A serious discussion regarding the events in Cuba

Ah, I just witnessed a good ol' dose of commie-hating embargo advocates on Reddit. The essence of their argument is: feck the Cuban government, we must keep the embargo. Oh the Cuban population also suffers? Meh.

Of course they do. The same way post-apartheid emigrants from SA really care about the populace left behind. Wink.
:wenger:

OK, but all they care about is revenge on the regime at whatever cost - shouldn't they be interested in lifting the embargo, as it's likely going to undermine the regime better for all the reasons mentioned on the previous page? Or is that too complex and doesn't quite the tickle the revenge nerve the same way?

Single issue voters in a swing state are too tempting to pass up on.

Besides whatever attitude the president takes towards normalizing relations or anything else directly under their purview, there's also the issue that the embargo is codified in law so you'd need to pass their repeal in Congress. Not the most trivial task.

This is a tempting thought but if politicians fear losing Florida because of angry Cuban-American voters they're not gonna lift it.

Then again, I don't know how salient this issue is with Cuban-Americans though. Would they be upset if the embargo is lifted? Has there been done polling or surveys?

My guess is that there's an ego component at play here. The first wave of Cuba refugees and their descendants were humiliated as they were kicked off the island. They dont just want for things in Cuba to be better. Matter of fact, they would reject that if that kept the regime in power. They wanted to see Castro burn. They want to see the regime burn. If more ordinary Cubans have to die, then feck it then.

Hence the Che shirt

I think attitudes are very slowly changing with younger Cuban Americans, but it won't really be reflected for another cycle or two.

Urgh.

Thanks for explaining though, this was a real head-scratcher to me.

They're a big voting block in Florida and care a lot about the US policy towards Cuba.

Agreed.

Cuban-Americans were split back in 2014 when Obama started a move to normalize relations with Cuba

A split wouldn't be enough, there would have to be a clear majority in favor of lifting the embargo, in order for a Democratic president to push for it.

Florida is never voting dem again, might as well just do it.

Not quite sure about this. At the rate DeSantis is killing off his base it might happen.....

Seriously though, as with Texas I do think FL will, gerrymandering and civil war aside, eventually slide to the left.

If not for the embargo i believe cuba would have been ally of usa by now.

fecking cold war ended decades ago.

FL is nothing like TX. One attracts old white retirees from the Midwest, the others young professionals and students to growing urban hubs.

American chauvinism and thuggery seems boundless. Of course everything in Cuba may not be perfect. Excuse my ignorance and impressions from afar. I am dimly aware of a colourful, painful and tangled history, only in glimpses from novels and movies. I am sad to hear of suffering.

My hope is to visit one day. Cuba evokes so many images. I read everything I could in my youth. The wild years. The revolution. Che. Bay of Pigs. Fidel. People I know who visited came back with many warm feelings for the people there. My wish is for healing and that the Biden administration pursue the less aggressive path of Obama.

two paths to the same goal. If you look at some of the resolutions that pass in FL (ie min wage) there is an appetite for progressive policies. FL will always be a purple state, so fine margin changes will make huge differences.

Moving again? Well, at least Florida will be closer for that Che tour.
Yeah. Moved to Alabama with Snow (plus Madison and Milwaukee) for work, but both our jobs have been reclassified as remote. No point in living isolated from family anymore so we are headed back south.

edit: may need a username change to “The Other Carolina Red”

NC_Red, duh. Or wait, are you trying to be a backup mod?

Anyways that sounds really nice. Same for us with our jobs, but we really like it here so we're staying anyway.

Progressive policies which aren’t consciously associated with Democratic brand.

Demographic is not destiny, but at the end of the day it’s a ‘purple’ state that have consistently voted in GOP candidates over the last 2 cycles/4 major elections. With the influx of the retiree population plus the radicalization of the WWC votes + GOP‘s superior Latino outreach campaign there, they would have a red edge for the foreseeable future.

Marxist utopia of cuba

i am 100% sure there are areas in cuba that look worse than this. with my own eyes i can say, there are for sure areas in every country that look worse. really strange photo with which to make a point.

I’ve seen worse streets than that one @shamans posted in the city I live in

@berbatrick , @Carolina Red - my post was replied to with a silly gif so I posted "enjoy Cuba then" as a silly response to show I too can resort to boring sweeping statements, so it wasn't meant seriously.

That said I don't think I need to convince anyone the difference between living in south Carolina and an underdeveloped nation!

Uh, bud… South Carolina would be an underdeveloped nation if it was independent.

Ex) we are (nationally) 47th in property crime, 41st in violent crime, 47th in median credit score, 47th in median debt outside of mortgage, 42nd in foreclosure rate, 43rd in rate of 2 parent households, 41st in median income, 39th in poverty rate, 38th in families on food assistance, 45th in daycare services, 40th in public education, and are overall ranked 42nd in “best state to raise a family in”.

this might be the nicest thing anyone has ever said about South Carolina. New chamber of commerce slogan?

He should try that line with folks in our I-95 “corridor of shame”, the Alphabet streets of Anderson, or Una/Startex/Arcadia (lower USA) in Spartanburg.

I felt so sad whenever we took the 85 business bypass through Spartanburg on our way to NC from Bama. Also angry that over 3 years we made the drive that portion of the regular 85 STILL wasn’t completed.

What part of NC? Just please don't keep driving housing prices up until after I buy one. Thanks.

SC still hasn't recovered from General Sherman's glorious procession north.

A 50th ranked state is probably far far ahead than a developing nation. Plus you have Charleston :)

Mississippi begs to differ, along with West Virginia. While largely true, there are parts of numerous states, particularly in Appalachia and the Deep South, that are decades behind the rest of the US. Out West, you could say the same about Indian Reservations.
