now on a loan. Why would we waste £20m for him now to play. Rather use it on a keeper.

I think the Sabitzer thing is dead. If we're not playing him now and he's behind Eriksen and Fred in the pecking order, we're not gonna spend money to buy him in the summer clearly.

If ETH believes in Rabiot as a starter, then him + a young DM would probably be good enough business for the midfield this summer. I think McTominay might get sold, as he wants more playing time for himself, and VDB sent out on loan to get minutes and improve his fitness after the injury. Which would leave us with Case, new DM, Rabiot, Fred, Bruno and Eriksen. That would be a very good midfield if Rabiot has a season like the one he's having.

If his wages were a problem during a transfer, being a free agent will push these even higher/huge signing on fee.

Lavia? I don’t think we need a DM as such. We need a player with good retention. Rabiot will cover DM if required too.

Think if Donny goes with 1 from Fred or McTominay, Sabitzer and Rabiot give us an uplift in quality, resilience and technical ability.

Slightly off topic, you would hope Donny could turn it around but I am not so confident.

He’s free. It’s what normally happens. His wages were a problem in the summer as we had to pay Juve a transfer fee too.

Donny

Ugarte is reportedly negotiating with Liverpool, he has a €60m release clause.

I agree about Alex Scott, I think he'd be a great long term solution but I think we might wait and see how Hannibal/Mainoo develop.

Yeah there are a lot of media links between Ugarte and Liverpool at the moment. Praying that it doesn’t materialise as he’ll be fantastic wherever he goes, but at Liverpool especially he’ll add exactly what they’re missing.

Alex Scott is great and will be at a top 6 club in the next 2-3 years regardless of whether he makes the immediate jump or takes a stepping stone. I’d rather we get ahead of the game for once and go in for him now rather than pay triple in a few years. Perhaps loan Bristol City both or either Mainoo or Hannibal as a sweetener, with Scott moving on loan to the top of the championship or lower prem (eg. Sunderland if they go up).

Maybe Lavia, I don't know. Rabiot can cover the DM spot but he's better as a box-to-box CM and he prefers that position himself.

His wages were a problem because we offered him less than what he was on at Juve. His demands won't matter now, he's out of contract. Unless he plans to retire at 28, he'll have to accept the highest offer just like any other player.

As long as this is not our only midfield signing, then it makes a lot of sense. He's clearly a good player and will rotate well with Eriksen as they have complementary strengths. He's miles better than Sabitzer.

Rabiot on a free, and a steal of £40m for Kim - this is definitely the board saying they don't have the budget for a CB, CM and a world-class ST. Ten Hag will have to spread the budget and put most of his eggs on a striker.

Side note - Rabiot does fit in with the strong mentality that Ten Hag is gathering in this team

And they don't have that much money which is why they tried to sell him last summer.

They would have been 8th and out of Europe with the 15 points deduction. But now they're 2nd and guaranteed CL football next season. Might be that, plus the latest Pogba injury, change the situation for them? They don't really have that many good CMs left if they lose Rabiot.

Situation out of their hands though! If he feels he can do better than Juve then that's that for them.

It doesn't change the possibility that they can't match other teams offers. You can need a player all you want but if that player is offered better deals and is a free agent then you are out of luck.

Rabiot in terms of the type of player I'd say is definitely the right direction. He can run with the ball, he is reliable on the ball and press resistant, and a nice balance on the ball and defensively. Plus tall. The issue for me is maybe not being quite good enough compared to the top end guys (but an improvement on what we have), and age, not that just turning 28 is a problem in itself, but more because Eriksen, Fred, Casemiro and Bruno are all older than him and he'd be our youngest midfielder... At 28.

A younger guy like Kokcu or Lavia is vital as well to balance the age of our squad, but I'm happy we are looking into the free market as well. Woodward refused to do it, so far looks like Arnold and Murtaugh don't ignore it though.

Would be a good addition if we get rid of Mctominay and Fred to sign Rabiot and another CM. This other CM has to be the best of the lot or we're just marginally improving.

If he's our only addition in CM that's not good enough.

Why are Juventus not doing all they can to tie him up to a new contract?

It's catch 22 for them in some respects, its a really aging squad when you look at

Cuadrado - 34
Danilo - 31
Alex Sandro - 32
Leonardo Bonucci - Older than god
Angel Di Maria - 35
Mattia De Sciglio - 30
Paul Pogba - 30
Filip Kostic - 30

That is going to take quite a bit of surgery to fix and it looks like there are more pressing issues given there is a few decent players coming through. Moreover the TV deal in Serie A is peanuts compared to the Prem,. Guess it comes down to the point if they can afford to keep him if a few clubs outside of Italy will offer him a different package ?

I'd take him on a free, add korku and sabitzer.

Rabiot to allow us to sell home grown Mctominay to then fund a top midfield signing makes sense if we have FFP issues - but spending money on a 29 year Sabitzer who currently fails to start ahead of players we need to improve on is just proper baffling to me and I have no idea why people are arguing we should do it.

They won't be that badly off though. They have a host of really competitive youngsters all coming through at the same time. Surprisingly.
