If AWB is considered by many on here as a fantastic defender but not so great going forward, does anyone think there is any merit in converting him to a CB?

going from RW to RB to CB would be a hell of an achievement.
I'd say it's hardly rocket science. He excelled as an RB this season, he's an RB. The fact that he seems to have learned the position extremely quickly is cause for optimism for me, surely there's still untapped potential there. People prematurely dismiss his attacking play, but he might very well make strides there going forward. Still young, still learning.
No. No more converting. Sign specialists.
AWB isn't about to sign for United for 50 million quid because of impressive performances at RB only to be converted into a dodgy cb

Don't expect the italian journos to be that up to date on these kinds of deals. But warms the heart that everyone reliable has at least made positive comments on us chasing him. Feel like this one is going to happen.
All i'm hoping for is that the majority of Ole's transfer (the smaller/upgrade ones) can be done before the tour so we can get the guy building relationships quickly.

United fans, do you all support the club paying over £50M for a player that doesn’t play for the National team? Bearing in mind this will be the most expensive fullback in the entire world.
The fact he doesn't play for the national team isn't any fault of his though is it ? He absolutely should be there on merit and it is based that he hasn't been picked.

Yes. England have very good FBs and he has plenty of time to break into that team.
If we have better alternative then we should go for that player but not sure if we have any. Also if club thinks he is the player for us then why not.
That's where football is heading. Walker and TAA are good RB's to be fair as well.
Hard for him to play regularly as TAA is superb RB and playing for second best team in the league.

Thing is, he's considered "not great going forward" because someone said it first and the rest followed. Palace fans already said he has a lot to offer going forward, but he didn't to much of it because of their setup.
Why does any transfer price bother most people anyway? City has one of the most expensive back four, are anyone laughing at them now?

Look at the size of his legs. Dude looks like a mosquito. Whatever he does, it will look clumsy. Think about Henry, with all that skill, he still looked somewhat funny when running.
From what I've seen so far, I'd say he has got some dribbling on him. You'd think he has Lee Cattermole's skill by reading this thread.
Or you could just watch him yourself and see he isn't very good at it.

I am all for this transfer. Don't really care much about the price either as long as it goes toward a young player who would be happy to play here and who is better than our current options. Not being on the national team is not a negative in my view, probably the opposite. With Shaw, AWB and Dalot we'd have a good set of young fullbacks who could hopefully serve us for years to come.
His dribbling style is sort of like Zaha's. Sudden change in direction, chops and feints.
Did you support Carrick starting games for United?
AWB does throw himself about. Similar to TFM.
My worry is when he gets older, the cumulative effects will take its toll on his body.
He made 139 tackles last season and in the video probably 10-20 tackles are showed. It gives the impression he dives every time.
Well it depends on what aspect of "going forward" we are talking about. Shaw is a good ball carrier for example but his final ball is not good. There are some fullbacks who link well and make intelligent movement to help their wing partner and some who simply offer blistering overlaps.
Shaw's approach is good, it is clear though that we have a problem with delivery throughout the team. I have liked AWB since the first game I saw him play, but you really do have to consider context in terms of the makeup of our team and his potential team mates.
In fact if you go through our team there are small details in players that can make a difference to how they play. For example, de Gea's distribution is not that good, but if Fellaini (I know he is gone) is on the field he can hit it in a general area and his distribution is covered for. Mata playing on the right looks worse when he does not have someone playing number 10 next to him, or if he has to break from deep because he does not have pace. He will never relinquish possession in a RB area, but there is no chance he is running out of that position with the ball.

Yes. Don't care about him not playing for the national team as being one of the best RBs in the PL is far more important. Besides it's hardly as if playing for England is a huge reflection of quality.
As for him beofming the most expensive fullback, again, it's really not that important. The market is such that new records are being created nearly every summer. We have Young at RB and need improvement badly. CP are well positioned. The market is inflated. 50-60 is fine, all things considered.
Shame there is this myth that he doesn't offer much in the attack and it's hard to get rid of that.
He will break into the England and get caps for sure. He's too good not to with his very obvious skillset and talent.
I don't have any problem with overpaying for young players with big potential. It's a calculated risk that should be taken from time to time.
Exactly!! just by that vid his assist numbers should be higher if Palace had someone who could score on a regular basis asides the over reliance on Zaha to produce.
It's his legs that give that impression. The Guardian newspaper wrote a piece on him and described him having 'telescopic legs' that probably explains why he wins alot of tackles. He just seems to wrap his legs around his prey and suffocates them.

TAA plays for a full on attacking team, the other plays for a much more defensive team.
People need to take in equation that he plays for Crystal Palace, not Real, not Barcelona, not Liverpool but Palace. That means that, similarly to most of his team, he gets holed up in his own box for 80% of the time.
You can put a good ball in and still have it cleared by a defender. It’s clear TAA is much, much better at crossing. The gulf is big.
Plus when full backs or wingers from lower teams cross the ball they trying to hit one or two player with 3 or 4 defenders around them. The higher teams attack with more player so you might have 4-5 attackers in and around the box so more opportunities to pick someone out.
Trent's vision and passing in general is what makes him so special. Hes a big reason why they can get away with a relatively unimaginative midfield.
