70s Retro Football Fantasy Championship - DRAFT THREAD

:( He was my preferred choice. Him and Zanetti  one of the best national sides I've seen: Bielsa's Argentina, they just peaked during the WC qualifiers, then Veron had a rubbish season with us, others started getting on... Unfortunate.

He was very unlucky with injuries I recall, he was one of the stand out players in the 2006 world cup for me.

I reckon Baraja was one of the best midfielders in Europe in his prime. I'm not sure you could say the same for Guti, talented and technical player that he was. And I rate how well he's adapted to different regimes at the Bernabeu, reinventing himself in a range of different positions.

Thought you might have snapped him up, especially alongside Forlan and Montero. He was my first choice for the substitute slot.

I had him as a possible substitute on the grounds he would be an impressive name on the teamsheet but it was very obvious Brwned would get him, fits his trident nicely.

I don't mind at all though, couldn't stand him as a player, blew hot and cold, disappeared from games...

Some are called "lazy genius", in his case it was more a case of "indifferent genius". He didn't really give a flying feck and that's not the sort of player I like (my picks probably have made that abundantly clear!).

Had to put up with him being our only hope in the national team for too many years and only ever raised his game in about three games... Not the stuff my fantasies are made of.

Gotta go for a goalkeeper now or they'll all be gone.

I'm going for Dida. The first goalkeeper voted the goalkeeper of the year by FIFpro (now merged with Ballon d'Or) and the only one not called Buffon or Casillas. He's also the last player left to be picked to have gotten any recognition by his piers so I consider him a very good choice as a goalkeeper.

Not many right backs left. Phil gotta be the best one. I always liked him and he's had a very good career. I also just learned that he's a twin.

Everton captain, Phil Neville

Errr I beg to differ when you get the likes of Baraja, Simeone and Petit as 4th picks

Guti is not a midfielder in the same field as them though, so you got to put it into perspective.

I kinda expected Guti to go earlier, but there are a big amount of great attacking midfielders in this draft so it's not that big a suprised he lasted long.

Guti is a luxury player in midfield. A great team will always have better AMs and DMs, he is neither here nor there.

Not a bad player, but several managers made the exact same call throughout his career. Nice to have... squad player.

Fits very nicely in that specific midfield, mind.

I know, and a great character... I followed him from his earliest days.

Suddenly this whole transfer window malarkey sounds a lot more attractive, but I have a distinct feeling you would fleece me

Oh well, I'll have to take you down then ;) :p

Both good picks, Snow. Had them on my shortlist for those two positions

Yea, pretty happy with my picks overall. Surprised I managed a good balanced squad like that with a very good midfield. It's at least a better performance from me than last draft and if I don't get voted one win in this competition then everyone in the world sucks:)

The best goalkeeper in the premier league, circa 2002 - 2004

I give you Carlo Cudicini.

I was mulling over both him and Ziege for left-back. Sorin was advantageous because I already had 4 Argentines, but went for Ziege due to his impressive displays at Euro '96 and his performances for Bayern around that time.

Sorin probably didn't fulfill his potential, but was nevertheless a swashbuckling and committed wing-back and one of the most promising of his generation.

Once again on the behalf of Brwned: Rüştü Reçber.

You also wanted as many good set pieces takers as possible:drool:

From what bargain bin does Brwned get his goalkeepers? Last time round Baia and this time Recber? Why not get Taibi on a unicycle?

Baia had one great season as was voted the best goalkeeper in the CL that time when Porto won it.

Rustu was very good before Barcelona.

"After spending nine seasons with Turkish football team Fenerbahçe, Rüştü was available on free transfer. Offers came from AC Milan, Barcelona, Internazionale, Valencia, Manchester United, Arsenal, Juventus, and Liverpool. Rüştü was very close to signing for Arsenal, but he had a dispute with manager Arsène Wenger and the transfer was cancelled; instead, he was transferred to La Liga giants Barcelona"

I understand (but not agree with) his motivation. What I don't understand is how no one else got him.

Yeah, OK, money as well, the Russian could afford to just stop others from having him...

Hmm weird 3 keepers going considering theres still 2 better ones in there -_-

EDIT - Peruzzi been taken, so 1. Nutcase, but still better than the 3 taken recently.

There are some good ones left though I wanted one who played in the premier league and I saw alot of first hand as opposed to someone on the continent you would see in the odd champions league teamsheet.

Don't think so. I've got every goalkeeper available on my list and at their peak no one did better over the course of a season than Dida.

I know how Dida was at the end of his Milan career but that's irrelevant.

I'll always remember Dida for his dive against Celtic, so you got my vote just for comedic relief.

I knew you of all people wouldn't forget him. How he ended up bench-warming for years is beyond me.:wenger:

Why leave Chelsea in their peak years? What made it very unfortunate for him is that whenever Cech got ruled out he always seemed to be injured at the same time thus leaving the door open for Hilario.

The most ridiculous example of that is the match at Reading in which Hunt kicked Cech's head was also the match where Sonko smashing into Cudicini caused him to swallow his tongue and require oxygen on the pitch.

Which meant Hilario had to play the next few games, and what was the next game you ask? It was away at Barcelona.

I'll take it anyway I get it. Jeg snakker også Dansk. Kan jeg måske også får dit stemme fordi jeg snakker det samme sprog som du gør?

Du er Dansk ikke?

As a goalkeeper over the course of his peak(not just one season), Dida is about 10th best in this for me, maybe even lower, far too erratic throughout his time at Milan and Brazil. If you are going by such a short time span to judge their peak, than you have another even better keeper left also.

The peak can't be much more than 2-3 seasons. Otherwise players like Guti are better than Aimar.

10th best keeper? Really? Guy who won CL and the WC with years apart as 1st choice. He used to be good you know before he got hit on the head or something that made him forget how to catch a ball in his latter Milan years.
