Benzema On Ronaldo, Barcelona, And Transfers
Lyon striker Karim Benzema reflected on AC Milan veteran Ronaldo's recent injury woes, concluding that it may partially be down to a lack of protection from referees over the years. Later, he discussed a possible move to Barcelona...
The young striker paid tribute to Ronaldo, stating that he was extremely disappointed to hear of the Brazilian's injury.
Ronaldo
"His injury was a great pity," he told Sport.es.
"He has always been my idol and my mentor. His career is over.
"He's had plenty of injury problems, but I always thought that he'd recover to be like before - the best in the world.
"This injury is a shame because it's more serious than the previous ones.
"Perhaps he's paying for taking beatings throughout his career, and for the insecurity given to us forwards by referees."
Describing his memories of Ronaldo, he said, "I discovered him when he was at Barcelona.
"I started to play football around the time he arrived from PSV - that's when I saw him.
"I was impressed by his power, quality and goals. If you remember the goal he scored against Compostela, that was impressive.
"I also loved his work with Inter Milan, but it was with Barcelona that I first saw him."
Barcelona
He continued, "I'm a fan of Ronaldo, but Barcelona is a club that I've always enjoyed.
"They've always had great forwards, like Stoichkov and Romario.
"Have I ever been to Camp Nou? Only to play for Lyon in the Champions League. I love that place. It's a good stadium in which to play football.
"The team play well, move the ball quickly - there's lots of speed. There are lots of great players and scope to score goals.
"I love watching Ronaldinho, and [Eric] Abidal is a friend of mine. I'm in touch with him and he speaks very highly of the club - a good team with good fans, he said."
Possible Move?
The Sport.es interviewers were clearly building up to the big question: would Benzema move to Barcelona at the end of the season, or even somewhere else?
"I have a contract until 2012," warned Benzema.
"I renewed it only last June. In future I'll have more time to think of other clubs.
"I don't believe that I'll move on at the end of this season - I'll stay here for the next campaign. I'm 20 years old and still have much to learn.
"Barcelona's 'number 9' for the next decade? I hope so. It excites me that people are interested in me. I just need to work hard, score goals, and win titles with Lyon.
"The countries best suited to my game would be Spain, Italy and to some extent England. Maybe in that order.
"But all I worry about is playing. It pleases me that teams like Barcelona are tracking me, but I need to keep on trying.
"This sort of thing is up to my agent. I don't speak to the president, for example. My only job is on the pitch.
"My challenge now is to become the best in the world. I have this goal, but I'm a long way off achieving it."
