2021 Summer Olympics (Tokyo)

I know what you’re saying. And I’m wondering it too.

Any major tournament in table tennis is basically looking for the "Best of the rest" behind China. Germany beat Japan to reach the final, where there is a 99% chance they'll loose against China whose team consists of the three top ranked players in the world (by far). That said, Germany's number 1 lost the semi-final of the singles tournament against the Chinese gold medalist by the smallest of margins and Germany's number 2 used to be the world's best player (but is now 40 years old and not in top shape). It's a good team, but I can see them win one match at most. Everything else would be an unbelievable upset.

Sky Brown put a video of that crash she had last year on her Instagram, it's horrific (you fortunately don't see her hit the deck but can see what led to it), she's lucky to be alive, lucky she had her helmet on, I'm surprised she didn't lose her nerve. Remarkable she's back skating at all never mind winning bronze.

Just watching the women’s 400m hurdle, that world record can go sub 51s as McLaughlin stuttered on the last but one hurdle.

Warholm, Benjamin, dos Santos, McLaughlin, Muhammad, Bol.

The performance of the top three men and women 400m hurdlers has to be one of the top combined efforts of all time, surely? Absolutely insane. All three men beating Young's record with Warholm running sub 46, while McLaughlin and Muhammad both smashed the world record and Bol just missing out on the sub 52 club that no woman had joined until a month ago.

Bol, McLaughlin and dos Santos are all 21 years old.

Just watching the gymnastics from yesterday, the German guy who was 2nd in the parallel bars was delighted, the Chinese winner barely showed any emotion!

Having a fatter belly actually helps lift the heavy weights onto it like a cushion. They call it a power belly.

Right, that is going straight to my list of future excuses:

1. I'm not fat, I'm just big boned.
2. I'm not 'putting on weight', I'm cultivating mass!
3. Pot belly? Haha, that's a common mistake, my friend! No, it's actually a POWER BELLY!

Sounds crazy doesn't it, but it's genuinely too.

I enjoy watching strong man competitions like WSM etc, they all agree it's beneficial

It's a very tough school in China to become an Olympian

You have to wonder what that kind of childhood could do to a person.

That looks horrendous, I'll watch with sound in a bit, that does fit with how he presented, he was almost robotic.

There's so lovely Instagram posts/stories of the GB athletes returning home, stand out for me is a lovely video of Max Whitlocks daughter surprising him at the airport, then him showing her his medal and surprising her with that little toy they get with the flowers

It’s for leverage is it not, helps balance the weight out and provide assistance for momentum.

it also probably helps in training as they’re not leaned up so their muscles are under less trauma. Probably incredibly important when you consider the trauma they put them through

Those kayakers must work delts and shoulders every day. Absolute tanks.

Gable chose violence. (Yall pro wrestling folks might wanna pay attention to this guy - there’s talk he might be going into the entertainment industry when his real career ends)

I watched a bit of wrestling yesterday without the sound on and I didn’t understand it at all. Might tune in later with sound and hope they explain it a bit.

Just a sidenote, for anyone curious/suspicious about that lovely BBC studio with the views over Tokyo, the glass floor and the koi pond, and that long corridor...

That was a stunning performance by Galal Yafai to make the final in Boxing. Amazing fight by both the boxers

Yep. 400m and 4x400 relay last chances for your guys to win gold in sprinting. They've been a joke so far

If 400m and 4x400 are sprints then surely 400m hurdles is that too? In that case they’ve won one.
