70s Retro Football Fantasy Championship - DRAFT THREAD

Also very sad to see your news, antohan. I hope you're hanging in there mate. My thoughts are with you.

Thanks mate. She was 97, had survived my grandad and two uncles of mine, spent the last 8 years flat on her bed... One of those cases where you think it is for the better. It was my mum I was more concerned about but she is coping well.

Though nobody would have been planning for that.

Precisely, so the moment you change the rules those picking immediately after it can assimilate it and change their plans accordingly. Those who have a long time to pick again find their plan is fecked and there's bugger all they can do.

It's fundamentally unfair.

We have to pick a squad of 12 players, right?

I did consider Di Natale but thought Milito was a better option - in fact there is another forward who is yet to be picked who I also had above Di Natale

I think I know who you are talking about but Di Natale is more versatile and similar quality.

Milito was only ever prolific under Mourinho, for the rest of his career he was so so.

And I know the other player you are referring to, it is almost tempting to get him just because he is still floating around though I won't.

I agree - the original plan was for a squad of 12 players and I would be against changing that.

You don't introduce it immediately, once the twelve rounds are done you have one last round where you pick two players or you have a complete free-for-all, first come first served round for two players each.

Not that I am massively in favour, just that it could work fine.

There are actually a few top strikers still available - I doubt we are all thinking about the same player TBH. The one I had in mind retired several years ago and is probably not that well known by many fans today which is why I didnt go for him.

That's not true. Milito has always been prolific in Europe. He spent two years at Genoa and was quiet but still scored a goal every other game. Left to join his brother in Zaragoza where he was really good. It was a poor team with a few good players like the Milito brothers. I remember him thinking Genoa got him at a bargain when they bought him back. Perhaps they had some kind of deal with them but in Spain he scored 53 league goals in 108 games. Only Ruud scored more goals one season than him.

It wasn't until Inter that he started playing for real in Europe and there his goal scoring finally got showcased. But he's always been prolific.

Not true in the slightest, just look at his goals/game ratio:
Diego Milito - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

However you are right that his best seasons were under Jose - he was voted POTY in Serie A in 2010 and since this is about players at their peak, that is good enough for me!

Well it depends how you define prolific which for a striker I would say has to be a 1 in 2 strike rate and 25 goals a season which in his career has occurred twice.

He's been a 1 in 2 striker for most of his career so it is a bit silly to claim he was 'so so' apart from his time under Jose.
e.g. he scored 26 goals in 34 matches for Genoa before even going to Inter - several other seasons where he got 20+ goals as well

I did suggest earlier that we could have a transfer window after picking the XI and one last round (one sub) after.

That allows people to trade 2 for 1 if needed and also to trade different positions (e.g. you replace the RB traded out picking a RB in the sub round).

Then some will end up with 2 subs, others with none and others just happy with their teams and one sub.

I think that is reasonable. Some could end up with even more than 2 subs if they turn on their Harry Redknapp mode but it would likely result in a Rafa team where quality has been traded for quantities. All in all you would get a reflection of good drafting + transfer activity which sounds fine.

BUT we are exchanging views on this as we go along and not everyone is online/aware/necessarily in agreement. So you still get the issue that the rules can't change as we go along as whoever has picked right before the change is treated unfairly.

I would let the First XI be picked first and once we are done with that we put the proposal up for a vote. That way we minimise any impact on the draft as laid out initially.

I say scoring 1 in 2 is definitely prolific. Especially if you're playing the majority of the games for an underdog team.

Who is prolific if not him? Milito is more prolific than Drogba and Hasselbaink and if you only count his record in Europe it's better than 1 in 2.

I think the turn off is due to him being rubbish over the last couple of years

That's silly logic though. Mendieta was one of the first picks here. Veron is still playing. When was he last brilliant.
I think he just didn't know that much about him pre-Inter. Not surprising since he hasn't been involved in internationals or European football before that. Doesn't make him any worse before he joined Inter.

Don't think he was still any better than Di Natale at his peak which is where the original argument begin.

Christ, this really got slow... :boring:

I'll be online regularly for the next 6-7 hours and happy to post picks for anyone coming after Crustanoid (I will treat two or more picks as first choice + subs not to be picked thereafter, unless otherwise specified).

I pick Barcelona's answer to Denis Irwin, a mainstay throughout the nineties in the left back slot: Sergi Barjuán (I'm surprised he's lasted till now tbh)

Has Di Natele been awarded the best forward in Europe or the best player in the Serie A?

Diego Milito's peak > Di Natale's peak

Was never a huge fan of the latter - perhaps style more than anything - but the former has won the lot, scored in the CL final, man of the match and named player of the year.

One of my heroes

I even got his autograph one evening in a posh restaurant. He was sat there next to me, and went as far as to put the equivalent of "Kind regards" in French

Cant believe Guti took so long to be picked?? :wenger:

Precisely, so the moment you change the rules those picking immediately after it can assimilate it and change their plans accordingly. Those who have a long time to pick again find their plan is fecked and there's bugger all they can do.

It's fundamentally unfair.

Yeah I'm not overly fussed about it, but changing the rules during the competition isn't the best idea - as Brian said last time around:

I picked players knowing that if I got through the group stages I would get two more and so forth, I'd be annoyed if it changed because people didn't read the rules through.

:( He was my preferred choice. Him and Zanetti  one of the best national sides I've seen: Bielsa's Argentina, they just peaked during the WC qualifiers, then Veron had a rubbish season with us, others started getting on... Unfortunate.
