Admit it you were wrong

I can't believe I'm going to admit to these things.

- In the early or mid 2000's I watched a guy named Javier Balboa in a 30 minute cameo for Real Madrid and convinced he'd become a top player. I've never heard about him since.
- I thought Macheda would be partnering Rooney by now and be a top player
- I thought Obertan would be a great player for us
- I believed in Shinji

- Even when he was terrible for Chelsea, I still thought Torres wasn't finished yet
- Was not amused with signing Daley Blind, I thought he was the Dutch O'Shea and would've complained about it here, but with the other signings it was impossible to be a downer about anything.
 - wow, don't be a scout, ever!

Thought Anderson would develop into one of the best AM in the world.
Was really excited when we signed Ashley Young as thought he would get double figures for goals & assists.
Ben Foster to be our number 1 for the next 10-15 years when he was on loan at Watford.
Joshua King to be a top striker
Darren Gibson to cement his place in our midfield and be a mainstay

Thought when Falcao signed he'd be on 20 goals by now

Most recently:
  • Manucho would be a class signing, pretty much based entirely on his performances for Angola at AFCON.
  • Bebe would blossom into a decent winger and give us one or two world class seasons in his late twenties.
  • Anderson and Cleverley were the future of our midfield.
  • Rafael, Fabio, Jones, Smalling and Evans were all going to be world class and our defence would be sorted for years.
  • Welbeck would be here for life and be one of our key players.

In the past:
  • Barthez was going to be a great replacement for the Great Dane.
  • Phil Neville was going to be the future of our midfield, based off his bossing of Viera in one game (the 6-1, I think) while Keane was out.
  • Veron was going to take us to a godly tier of football.
  • Luke Chadwick was going to be a regular for our starting 11 and tear apart defences throughout Europe.
  • John O'Shea was going to develop into a Roberto Carlos-esque full back.
  • Darren Fletcher was never going to make it.

It broke my hear that we didn't the best out of Veron. On hindsight difficult to see where he would play with the embarrassment of riches we had in midfield.

Add me to the list of people that rated Obertan. He'll "be the next Henry" I believe I said to my dad and brother .

He nearly did in his first season and he was injured a fair bit aswell.

1. Thought we'd have a midfield three of Pogba, Morrison and Tunnicliffe dominating sides in the Premier League. That turned out well.
2. Thought Alan Smith would transform himself into the next Roy Keane after that one performance against Chelsea
3. Thought Heinze would go down in our history books and have his name sung forever

Pretty sure I'm missing a whole lot more

Thought Red Café would be a place I could chill and becomes my sanctuary whenever united have a bad result.

Obviously there was a lot of it, but here are the most embarrassing:
- United under Moyes regime would play better football than under Fergie (in the last years)
- Rooney will be a world class misdfielder in his 30s
- Not a long time ago I thought Mata will be sold as we have other players who can do what he does for us and contribute much more to the team in general, and didn’t think Mata on the right would work

I didn't think Liverpool would close the gap between us this season from its height at 12 or whatever down to 2 before our last game.

Even with losing to us, impressive form, and could easily beat Arsenal to 4th. Of course it's possible they could even beat Arsenal and ourselves to 3rd. Doubtless twists and turns await.

Thought Kevin De Bruyne was average and Chelsea did well getting 23.5m for him.

I knew Pogba was going to be class didn't think he would develop that quick though

I was a Cleverly backer. I'm still gutted he flopped. Never the same after that Kevin Davies dickhead tackle.

I thought:

- Cleverley would be world class (I even had his picture as my facebook cover photo...)
- Welbeck would be the next Man Utd player to stay here for life
- Anderson is better than Fabregas
- Nani is world class consistently (he still is world class, sometimes)
- Kagawa would be as successful as Park
- SAF will be our manager until his health doesn't allow him to do so
- Falcao would destroy the league this season
- Ravel Morrison and Pogba would be our next Scholes and Giggs
- Giggs will never retire

- Welbeck and Kagawa are United level...

And I actually didn't rate Kagawa when he was at BVB during his first spell there. Always thought he's overrated, but when he signed for us, I've immediately changed my opinion about him.

United would be prepared for Fergie's retirement.
United wouldn't sack Moyes, they'd give him at least a season and a bit more to bed in.
Lee Cattermole was going to be an an regular in the England side.
Fabian Barthez was going to be United number 1 for years.
Ashley Young was going to be a great signing for United.

I can relate to quite a few of the posts in this thread. I was certainly a fan of Cleverley and even got my shirt in 2011/12 printed with Cleverley 23 on the back. Really gutted that he hasn't reached the heights we thought he might.

Don't think I ever fully understood the Cleverley hype. What were people basing their optimism on? He never seemed to have any real outstanding skills or a dominant personality.

Back on topic: I thought Heinze was brilliant and Evra was a bit of a pointless signing.

I loved Bellion and couldn't understand why he never played.
I wanted us to sign Hatem Trabelsi.
I thought it was a mistake to only sign Carrick in the 06/07 window.
I thought Tim Howard was the answer to our keeper crisis.
I thought Di Maria would take the absolute piss out of the prem.

  • I thought Kagawa would be the next big thing after Ronaldo.

  • I thought Cleverley would be a England great.

  • I thought Welbeck would be a one man club.

  • I wanted Jose Mourinho to be the next manager after SAF.

  • I though Falcao would be the signing of the century......

You still have hope, he's 29

Veron. Although does anyone else remember just how good he was in his first 10 games or so? And the moments of genius he would provide in europe? There was one pass in particular to Ole i think against deportivo that was breathtaking

Summer 2006 is a big one I'm sure many got wrong. We finished way off Chelsea the year before and all we signed was Michael Carrick while they bought more top world stars. I remember lots of fans fuming and people predicting us outside the top 3. We won the league brilliantly.

yup. we sold van nistelrooy and many wonder where the goals will come from.

chelsea also signed ballack and shevchenko. we got carrick (who proved to be a fantastic signing!!) and kuszczak.

what a season that was.

I thought Berbatov would be the new Cantona. I was convinced.
( still thought he was great for us and wish he'd been given more of a chance )

me too. still the most exciting 31st august signing that we'll ever see. the saga was going on and on from the beginning of july and imagine waking up the morning on 1st september and all the papers are all out about us signing berba.

- Thought Anderson would be one of the best midfielders in the world
- Did not think City would manage to win anything
- Thought Januzaj would tear the league apart this season
- Thought we would hire Mou when Fergie quit, even more so after we met them in CL
- Was sure Vidal would sign for us

I actually thought Tom Cleverley was gonna be a great player for us. Thank god for Herrera, the player I thought Cleverley would've become.

I thought Darren Fletcher would retire at the club. Shame he didn't.
I once said "we'll beat Roma 6-1 back at OT". I was clearly wrong.
I thought Barthez was going be an outstanding signing. He was. Sort of.

I thought Falcao would outscore Rooney and RVP.

Kagawa would be better than Hazard.

Finally saved the best until last. Prior to 2006 World Cup I said England would win the 2010 tournament! Bit of a bold prediction but I blame that on my age at the time.
