Adrien Rabiot - Free Agent

There are better players fitting our target group, indeed. And we dont need his mama manager either

We still need another midfielder and now this looks unlikely I can't see where that's coming from

Wharton or Neves but both priced outside of our range. Otherwise no clue, I am only a muppet once talks become concrete hehe

Frustrating because could afford to sign two this summer if we hadn't pissed away £35m on Donny and then £80m plus on Antony too

I could understand not trying to sign him if he had a significant transfer fee, however on a free (yes I know sign on fee, wages etc) seemed like a no brainer.

He doesn't have a track record for drama, now the french press has a track record for making shit up and trying to create drama. Rabiot has done one thing wrong, one thing that can be labelled as drama and it's refusing to be a reserve option for the 2018 WC, that's it. The rest is BS, mainly created by L'Equipe to sell paper and PSG through Le Parisien to put pressure on players which has been revealed through the Football Leaks.

And frankly it's annoying to see that PSG's dirty actions have actually worked, they are the ones that mainly created the drama through social media using bots and paying papers.

Now compare it to his last 5 years with Juventus, has Juventus had any issues with him, any drama with him or his agent?
Nope, none.

I am concerned about Ugarte more than Rabiot. The latter is tried and tested.

Ugarte is a surplus player.

Worth a punt on a free is Rabiot.

Rabiot has never been tested in the premier league and is coming to the end of his career and after a final payday. Wages alone will be crazy because of no transfer fee. Ugarte has time o his side and if it doesn’t work out we can still resell him. Only issue being the transfer fee PSG are demanding for him seems to be around €20m more than we are willing to pay.

He's 29, chief. Not forty.

United need a blend of youth and experience.

If Ugarte fails, which is quite possible, it will be nigh-on impossible to shift him on. He's up for sale as psg want a chump to fund their Neves deal and is himself a stranger to the EPL.

If needs be, do both, but I have reservations about Ugarte age and price do not assuage.

Thanks for the detailed response, Drainy.

Christ.

Ok. Rabiot is obviously a good player and the Caf overplays concerns about him but to say the other player is no good because the selling club doesn't want him anymore is ridiculous, especially when the player is a specialist. The reports are that PSG want more creativity in midfield, so a defensive specialist is not required for most games, and they could use the money for signing a player with the profile they want. That's just squad management and something United will be seeing more of because football people are in charge so less keeping good players for decades for the brief moments when they are useful.

Manchester United have a lot of attacking midfielders and only Casemiro as a defensive option, so without going into too much detail as it's far more complex than I can justify time to, Ugarte is a good fit

Have you actually read anything about the situation at PSG?

Or seen any analysis on Ugarte?

I'm guessing not.

We need a high volume passer in midfield, we currently lack that. The only player who fits that profile is Eriksen, and dude can barely run 30mins on the pitch.

Mainoo and Bruno are guaranteed starters, so Ugarte being the 3rd player doesnt fill me with confidence.

I presume they mean the reported interest in Neves and that suggests Ugarte would be back up, and the thought that PSG prefer the cash to reinvest

Ugarte is a backup and on the transfer list whether Neves is signed or not, unless he improves.

Which situation at PSG?
He's being moved out as he doesn't fit in with Luis Enrique's tiki taka / heavy possession based football. Doesn't mean he has failed. He just doesnt fit the footballing philosophy of the manager.

He has also not been good, it's not just a philosophy thing. In the context of elite Football he has been subpar in pretty much all aspects.

If we sign Rabiot on £250.000 a week in a 3 + 1 contract - the worst it can hit us financially is just short of £40 million for a French international. I am not saying he will accept that - but chances are he will as he is on slightly less than 2/3 of that now.

Rabiot turns 30 next year, so I wouldn't give him that big a contract. Think he could be a useful player this coming season, but beyond that I think we'll want to upgrade

Exactly my point he’s 29 and this is his last big contract, if he stays 2/3 years then who is offering him a big contract after this one? It’ll be a one year deal anywhere else he goes. I get we need experience in the team and we still have Casemiro who it seems won’t be leaving anytime soon so I’d rather focus on Ugarte than Rabiot out of the two. I’m not against signing Rabiot, I’d rather the money went on a younger player.

If Ugarte fails it won’t be that impossible to move him on at all. If you look at the players we have had over the years who have failed, they’ve went on and done well elsewhere. Forlan for one don’t really get going but then left and had a great career. Other notable players include, Depay, Zaha and Lukaku, all failed but we found buyers for them all. Might not recoup the outlay but still think we will get decent enough return on the investment.

I’m not against the signing and think he would work well, but if it’s a choice between the two then I’d prefer the younger player who can adapt and grow into the role better.
With signing on fees etc as well for Rabiot who knows what the total fee would look like, with Casemiro still around, I’d prefer to keep him alongside Ugarte as experience. Who better to learn from than one of the best holding midfielder’s to have played the game.

That would explain why Hjulmand has become a darling down there after replacing Ugarte

We are potentially getting a player who is limited on the ball. We are adding him to our team that is already limited on the ball.

I didn't follow SCP when he was there but his reputation doesn't match what I have seen from him at PSG. He has been passenger and he is lucky that the likes of Soler and to a lesser extent Ruiz haven't been better. Now he is young and one year is maybe too soon to draw conclusions.

He was very good at SCP but quite quick after arriving there where comments to the effect of the coach actually rating Hjulmand higher.

Why should we give him twice as much as he was earning at Juventus?

No one should give anything. The club will offer whatever wage they believe is good value. Also 250k gross isn't twice his most recent contract, it's roughly similar.

I can’t see the club going anywhere near that wage. For him or almost any player.

You can see the wages we’ve given recently and I’m sure when existing contracts come up for negotiation, they’d look to lower them.

And I wouldn’t give a 3+1 for someone with no PL experience, that age and the previous issues re him/his mother. Even if exaggerated.

A 2+1 on around £150k/wk (max) maybe

There is no desire to sign one this summer by looks of it,also seems Rabiot was only ever backup target if Ugarte wasn't possible. I hoped we wanted both of them but sadly not the case.

Noone in the new management structure with champion a punt on Rabiot and risk unsettling the dressing room. They want young players on 2nd professional contract not journeymen who are likely to degrade both physically and mentally (I've got my last big contract - I can phone it in now - ala casemiro)

Yeah and the recent noises from Eriksen also suggests he's accepted his rotation role, and will stay on this year. Which means we are probably just going for one midfield signing, as I dont see Casemiro leaving either. McT probably will.

-----Casemiro/DM---Mainoo/Mount
------------------Bruno/Eriksen

Either way our midfield will need a overhaul soon.

I didn't say we should - I just gave an example how much he would cost us over 3 years if we give him that. If we give him £200.000 - it's down to just above £30 million. My point being - it's not a huge amount.

How are Mainoo, Bruno, Eriksen limited on the ball?

As a team our work with the ball is poor. Everyone knows this it's not news. We have had Casemiro, McTominay and Amrabat play as 6's and their limitations have always affected us. Adding yet another player who isn't very good on the ball won't help us at keeping the ball and progressing the play.

Casemiro loves an ambitious pass but doesn't pull them off on a regular basis. McTominays very safe and amrabat was very slow to release. If Urgate is limited on the ball it affects the other midfielders. Psg themselves probably noticed the same thing.

What is exact position of Rabiot and his ability ? seems like no. 8 ..that is where Mainoo..Erikson and Mctominay sometimes play..we mainly need a no. 6..
29 and high wages might not be ideal.

Everytime I see Erikson and Scott's name together as our midfield choice, I want to cry.
