A serious look at Mauricio Pochettino

So just as I said, you admit being baffled as to why Spurs players keep signing long-term contracts, so it's hardly surprising that your predictions of "eventual" departures are not persuasive, especially when "eventually" could mean 2, 3 or 4 years down the line. And if all these players would leave if presented with a chance to do so, how come they signed new contracts?

I guess you are equally baffled as to why Pochettino signed a new, long-term contract, so likewise your "good chance" prediction stands on shaky ground.

As for Walker, that's been done to death already: Spurs had Trippier coming up through the ranks, got £50m, and so were OK with letting Walker go.

I kind of enjoy your long, pointless posts where you try to explain people what they are saying. You’ve been at your best recently.

There are many good coaches out there. Clubs like Barca, RM, Bayern hire and sack coaches all the time, and even Chelsea has been doing that. There are other great options out there beside Pochettino.

Who, Levy ? If Poch wants to join us, he can't say No. He doesn't have an option but to agree a compensation with us.

Not true. He could just place Pochettino on gardening leave for a year or two and leave United in limbo-land. But it won't come to that because Pochettino won't be keen on leaving.

Watford refused to negotiate for Silva. It can happen, they have the option. In theirt Pochettino can buy out his contract but it's not practical. He would need to pay the money himself. It's never been done before because it would be so messy.
Everything depends on Levy saying yes.

 gardening leave. If I want to quit, I quit - as simple as that.

Desperation causes clubs in dire straights to behave in desperate ways.

United are in a right old mess. They extend Mourninho's contract, then they sack him at huge expense because of said contract. They sign players by chucking huge wages at them, then can't get rid of the duffers because no other club will pay such wages for the players concerned. They start off talking big about title challenges and how much money they have to spend, but now they face a 4th time outside in the top 4 in the space of just six seasons.

That's disingenuous to say the least so you believe journalist saying that Pochettino is United's prime target as manager but out rightly reject the their claim that Pochettino might be interested to come here as well .

If Poch says he wants to go he will be allowed to leave. What kind of message are you sending to your squad keeping a manager who wants to leave? That would be unprecedented.

The gardening leave won't happen because Levy won't throw £40m away but he really can't just quit, especially if it's a ploy to move elsewhere.

Yeah, and how did that go? Dude was sacked. You can’t keep a manager that ain’t happy. It’s the most important football person at the club.

And then , what happened? Where is he now ?

Watford refused to let him go despite Silva wanting to go. Everton hired Allardyce. Two months later Silva was sacked for poor results.

That scenario if it played out with Poch would mean he'd be sacked two months into next season, by which we would have a different man in place.

No, it wouldn't be as "simple as that". Pochettino wouldn't have the option to join another club as long as his contract with Spurs remain in force.

Watford case was different because it was mid year and yet they were close but Everton pulled out and decided to wait until summer.

As I mentioned multiple times, all you need to tell Levy is I quit and want to explore other opportunities. No body keeps unhappy managers with them.

Correction, nobody keeps unhappy managers in charge of the team. Being in charge of a garden is something else.

I agree. I'm just saying there's a risk Levy can say no. It will now depend on Pochettino accepting it and moving on or things turning sour.
My point is Pochettino can be willing to move and still, that might not be enough.

The 1st time I read this thread and Wow! These Spurs fans are as delusional and annoying as Mourinho. I wonder what they've achieved or won to express such a level of arrogance. They've had a great spell the last 4 years (in their standards) but they still remain a mid table club and that's not ready to change soon. When you're beating your chest for being better than United when we're at our worst than something is wrong in your mind; United isn't a barometer of excellence right now but still able to unsettle their manager.

If Pochettino turns down United after he turned down Madrid, then something is wrong with his ambitions and I can say he's at the right place, at a club with no ambitions. Personnaly I'm not a great fan of him and would want someone else especially when we have to pay compensation to get him; his system depend too much on the form of Kane (I mean a great goal scorer) and despite having one of the best team he's won nothing; I think he's good enough to stabilize a club than to win trophies. Someone like Jardim is better than him and is my favorite.

Its not as simple as putting him in gardening leave either. If he wants to join us, he will join us.

Spurs contract part is also wrong unless you take a severance pay from Spurs. If I resign my post and take no severance, I am free to join any club I want . Ofcourse, the legal things could be different for each contracts but typically this is what happens in a manager contract .

The Spurs press officer is going to be famous come May

If the footballing gods are just and fair, they will make Poch to United happen just piss Glaston off.

It would be interesting to see come summer which set of supporters would end being embarrassed ,some Arrogant United fans who are certain Pochettino is coming to United or few deluled Spurs fans who have almost irrational belief that Pochettino is going nowhere or both with Pochettino moving to Madrid.

I don't know for sure whether Poch is United's prime target, but it seems credible that he would be. But it doesn't strike me as credible that Pochettino has indicated he wants to go there. After all, in the transfer windows the media is chock-a-block with "sure fire" stories about player X to club Y ... but most of these stories end up being proved wrong.

Personally, I think he will stay at Spurs and we will end up with either Zidane or Allegri.

Any of the above options are perfectly fine in my book, but I'd prefer Poch for obvious reasons.

That's true, I just hope people on here don't pretend that Poch was never the main target if it doesn't materialize.

Poch did not use an agent. He negotiated his contact with the club by himself, man to man style. Does that make him stupid? Or does that signal his happiness with the club and his role at the club?
Ok then, so I have the answer, he's happy where he is. No problem for me! He can stay.

What would be nice if he would kill the speculation straight away for the sake of the Spurs fans and also for our sake, so we don't waste time thinking we can get him. Him keeping things 'open' as it seems so far, is disrespectful to Spurs in the middle of your season, plus possibly wasting United's time. It's like he's passively watching things and will go along with whatever outcome.

Just want him to be clear. Don't want anyone here who isn't sure what they want to do. We haven't got time for that.

I also believe he is our prime target and there may be some encouragement from his side as well with a caveat that Spurs need to be respected and if a amicable deal could be worked out between United and Spurs great ,otherwise he is happy to continue his good work with Spurs.

Which one is most likely would you say?
I think he wants to stay to lead you guys into the new stadium. Sort of like a fulfilment of his project with you. As I mentioned below, he seems a passive character and won't rock the boat too much so I cannot see him being determined to leave if things get tense with Levy.

The cynical side of me thinks, he's loyal to no one, and if he gets the opportunity and we end up giving Levy lots of money, he would come to us. Sort of like, he'll see where things are going, but he won't be the one pushing.

He might prove me wrong, but that's what I take from what I've seen of his personality.

Are you trying to convince yourself with these repetitive grand statements? One is enough!

Simply not true. If a manager signs a 5 year contract they can't simply resign and join another club whenever they feel like it unless the contract says they can ... and it's highly unlikely that any manager's contract would contain such a clause, not least because no club wants a manager to be able to just up-sticks mid-season.

Simply saying you want to leave and will take no severance pay (in any case, severance would only be payable if the manager was sacked) does not end a contract.

Poch is a great option but he is not end of the world. There are so many exciting options available who is ready to make the step up. Be it Spurs or United, they just need to plan it accordingly and find a suitable manager.

In what way are we a 'mid table club'?

Harry Redknapp: "If Pochettino wants to stay at Tottenham, he’s got to come out and say ‘no, I’m staying here’. But at the moment he doesn’t seem to be saying that."

If it gets to the stage that we're negotiating release clauses then Poch is set on leaving and he's as good as gone.

A few Spurs fans seem to be so eager to point out how terrible Utd have been in the last few years, and in the context of the success Utd have had this may be true. But objectively, what team has done better since Pochettino joined Spurs? Does getting top 4 matter if you've no chance of actually winning the CL? Trophies vs. nothing, do you not think Pochettino will look at Utd and think 'If they can still win trophies whilst going through a shitstorm of chaos, imagine what I could do there'?

Until Spurs start splashing cash on transfers and wages, I don't see anything changing. This holy grail of a new super stadium certainly won't turn them into title winners, I don't remember Arsenal suddenly stepping up a gear after moving into The Emirates.

Simply saying you want to leave and will take no severance pay (does not end a contract.

When did I mention mid-season? As I mentioned earlier, you are free to believe whatever you want. You can mark my words and come back to me when I am wrong . If Poch wants to join us, he will join us. There is nothing Spurs or Levy can do about it. And if it happens, the buy out wouldn't be 48m as they say. Will be much closer to 20 m- 25m than 45 - 50.

Spurs aren’t going to put a well paid manager on any leave and hire another and pay them as well just to satisfy teenagers on the Internet. If Poch stays, it will be because he wants to stay.
