I was on board with this transfer the other day but the more I think about it this is a terrible idea if we also get De Jong. We will find ourselves with De Jong, Rabiot, Fred, McTominay, Van De Beek, Eriksen and Bruno.

We may still be lacking the right partner for De Jong to give us the perfect blend in midfield in a years time and won’t be able to shift any of those players.

Go with De Jong +1 this season and get through as best we can. Loan Garner rather than sell if he wants first team football, although in terms of profile he may actually be the best partner for Frenkie.

Revisit next summer and target someone like Caicedo if we need a more physical box to box partner for De Jong.

We should really be considering offloading Van De Beek too. He is still nowhere near the first XI and we’re potentially adding two midfielders.

And what if De Jong doesn’t happen?

It's taking days on end to do this deal which looks pretty straight forward. And the club think they can wrap up another midfielder, full back, and an attacker or two before windows close?

And what if De Jong doesn’t happen?

Then we get Rabiot if we have no other alternatives, to at least give us another option. I just think if we get De Jong then Rabiot is potentially another player who’s not good enough to elevate us that takes another place in the squad without clearing out the existing players we have.

This makes perfect sense and is very obvious. Not sure why everyone keeps saying there’s no money - the budget is 120m plus sales. Oddly enough other clubs do sell young players - it’s only when we do it with Garner it’s some moral outrage. Maybe we shouldn’t have spent 60m on a CB when we only have 4 senior attackers? Just a thought.

Garner should be given a chance to prove himself. Wrong decision to sell him given how well he did at Forest last year. He's is better than McFred. Doesn't take much, but it's true.

Yup. Garner who doesn’t regularly start for England u21s is better than Fred who starts for Brazil. Makes great sense. You know so much more than ETH.

Ffs just get a fecking deal done, so much penny pinching we can't sign anyone
Penny pinching? Rabiot is asking for too high of a salary.

Any other time and the club gets slated for paying "deadwood" or "average" players too much.

Jheeze.

If Rabiot is the answer I don't know what the question is. He's not the same profile midfielder as De Jong. He's not a dominant physical presence who will handle Ndidi or Bissouma. What are we doing chasing him?

£20m for a player Juve were thinking of paying off to leave? A player who doesn't solve any of our biggest problems. Yes, he's better than McTominay as an #8. So are literally dozens of players who have moved this summer that we could have got. We could still bid for Konrad Laimer.

The energy and effort being wasted on trying to sign this player genuinely shocks me.

Ten Hag is surely going to walk. This is just an untenable situation. I had no desire for us to get rabiot but if ten Hag truly wanted him this must be an absolute knife to the gut for him

Yes! Arnautovic deal off, and now this one looking doomed.

We make not signing players feel like we've done well in the transfer market.

Getting turned down by players no one else are even in for and their own clubs don't want anymore now

Club is well and truly in the shitter right now

Yeah we are sinking further into the ground, much more and the lid will shut on us completely.

Fcking Konrad Laimer… if he’s so good why is he not mentioned with the world elite. All the guy does is run. He did nothing against Rangers.

Maybe we can actually scout hidden talented midfielders out there now?

Wait. People still think we'll sign de Jong??

Just let him go man. It’s not bloody prime Messi or Ronaldo we’re looking to sign. It’s Adrien Rabiot, a bang average footballer with a nigh on insane mother judging by some of the stuff she’s done.

Yeah if we do more than one deal on top of this it would be a huge shock.

Exactly.

If we ever want to stop this culture and expectation of ridiculous wages for average players, we have to be able to say no and walk away. I’ve no doubt this guy looks at us and thinks he can just demand the world as we’ve been paying it up for the past 10 years to anyone that can kick a ball.

How have we ended up wasting so much time on someone who is a very questionable signing. Dragging this one out is ridiculous.

We only got linked just over a week ago and we have had one meeting in which they asked for more than we wanted to pay, not sure how you can call that wasting time. I am pretty sure we told them to take it or leave it and considering Juve want him gone and nobody else is falling over themselves to sign him he may well agree to our offer. If he doesn't then we at least showed we are not a soft touch for players looking for a pay day anymore.
We are already looking at other targets and he might well find he has missed the boat if he tries to hold out.

Aye bet he'll be absolutely gutted to miss out on signing for us  :nervous:

He's better than Rabiot for a start. If it's a choice between £20m for Rabiot, and giving him over £200k a week so he can keep his desired post tax pay, and Laimer then I'm taking Laimer.

There is a time to be firm and another time when the team is desperate for reinforcements and specifically, defensive mids, after getting battered 4-0 to a bottom half club, where you just fecking get the players the manager wants and needs.

Yeah, sorry, but Rabiot on more than 200k is not the answer. To anything. Ever. Even that is too much, but when the club is paying 250k to someone like Rashford you can't expect anything less.

It's more of the same.

Well I would imagine sitting in the stands in Turin may be pleasant for the next few months but he already missed one World Cup and he stands to miss another if he can't get regular football. We may not be the prettiest girl at the ball but if he passes us up he might have to settle for some self gratification.
