A serious look at Mauricio Pochettino

Tbh, I'd be happy with a slow burn of a season next year and realistically, I think that is what will happen. We have had 5.5 years of slow and reactive football, under LVG and Jose and that will take a long while to fix.

Look at Klopp at Pool, he showed glimpses of what he was building and it was only the turn of the year in 2018 (he joined in October 2015, for reference) where his ideas were properly embedded and Liverpool looked like they were going somewhere.

I don't think it'll take that long for Ole because we have more funds to play with and more freedom to operate in the transfer market compared to the Scousers but a season to 18 months worth of bedding in for Ole will probably put us on the right path in the long term, much more than what the quick fix of Top 4 this season would do, IMO.

If we can get Top 4 and the EL, while going as far as possible in the cups next season, while Ole properly beds in his tactical set up and gets much more chemistry out of the players, that would be a fantastic season for me.

It's a totally different league now, and Conte is the perfect example of the flash in the pan, quick fix who got a trophy and then completely lost it. We need to give Ole the time to properly bed in to the club, because the jump from Molde to Utd is a massive one.

Also he didn't have European football distractions. Only reason they manages to stay consistent IMO.

Dealing with injuries to key personnel is something all football clubs have to contend with, especially the bigger clubs who are challenging on multiple fronts, that's why they invest in adequate squad replacements.

Spurs wouldn't be in this position had Levy opened the purse strings and made the necessary purchases last summer. This is all on him.
 
Probably need tobeat Everton to get C.L next year. I really believe this is the end of this Spurs-team. Best defenders are past 30. Alli has not reached the level of a few years back. Eriksen might leave and if that
happens, how long will Kane stay? I would be worried if I was a Spurs- fan

I find this obsession with points totals to be quite strange.

Only one team can win the league. What difference does it make how many points you accumulate if you finish second?

Agree with this they should have invested last Summer but then the notion of him elevating average players also comes under scrutiny may be he isn't a miracle worker that some here believe him to be but just a good manager who gets best out of some very talented players but he also needs good players to work with to begin with.

Poch did have like 11 or 12 points head start over Ole when he took over in December. If both had been in the job for full season, I think Ole would be above him (considering he would not have been expected to be worse than Jose was for the first 17 games and we could be just 2 points behind Spurs tomorrow).

Also, been there several years with his own players and methods implemented. Other one, barely several months, with neither yet.

Poch is a fantastic manager, in my opinion, I don't buy the 'overrated' stuff for a second that many on here label him with.

You're right, though. You can be the greatest football manager that ever lived, but there is only so far you can help elevate an average footballer. He needs to be properly backed in the transfer market if he is to take this Spurs side any further.

I'd like to see how he gets on at a bigger club, one that is capable of meeting his needs like Real, Barca, Juve or clubs of similar financial might.

For what it's worth, Poch has done a great job this season considering the lack of investment, injuries and the form of key players.

Not sure why you're saying this? Conte didn't end second with 93 points, he won the title with 93 points.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't explain that very well at all :lol:

I wasn't talking about Conte or your post to be honest, I was referring to the Liverpool fans who keep harping on about reaching 97 and finishing second. Perhaps I should have said that.

Firstly, Poch has some credit built up. Secondly, I have questioned both managers. The Spurs squad is thin and the board are not helping Poch. Beyond that he is in a CL semi anyway.

This is a bit of a myth, Poch runs a lean squad because he chooses to, the money was there in the summer for transfers, not £100+ superstars, but enough funds to bolster their numbers with decent players in key positions.

He chose not to do that, so any talk of small squad size, injuries, fighting on all fronts, fatigue etc, all on him.
 
To be fair it's not like we have had an injury free season. Half of our squad is injury prone whilst the players like Rashford, Martial & others have even been playing with injuries.

Poch again today seemed to pump his players up to the max and pushed then too far, we've seen this before against Chelsea, they lose their heads way to easily, lack of composure under pressure.
But I suppose that's on the players rather than the gaffer?!

Yes that means he did better than him since he got the job. Your point was if Ole started the season as our manager, we would be higher than them, which is pure assumption. Both are different points.
