Saudi Arabia clear to host 2034 World Cup after Australia drops out


Saudi Arabia was left as a shoo-in to host the 2034 World Cup after Australia confirmed it would not make a bid for soccer's global showpiece on Tuesday's deadline day.

FIFA had invited bids from Asia and Oceania for the tournament by Oct. 31.

Football Australia (FA) boss James Johnson had said the country was "exploring the possibility" of 2034, but on Tuesday the governing body said it would instead focus on bids for the 2026 Women's Asian Cup and the 2029 Club World Cup.

Feckin hell. What's going on? It's reminiscent of the Winter Olympics going to China where nobody gives two fecks about the sport, and the people enjoying the sport hardly get to actually watch it, and everyone knows it's only about the money.

I'm feeling old now, but the world is being fed-exed to hell!
 
I'm sure we'll hear all about how all the heads of FA's around the world ultimately decided that Saudi Arabia was the best bid as they are steeped in football and sporting heritage, and it definitely had absolutely nothing to do with brown envelopes or bribes.

In this case they don't even need to bribe, they are the sole bidder left.

I fully expect World Cups to be played exclusively in that region sooner rather than later.

And 100% we will have a Champions League final played in Riyadh or Doha before 2034.
 
World Cups held in dictatorships and soon the PL to be dominated by Abu Dhabi FC and Saudi Arabia United. The former currently being the subject of an investigation regarding breaking the rules 113 times - an investigation everyone knows how will conclude in 3-4 years.

Exciting times.
 
This was obvious as soon as they announced the Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay were hosting matches. The whole point of that was to clear the way for Saudi Arabia.

Looking forward to the nice armband they will design to combat the lack of women's and gay rights over there and stuff. This World Cup will be a huge boon for emancipation in the region.

To be honest I think it's more that they know which way the cookie crumbles and removed themselves from the running instead of spending millions on something that's already cooked. They spent quite a bit on their bid that ended up going to Qatar and probably don't want to be burnt like that again.

CL final in Saudi Arabia within 5 years I bet. If the EU rules in favour of the Superleague against UEFA, I can see UEFA fully diving into the arms of the Saudi's even before that. FIFA and UEFA suits need their bribe money

If you are saying that FIFA would just allow any brutal, civil rights abusing, war mongering, tin pot dictatorship to host a World Cup just for huge bribes, that's harsh mate. You only have to look at the Hosts over this decade to see it's a totally open, fair and transparent process. Let's see...

Every Western country has trade with Saudi. You fill up the gas every other morning supplied by the Saudis. Why is there an issue if a football World Cup is hosted there?
 
At this point I'd rather just host it in Qatar again instead of SA. At least they've built the stadiums and it's basically one city.

Maybe they'll settle for a bid for the equally prestigious 2026 Women's Asian Cup.

Because it's an infernal huge country with few rights for women and even fewer for homosexuals, transgender people etc.
