2024 U.S. Elections | Trump wins

If Trump doesn't win, will it kick off in the US? Like a mini civil war?

Highly unlikely. Although it will create a power struggle within the Republican party involving ordinary Republicans who want to see the back of Trump and lingering Trump supporters wanting to retain their power within the apparatus.

He's in the middle of an election campaign, he has so much more important things to be doing than having another debate.

Are these two really the best/most popular candidates either party can serve up? I don’t follow politics close enough, but both seem equally repulsive to me, even though I’ve always known that about Donald Trump. Harris doesn’t exactly have a great record either.

Just seems that in general we as a species are becoming weaker and more useless with each generation.

Interested to know what about her record makes you finder her “equally repulsive” to Trump.

Trump is a criminal and sexual abuser, Harris used to put people like him away.

How are they equally repulsive?!?

I never knew Brett Stephens posts on the Caf.

Plenty of people actually did.

This repulsive piece of shit might be even worse than Trump. At least the latter is occasionally funny.

I really shouldn't waste time on this, but I'll bite. Please indulge me - how did you arrive at this conclusion?

Do elaborate, Trump is a rapist, racist, fraud, etc. What has Harris ever done that's equally repulsive?

There is nothing. This is just a trick Republics stumbled onto back when it was Trump vs Clinton as an easy way to get idiots and misogynists to take the lazy option without actually engaging their brains.

I’ve heard it from a few people I know recently and when called out on it, not a one of them can back up the claim with anything real.

I really don't understand the obsession with the candidates. Whichever candidate wins they will likely serve their party (maybe Trump less so which is probably worse).

Therefore, rather than looking at the candidates, look at what the parties stand for. If you can't get inspired by the party then look at the one that will do the least damage.

For me, its absolutely insane that someone can think "I know if the republicans win that they will make the lives of our daughters, sisters, mothers worse, they will likely make the lives of minorities worse, but you know what....there's just something about the way Kamala laughs that makes me not want to vote for her".

Boring sunday, i'll take it?

You are two months too late anyway, this "both siderism"-thing worked better when Biden was the candidate, you don't have anything new?

His views on Ayahuasca are admirable.
There is a growing mountain of evidence that psychedelics, when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, can have life altering positive outcomes, sometimes after one treatment session. The key though is the treatment plan to ensure the "trip" is a guided one that is focused on the positive.

Sadly what RFK is supporting is for people to have the freedom and the liberty to experiment. Not to follow either guidelines or expert advice. So it's not that different from his posture on COVID vaccines in the end.

Of course not. Harris got obliterated last time she ran for President and actually had to face primary competition. Trump's grip on the Republican party is of course well known. In any other ordinary world where the system wasn't already rigged, the candidates would probably be someone like Gavin Newsom or Gretchen Whitmer vs Nikki Haley or Ron DeSantis.

2020 primaries isn't exactly fair though, huge field, and Biden and Sanders going into it with all the name-recognition in the world, how are you supposed to break through?

That said, Haley would likely be a stronger candidate for republicans, same with Whitmer for dems, true.

If you watched the 2020 primaries, it was fairly evident Harris was a weak candidate. If she had the quality, it would've easily shone through given that the two leaders were very old.

I watched some of it, in fact, i have already acknowledged Harris is not a particulary strong candidate, on the other hand, i think you underestimate name recognition.

Was there zero good candidates in that field? I wouldn't say that, but they all got trounced by the latter two, and then Biden trounced Sanders.

Harris just realized it sooner than most others, that it wasn't going to happen.

She was farcically inauthentic by cynically attempting to latch onto the Bernie fad, all the while attempting to remain grounded in establishment, corporate Dem politics. She therefore deprived herself of establishing a genuine political identity that people could connect with, and wound up looking like a confused clout chaser who wasn't ready for prime time.

She is definitely more politically wise this time by not mentioning things like medicare for all and other policies that will never see the light of day if she gets elected.
