A Tribute to Roy Hodgson - his LFC legacy in quotes

I'd hope so too as long as it's not Hodgson. I don't think he was ever at that level. I said this back in July too:

It's pointless using that brief reign as proof though as he was given the reigns of a supposedly top 4 club in ridiculous circumstances that no other manager in that position has had to face going into a job of that magnitude. (Quite the opposite in fact when you consider the circumstances greeting the appointments of Mourinho, Wenger, Benitez and Houllier) Given that the pressure to succeed at somewhere like Liverpool never diminishes (regardless of the circumstances/available resources at the time), taking over in the circumstances he did was always going to be desperately unfair on him.

Using it as evidence for glib assertions such as 'he was never at that level' is just beyond misguided.

Most of you lot rated him and thought he was doing a good job given 'the mess left behind by Benitez'.

hmmm..

I remember most people arguing that he simply had not done badly enough to be kicked out of the job after less than half a season. You were never going to get relegated and you were never go to finish higher than sixth. That is still true.

I'd bet my bottom dollar that the majority of United fans don't want Mourinho anywhere near the club. So that's bollocks.

Maybe I should have said the majority of posters on here? I'm sure there was a huge amount of them on here that love him, although I've ignored the Mourinho rubbish for a year or so now.

so anywhere from 17th-6th = not sackworthy?

Ah, context. I agree, it is vitally important. If only Roy had appreciated the same.

Me thinks you're being a wee bit too serious about this. His performance were no laughing matter and the quicker they are forgotten the better.

His quotes are, now that he is gone, straight up entertainment.

The fiver knows the score:

We seem to have vastly different ideas on what constitutes entertainment.

Who reads the fiver these days?

lol. I concede the point.

Nobody as far as I can tell though said that he was doing a good job, simply that with him you were never going to be relegated. Benitez did leave him with a pile a shit, a pile of shit that Benitez himself could only drag up to 7th. You lot win a few games and it seems that your season has turned around and the shit smells like roses again. However, I will give you a bet that you'll still end up 7th or worse, and the shit will still stink of shit. What will you all do then, start turning on Dalglish?

I'll take that bet.

And yep, some of your lot definitely thought Hodgson was doing a decent job and any blame for Liverpool's position lay squarely at the feet of Benitez. It was rubbish then and even more so now given King Kenny has put it into some perspective..

So what of this bet? Sportsman's bet? Money? You name it.

The evidence is all there in the Roy Hodgson thread. A bunch of Utd fans making excuses for Roy and more saying how good a job he'd do.

How wrong they were. And how blatantly obvious it was.

To be fair though, the general consensus outside Utd fans is also that Hodgson was treated badly and given an unfair opportunity.

What's your point exactly? That all United fans want to see managers given a fair chance and not get prematurely sacked?

Nope. Utd fans are as impatient as any other set. Maybe more so than most given the expectations..

My point is Liverpool fans could see he wasn't up to managing Liverpool months ago. It never really dawned on some Utd fans at the time. And probably still doesn't.

On and off the field, Hodgson was found wanting.

You Scouse lads can dress it up all you want. Yes, Hodgson didn't set the world alight, and I wouldn't want him anywhere near United, but some of the blame for Liverpool's poor form lies with the players and the unprofessional approach of some of them adopted from the moment he walked into the club. Whether they were upset about Benitez leaving, or didn't think Hodgson was up to the job, it doesn't excuse the lack of effort some of them put in.

Addressed this already.

However true that is, it does not excuse Hodgson from being woefully inadequate in the job either. There's blame enough to go around.

Exactly.

And, B9, this thread and specifically your opening post if beyond cringeworthy. Completely embarrassing, I'd say.

Agree with Weaste, you don't finish above 7th.

The crap you played vs Fulham in your recent fluke win begs to differ.

United were god awful v Wolves, doesn't mean that's what you do week in week out.

Like it or not, it's clear Liverpool are playing better under Dalglish - they haven't conceded a goal for ages, and they've just gone to Stamford Bridge and won. You have to surely accept that Dalglish has been manager for a month, and he's managed to win more away games already that Hodgson did in six months.

You would have said the same last year!

Nar, last year the competition for the top six was greater. Sides like Villa and Everton have fallen away this year, and Sunderland look like they're set for a bit of a wobble. That combined with improved Liverpool form, they will surely get 6th, and maybe even 5th if one of Chelsea or Spurs have a massive disaster.

There is a thread somewhere with a poll attached for last year. I called 7th, they hit seventh. I look at the teams around them now, I call seventh again. Sunderland are a better team, Newcastle or Bolton might make it tight for them to get 7th.

We'll see won't we?

We will see - I don't think they're worse than Sunderland though, but you're well entitled to your view.

Best fans in the world, YAWN

The most amusing thing now is how they've annointed Dalglish as the greatest manager in the world so quickly. Reminds me of the way they came down on Roy so quickly.

I'll say the same thing about Dalglish as I did about Roy. Give it time. Give it a season. A four game run with a couple of lucky results doesn't mean much.

I'm actually thinking of calling your load of spackers for the title, but the way you keep totally bottling it, and the CL games coming up, I'm still in two minds. The price isn't great either.

 Never bet on us, it's gambling suicide. I fancy us a little bit to win it, but you never know what's going to happen. It's safer to stick it on United.

Woah yeah lucky Roy was here and bought Meireles otherwise Rafa and Dalglish would've had us in the relegation zone.

Come on, it is amusing. He was a shot manager, I've never claimed otherwise, but he still signed the player that has been the only goal threat for Liverpool for quite some time. Most of the rest look about as likely to score as the referee.

Which mustn't sit entirely well with Liverpool fans who want to put all the club's ills at Roy's door. It would be much easier to keep shovelling shit on Roy if one of Rafa's lovechildren like Kuyt or Maxi was banging them in.

"Yes we've scored! Ah, Meireles. Roy's signing. Again... ok, I'll blame Roy if we concede an equaliser instead."
