Yet he keeps playing others who are constantly serving up shit whenever they play. At his best AWB has been unplayable for us. I can't say Dalot has reached those heights yet
Is being unplayable a good trait for a defender?

It is for any player on the pitch if we're on the same page about what the phrase means
Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that I ever saw that term used to describe defender's performance before. Unplayable is someone who is impossible to defend against, unbeatable is someone who is impossible to, well, beat or attack against, no? Wan-Bissaka never played at a level where he was unplayable (like, say, Alves/Marcelo/Trent), not even close. He's had games/streaks where he was unbeatable.

Sorry for being pedantic, it just irked me in a weird way, especially considering that he's literally unplayable at the moment. It may be my poor English.

Your English is perfect. I've seen that word used to describe defenders plenty, even by Brits but maybe the usage was wrong?

What do the others matter, there are only 2 viable options for RB so whether X name is playing shite it really has no bearing on Ralfs decision here. Every position has its own set of considerations.

AWB was appalling prior to Dalot getting his chance, that's why it happened. He seemed distracted, lacking concentration defensively, lacklustre in his effort, kept giving it away - and there has been nothing in Dalot's performances that have fallen into that territory which is why he's sticking with it. Either Dalot needs a shit run of form or AWB needs to majorly impress the manager.

Dalot has shown great application and a lot of promise. If he takes off the lead boots and occasionally plays a decent ball into the box he'll have cemented the RB position for the foreseeable future I think, but until that point AWB will always have a chance to win his place back. Hopefully he's getting his head down and is ready to take the chance when it comes.

AWB still has a lot of and more potential than Dalot imo, and so far still showed many more better games, in fact, was unplayable the whole season, before some dips started coming so I would definitely write him of especially for someone so young but it's good that we don't blindly prefer a player who cost us 50mil. and showing him to take his foot from the arse, to work harder. I hope this will be an endless motivation for one and another.

There should be competition for every spot and no favouritism. Let's hope RR or ETH or perhaps Pochettino can follow this. Giving younsgters a chance, buying cheap punts or straight upgrades.

Dalot just does most things ok, nothing flash about him though, but that's clearly more than enough to keep AWB out of the team to a manager who knows a good player from a bad one, so not sure there's anyway back for AWB, as I don't think he's the the sort of player who can put much pressure on player like Dalot if the maanger thinks he is better.

Good managers coach players, I think we all expected a bit more from RR in terms of improving the players.

How is a defender Unplayable?
Does that mean he is shite!

Not all players you can improve. By your logic, Klopp should have improved Nathan Clyne.

You tell me, you don't remember when he pocketed all the world class attackers including Sterling and Salah. Yeah defenders first ability on the skillsheet defending.

Fosu Mensah had Sane in his pocket when he was on fire in one game, Axel held Mbappe and Neymar at bay for one game!
Where are they now :wenger: :wenger:

Going further back, Phil Neville absolutely dominated Partick Vieira one game (that's no exaggeration) and he did well against him in another, and I remember Ashley Young's MOTM at fullback against Salah.

I do wonder if AWB can turn it around with a new coach. I hope he does because we're not seeing much of that 50 million back if not. His one on one defensive quality is excellent, it's just his positioning and suspect touch/attacking contribution that are the real doubts. Ralf clearly prefers Dalot at the moment.

I don't rate Dalot but I'm pretty confident AWB is done as a first choice starter here under Ralf or the next guy. You don't dramatically change your technical ability at 24.

Given that his contract has 2 years left we should really take what we can get for him this summer.

I suppose that is when we can say a player is great on his day..first word that comes to mind is Inconsistent.

I would love to know who scouted this guy and what they reported back to the club. A £50m right-back that has lost his place in the team because he is not good enough.

AWB and unplayable in the same sentence

I can only assume we mean unplayable as in he's too dire to ever get on the pitch.

Ever since the driving thing came out, it just clicked for me and I knew everything I was seeing on the pitch was an extension of the fact that this guy is a moron.

The misconception on here is he’s good at defending but he’s not he’s a good tackler his position does be awful

This is the only definition I've found. Is this incorrect or do most people only use it to describe certain types of players?

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/unplayable

"In some sports, if you describe a player as unplayable, you mean that they are playing extremely well and are difficult to beat. If you describe a ball as unplayable, you mean that it is difficult to hit.
[British]"

Some of you are a miserable bunch on here. If you don't like AWB and your wish of him not seeing any playing time has come true, what is the point of still talking about him negatively in his performance thread when he's not played in some time.

Probably a combination of Ole, Murtough and one or two others signed off on it. Murtoughs now our director of football...

I wonder if Palace would take him back for half the price, similar to with Zaha. Would be a good deal for us both as he's never going to be good enough in attack for us and Palace could use an upgrade on Ward and he'd fit their style of playing about 50 attackers at once as he's defensively excellent.

Fair enough,
Personally I would use the term for a surface that could not be played on but used on an individual could just be that the opponent was having an off day or various other things; I would use the term for the Messi's and Michael Jordan's of the world and not the AWB's

Sounds like when people wanted to see Shaw as a DM and Fred as a LB.
Take the player who has the worst touch in the squad, dribbles like drunkard, cant win a header for dear life, always positioned himself in nowhere land, always passes like shit and put him in the middle of the pitch where the most technical players are usually played and where it is most crowded it in the pitch. What could go wrong :wenger:

I really enjoyed him play but it's obvious he isn't good enough in an attacking way.

Was a personal enjoyment for me during our counter attacking year.

If he doesn't improve and is a Lukaku first touch at RB then he has to go. I still hope that he can improve under a technical possesion based manager but it's feeling delusional.

Because we spent £50m on him and our CEO boasted about the process behind scouting him from literally hundreds of other (better) options.

Even though he had none of the attributes a top team would look for in a full back.

That's not really a performance evaluation though.

That's more to do with our CEO.

I think it's obvious we signed him because he was English and we were doing that British core thing at the time

During the time English players made the best RB's.

There was like 5+ to choose from.

It wouldnt surprise me if we still went for another English RB like Lamptey or Livramento.

Not really a English core thing with regards to the RB.

There wasn't. When we got Awb, he was more established than Lamptey or Livramento. I recall the Caf mentioning foreign alternatives like Atal and Munier. I think Ducker or some reliable journalist also linked us with Hysaj.

We really got the shit end of the stick with him. England somehow produced multiple top RBs this generation and we really got stuck with the worst and most expensive of all of them. He was the chosen one too out of 800 RB  . He also used to play as a winger in youth setup somehow. The scouts who chose him should be fired immediately
