70s Retro Football Fantasy Championship - DRAFT THREAD

Really thought Montero would go sooner. Good player.

Same, better player than Kuffour from what I can remember and as a pure defender better than Marquez too, although they're all in and around the same level along with the likes of Samuel, Helguera, Gallas and co. and there's a decent amount of other centre backs at that level still knocking about...a couple of whom were Montero's team-mates. Juan and Marchena I think were a level below.

Turning my attention to defence, surprised Montero was still available but there's another two on the centre-half shortlist who were comparably good.

Julio Cesar in nets

I was surprised you risked him. I was VERY close to picking him, the rationale being primarily that he was the last keeper who wouldn't require an upgrade in latter stages and -let's face it- it would be a waste to raid another team for a keeper and end up with one as a sub.

But then, I needed and wanted both Montero and Forlan, and will leave post-group stage considerations until it is a done deal!

Yea I don't think he would have lasted the next 30 it whatever picks so had to get him now. There's another keeper who I thought about who has won near enough everything but I rate cesar higher

I know who you are talking about and yes, you are right.

Agree, there actually are a good number of decent CBs out there.

The issue here was I needed to secure leadership, organisational skills and a no nonsense defender with excellent heading (Vidic-type CB) at the back. There aren't too many of those left. I also prefer my CBs to be proficient fullbacks if possible, that was the logic behind Kuffour being his partner.

Of course there's also the fantasy element, I was at the Centenario stadium the day he made his debut for Peñarol under Menotti. Early in the game he is chasing a ball, facing his own goal and he does a Ronaldo type turn sending the ball one way, turning the other and making the rival striker look stupid. The display of skill and composure under pressure earned him a massive ovation, as the whole stadium realised he was special.

Serie A knocked that sort of risky nonsense off him though and he earned a reputation as a hardman, although he was much more than that. Good profiling from Tim Vickery here:

BBC SPORT | Football | World Football | Montero the key for Uruguay

Lots of players I actually want here and the game is starting to get crucial..

Not many of these characters left, hence my next pick will be...

Massimo Ambrosini

Nice pick, he didn't quite fit what I needed and opted for Simeone instead but I was keeping tabs on him, better than many which went in the last round TBH.

Rubbish clip though, spends most of it lying on the pitch

So many keepers picked but not our own...

Edwin Van der Sar.

A lot of very good keepers still available.

I am in no hurry for a keeper.

I'm off to training in a bit. Can I PM my pick to anyone while Cal? mulls over his new VDS?

I think you can pm someone or maybe Cal? is himself to be blamed for making a wrong choice so making a pick wouldnt be unfair imo.

Montero would be brilliant if you were playing as Uruguay. Man was a bit rash and one hell of a nutter.
Red card master in Italy.

Yet Juventus persisted on playing him for a decade when they could easily replace him if he had nothing else to add. Vieira was under fire once for his red cards, so was Keano, did their clubs drop them? Hell no.

I refer you to the Vickery column, good article, he was superb beyond the physical aspects of the game.

Oh he was very good, don't get me wrong, but he was unpredictable with his discipline.

Carlos Gamarra

gamarra.jpg

Paraguayan captain, record cap-holder and named in FIFA's all-star team for the 1998 World Cup. Such a smooth operator he didn't concede a single foul in the 1998, 2002 or 2006 tournaments.

Great player, not much pace on him though (which made no difference as Paraguay sit back and play on the counter). You'd better make sure he has a faster partner.

He'll fit in well with Zidane and Simeone then.

Simeone had a better goalscoring record than any of the midfielders who contribute as much defensively. He even had a better goalscoring record than many of the more obviously attacking midfielders.

1 in 5 at his peak, 1 in 6 throughout his career. Not too shabby for a player so easily dismissed as "a thug".

Gamarra is the first pick that I have never heard of

His lack of pace was compensated with excellent positioning. It worked for Paraguay's style and in less dynamic leagues but every time a European club (Atlético, Inter) went for him he didn't work out and would be back in Brazil the next year.

Good player. Paraguay let in very little with him in the side. I believe two each in '98 (which includes Blanc's golden goal) and 2006. Never brilliant offensively though, Paraguay, hence they went out of our group in the latter year.

Never watched Gamarra at club level, but good at the WC's. Nice choice, I wonder if its too obscure for some voters though.

I agree. Still hate him.

This time around I'm going for players I personally rated rather than some of the more well-known ones, whereas in the '60s tournament I chose Couto rather than Kuznetsov based on reputation rather than ability.
