Admit it you were wrong

Thought Nemanja was going to be an average backup defender for United at best and we should've gone for a more established name at that time (the likes of Thuram or maybe Nesta if we threw the bank at Milan). One of the most awful predictions in hindsight that.

Thought Adriano was going to be a future Ballon D'Or candidate and the next great Brazilian player after Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. He justified that notion somewhat in 2004 and 2005, but that was about as well as he ever performed. Shame how that turned out.

Thought Fernando Cavenaghi was going to be one of the best attacking players of this era, going off the talent he displayed for River Plate and the Argentina U-20 team, especially the 2003 U-20 World Cup. Never lived up to that promise sadly, spent a few years bouncing around at Spartak, Villarreal and Bordeux. Now back at River Plate.

That said, I was really impressed by another immensely talented player in the 2003 U-20 World Cup and hoped United would sign him. This one did turn out to become one of the best players of his generation regardless of position and maybe one of the Top 5-10 central-ish attacking midfielders ever. So there was some redemption there I guess.

I've definitely been guilty of some right royal clangers...

- Thought the day we signed Nani and Anderson would go down in history as a masterstroke coup for the club.
- Thought Cleverley was going to be a pivotal player for the club, and could develop into one of the best CMs in European football.
- Thought Rafael was going to become the best RB in the world after his debut in the Champions League (I think it was against Dynamo Kyiv). To be fair, he looked properly outstanding in that game.
-Thought Kleberson was going to be a hit at United after the 2002 World Cup.

Looking at this, it's probably best to wait until players prove themselves before making such lofty predictions. But that isn't half as fun...

  • That Welbeck will retire as a United player and I wouldn't miss him too much.
  • That Evans was above average.
  • That Moyes would be able to do an 'okay' job.
  • That Woodward was sensible money maker and not a muppet of the highest order.
  • That Jones would be great at 22-23 years old.
  • I didn't thought that we would be that close from City in March.
  • That Cleverley had some talent.

  • The Premier League would never be won on goal difference
  • Chelsea would never win the Champions League
  • Shinji Kagawa would end up becoming as good as David Silva has been for City
  • Gabriel Obertan was our replacement for Ronaldo
  • Zoran Tosic would eventually replace Giggs
  • Ben Foster was our readymade replacement for Edwin.

Until quite recently I believed Anderson would become a massive CM and solve all our issues with the midfield...
...but when we signed him I believed he would become a 10+ goals and 15+ assists a season attacking left midfielder.

Macheda had a future at the club
Shinji Kagawa was so good he would play for Barcelona
At the start of last season I thought we could challenge for the title after watching our opener vs Swansea
Welbeck would score 20+ goals for us a season
Obertan would make it as a squad player here
Fellaini would have no chance at getting in the side with LVG in charge
Di Maria would be the best player in the league and win PFA this year

Mine:
  • Carrick should not have been offered a new deal. (Around 2010, I think)
  • Moyes was the best available replacement for Ferguson. Yep, the United way and all that.
  • DDG probably just another failure in the hunt for a top keeper.
  • United could beat 2011 Barcelona.
  • Ferguson was going to go on for at least four more years. A man like that is too terrified of waking up with a lack of purpose to retire.
  • United will always attack.
  • United's identity was complimented, not carried, by Ferguson.

  • Thought Di Maria would runaway with the Player of the year award after the first few games
  • Thought Macheda and Welbeck would the future strike force for United
  • Thought LvG would still be the great manager he was before

Falcao would be amazing for us.
Fellaini had no future here.
Welbeck would be our long term striker.
Kagawa would completely change our style of play and would be regarded as one of the best no.10s in the world

-Hernandez would eventually become more than a poacher after his goal vs Valencia.
-Nani was our new Ronaldo after the Arsenal victory.
-Fletcher would retire at United.
-Cleverly made us play better football.
-Scholes would never come out of retirement.
-Kagawa would score buckets of goals for us and be an assist machine.
-Di Maria would destroy anyone in the league after his good start.
-Smalling and Jones would become the best partnership in the league.
-Mata would save our season when we signed him.

I'm sure there's quite a few but off the top of my head and from reading this thread:

  • I thought Evra was a waste of money when we had Heinze and Silvestre at the club
  • Mourinho will succeed SAF
  • Thought Jones would be a much better player than he is right now
  • Thought Foster was a better keeper than Hart
  • Fellaini would have no chance at getting in the side with LVG in charge (thanks DanNistelrooy)

That Rafael, Jones, Smalling, Evans and Fabio would leave our defence sorted for years.. Definitely didn't expect that we'd need to replace all of them.
Wrong with Fellaini though I still don't think long term he'll be anything more then squad player.

I thought Moyes was the answer

I thought we'd sign Batistuta, Juninho, Shearer, I was wrong. I was wrong.

He did become a massive CM...

I thought that every United youth product ever was going to be a world beater.

While I really wasn't a fan of David Moyes being SAF's replacement, I expected us to challenge for the title anyway. I remember I could not get my head around Shearer at MOTD naming Chelsea and City favourites for next year's title at the end of the 2012/2013 season, while not mentioning us.

And then up until 1 januari 2014, when we lost at home against Spurs, I thought we would put it right. I actually thought we would still put in a title challenge and win it up until that match. In the end the scousers gained form and they were the ones putting in a proper title challenge, I couldn't believe it and I still can't believe we not only failed to qualify for CL, but also failed to get European football.

Lots of possibles, but I remember exactly where I was when I heard we had wasted £1.1 million on a guy called Eric Cantona

I thought Rodrigo Possebon looked a real classy player :nervous:

I thought Wilshere would end up as one of the best midfielders in the world.

I thought Evans would be an excellent defender.

I was convinced Ravel Morrison would be the next best thing in football.

I didn't think I would ever like Rooney again.

I thought Busquets was a massive weak link and we would expose him in the CL final in 2009 (I hadn't watched him, only thought this because I'd barely heard of him).

after 8-2 v le arse , we were going to win the league in a trot.
that with evans , smalling , jones , raffa , fabio and spanish dave the back line was set for 10+ years. dave worked out.
anderson was going to be mustard "next season".

I thought Heinze was an absolute legend.
I genuinely believed Anderson would win a Balon D'Or.
Until this year I was convinced Jordan Henderson was garbage.
As others have said, I was 100% sure Diego Costa would be useless in the Prem.
At one stage I was convinced we would sign Michael Essien and I was devastated when he opted for Chelsea.
For the first 17 years of my life, I thought Duncan Ferguson was Fergie's son.
Until a recent humbling experience during a 5-a-side game, I still harboured a quiet belief that I could play for United one day (almost 29 years old).

Thought Rafael would be the best RB in the world by now
Though Falcao would tear up the league with 30 goals in all competitions
Thought Ronaldo would be here by now

I don't tend to make too many predictions for United. Kinda just go with the flow.

But I remember predicting Falcao to score loads of goals here. I also predicted us to get a result at the Etihad last season, due to Moyes' good record there. I thought Lallana would have been more impressive for Liverpool. I'd have laughed, last summer, if somebody suggested we'd finish out of top four. Probably some others...

I'm sorry.
Reminds me of when I was young and I thought Arsenal were named after Wenger.

Micah Richards, Jack Rodwell, Jack Wilshere and Tom Cleverley would be four of England's most important players of the generation.

What is something you thought was gonna happen but it didn't happen at all?

For example:
  • When Nani and Anderson signed i thought they're gonna be important players at the club for ages
  • It's just matter of time until we sign Sneijder. "next window he is ours"
  • Fabio and Rafael are destined to become legendary fullbacks on each side of the pitch
  • Mourinho will succeed SAF
Your turn:)

(inspired by reddit)

Nani was important for quite a few years. Lumping him in with Anderson is harsh.

I think Jose would have had Ferguson not dropped one two years ago.

Micah Richards, Jack Rodwell, Jack Wilshere and Tom Cleverley would be four of England's most important players of the generation.
I definitely thought Rodwell would be a class player.

I thought Chelsea would be unstoppable when they signed Ballack and Shevchenko after winning their second title. We won the next three titles.

I thought Marc Albrighton would become a decent player for a side with European aspirations based on his performances for Villa in 2010-11. He's played 9 games for Leicester so far this season.
