A serious discussion regarding the events in Cuba

What part of NC? Just please don't keep driving housing prices up until after I buy one. Thanks.

SC still hasn't recovered from General Sherman's glorious procession north.

chapel hill area, likely in the country to the west. Not for 11-12 months though.
Mississippi begs to differ.

Jackson is hands down the worst city I have ever been too

there are some rural areas of MS I drove through that are shocking, but I have no doubt you are right.

I believe you but I think people who have never lived In a truly "poor" country just have no frame of reference when talking about crappy states within u.s.

I agree completely. The drop from even Oxford MS to rural towns outside us so jarring it it tough to fathom a further drop with a frame of reference

You're west of chapel hill? Eat that maple view ice cream!

In Hillsborough? If so that town is on our list of options.

Yeah it's a nice town and area. All the areas around chapel hill are great really.

I expect to see you at NCFC games once you're here then ;)

Nice.

Just don't cross over into Alamance County. That place, while technologically and economically relatively modern, is culturally in the 50s/60s.

Haha alamance county. I believe that's where the JR cigar shop I go to is. They have a lounge where I used to enjoy cigars. The clientele were 50-70 year old MAGA boys.

Most sane people would be infuriated by it but to me I'd just sit there and listen to their conversations on a pure scientific/social experiment observation level. How this guy in a crappy pickup torn jeans and barely any money is losing breath over defending the hard earned money of a billionaire.

Their cigar selection is great though and the actual folks who run the shop are nice.

A 50th ranked state is probably far far ahead than a developing nation. Plus you have Charleston :)
Which has North Charleston. Which would make that pic you posted look like the safest place to be within 5 miles.

Point being… the “capitalist paradise” of the US has places that are very underdeveloped. You just have to get out of the touristy areas to see them. (Sound familiar)

The whole capitalist paradise thing I posted was half joking but I assure you even the worst place in the U.S is miles ahead of the worst place in most other countries of the world barring some tiny Euro nations and gulf nations.

Compare underdeveloped areas of America to eastern bloc or Russian underdeveloped areas and "safety" will have a different meaning

I dare you to take a walk around some parts of Brooklyn or the Bronx after sunset.

Competing (and yes, as you can see I included my post in this) over whose state has the shitiest shit part of shit town is the most American thing ever and brings a tear to my eye.... that might also be due to memories of the rancid stench the emanates in waves from Bourbon street in the summer.

“During the biggest anti-government protests on the island of Cuba in decades, protesters have been chanting words from a hip-hop song released earlier this year, calling for the end to Cuba's decades-long communist and authoritarian regime.

Demonstrators are heard echoing the words to "Patria y Vida" ("Homeland and Life"). The music video, with more than six million views on YouTube, is a collaboration of six Cuban musicians — two who live on the island, and the others in Miami.

The song's lyrics have become an anthem for the demonstrations:
No más mentiras
Mi pueblo pide libertad, no más doctrinas
Ya no gritemos patria o muerte sino patria y vida
Y empezar a construir lo que soñamos
Lo que destruyeron con sus manos
Que no siga corriendo la sangre
Por querer pensar diferente
¿Quién le dijo que Cuba es de ustedes?

No more lies!
My people demand freedom. No more doctrines!
Let's no longer shout "Homeland or Death" but "Homeland and Life."
And start building what we dreamed of
What they destroyed with their hands.
Stop the blood from running
For daring to think differently
Who told you that Cuba belong to you?

That is pretty awesome.

It is also depressing that with the changing of one word it would apply here as well.

All the party boys and girls from my college moved to Brooklyn and not fancy areas either. I think it's been a while Brooklyn has been pretty sanitized. I actually have walked at Brooklyn after sunset many times but I'll admit it was with my friends and they probably knew the same areas.

One of these walks was towards Peter Lugers     That steak!

But seriously even Bronx, I know some immigrants who live there (haven't talked to them since 2012) and yeah they mentioned some stuff to me but these folks immigrated from Karachi, Pakistan if I'm not wrong. When I talk about how "secure" a place is my reference point is the whole world not just developed countries.

EDIT: Now southside of chicago -- my uncle who has lived there for 30 years now has some horror stories. This is a guy who was stuck in Iran during the revolution fearing for his life...

Fox News’ take on this is to be expected. “AOC parroting BLM”… as if it’s impossible to have an original thought about why the embargo should be ended.

I never even click on a fox news article nor share it. I think the provocative articles are there to achieve just that -- clicks. Even when my friends send them or anything I just ignore it like it doesn't even exist. Not like it can be countered, rather let it remain an echo chamber.

It shouldn't be happening here. We have the resources to fix it but those in power always make promises they don't keep. They won't get anything out if so people are left to live in squalor. I wouldn't even call it live. They're just existing.
Oh Brooklyn's not that bad anymore :D

It's all vegan soy latte shops now
That's even worst
They're living in their little bubbles that's surrounded by chaos

Mississippi begs to differ, along with West Virginia. While largely true, there are parts of numerous states, particularly in Appalachia and the Deep South, that are decades behind the rest of the US. Out West, you could say the same about Indian Reservations.

I had to stop for gas in Indiana once. It was like I'd stepped into an episode of The Walking Dead. Never again, I'll fill up in Kalamazoo instead.

Cuba is a beautiful country and it's people are absolutely wonderful. I've been there several times and am very fond of the place. What the US has done to the Cuban people has been nothing short of disgusting and there is absolutely no reason for it to still be a 'thing' in 2021.

Of course there is a "reason". I don't think he covers Cuba, but the premise of the book still holds absolutely true.

Won't be a pretty sight if federal funds are cut and instead a trade embargo is imposed for half a century.

One of my friends went to visit his girlfriend-at-the-time's hometown deep in the NC mountains. No cell service, very few stores or anything within miles. His girlfriend was white, and he's Black. There might have been two other Black people within 15 miles. Not a chance in hell I'd have gone if I were him.

My sister-in-law had to go to a wedding in the same town, well outside town on the top of a mountain where she had to wear boots in the wedding and ride an ATV up to get there. Her description of it was reminiscent of Deliverance.

Some parts of rural America would be unbelievable to most Americans. Former Caf member vivs did a med school rotation on a reservation and talked about how depressing it was. In my home county, there is an area where a decent number of Native Americans lived in homes without indoor plumbing until recently, if not still.

 holy shit that's brave!

 seems about right.

We have that, too. :(

Seen that movie, did he get out?

And this is why Cuba matters in US politics, and why the embargo will never be removed as long as Floridian votes are to be gained.

If not for the embargo i believe cuba would have been ally of usa by now.

fecking cold war ended decades ago.

Forget about the embargo. Castro went to the US for help first after he over threw the Batista regime. Because Batista was a US backed dictator they turned Castro down. Only then did he ask for Soviet help.
There is no point in keeping any embargo now. Castro is dead and the USSR has been dead for a while.
