2021 Summer Olympics (Tokyo)

Van Niekerk is such a sad story, all-time great career ruined by a stupid friendly rugby injury. 43.03 will take a long time before it gets beaten but Van Niekerk will never return to that level again unfortunately :(

Either way I hope she does well. I can’t imagine the pressure she will be under. I hate doing meetings with more than 10 people involved

the amount of pressure for her will be through the roof, yeah

Really really sad. Agreed that I don't see him coming back to those heights again sadly.

How the feck did the Norwegian survive that false start in 400m hurdles !

She hasn't so far, she claimed there was a noice so they let her participate in order to allow her to file a complaint later for her disqualification so that in case she was right she still had the chance to compete.

Maybe people from Brabant do. Speak for yer self :wenger:

Do you feel any rivalry with Belgium? Never heard anything like it. On Dutch TV which is filled with people from above the rivers they always want Belgium to do well too. My friends from the dark side also want Belgium to do well.

A league or group system isn't the same as a one off event though. I'm also not sure one has ever been decided via coin toss. I'm fairly sure PL protocol is to have a champions play off match, and in competitions like the CL they just revert to ranking (which is obviously determined by past performance).

The two were already separated from bronze by virtue of not having failed a single jump up to that point.

They could have perhaps done a jump off, but given that the point of the sport is "who can jump highest" and both were only ever going to manage lower heights in a jump off, it doesn't seem in the spirit of the games.

I'm not sure why people are so hung up on it. It was a great moment.
It was a great moment but also unique and interesting. Being hung up on it is not the same as finding it interesting and discussion worthy.

I never did, until they became better than us at football. Now they can feck off.

In all honesty though, nah I don't care. I'm indifferent to pretty much all countries. Aside from Portugal in football.

I didn't necessarily mean you being hung up on it, just a few people can't seem to wrap their head around it.

Oh yeah, missed that, don't follow the golf :wenger: That's a nice surprise, was that a shock result I'm assuming?

Yeah it was unexpected but it’s easier to cause upsets at the olympics where only 4 per country can participate unlike the PGA tour where you’re up against 50+ decent Americans.

He’s representing Slovakia these days because he wasn’t good enough for one of the South African spots so won’t show up in your medal count though

What's this about them 'deciding individual medals at 12.45pm'? Is this a further competition or some judging of individual performances in the group event?

It’s a bit like in F1 with the constructors championship and individual championship running in parallel. So Team GB won gold for its cumulative team score being the highest and within that there is an individual standing in which all of the GB athletes are quite well placed (which explains why they comfortably won team gold).

I think they then do an additional individual jump off at the end, which is what is happening now, to determine individual medals. Their starting score before this is the one they’ve already racked up over the last couple of days, so we already know who is in the mix for gold and if the German rider currently in 1st place clears all her jumps and gets round in the allotted time she will get gold.

Ah well darn. Nevermind

Slight chance for a Team GB medal in the Womens 87+kg weightlifting starting at 11:50. Emily Campbell, reigning European gold medallist. Off the top of my head her competition will be China, NZ and USA (NZ being the 'controversial' transgender athlete).

She got Silver! First for Team GB in Weightlifting since 1984! What a result!

To make matters even more confusing, I think there is a showjumping event in 2 days’ time as well where our riders will be going again. That’s separate to the eventing though (where jumping is just one of three things you’re scored on), so the scores will start from scratch. Fingers crossed for some GB medals there - a bit disappointing to have only got the silver in the individual today I think.

Bit late to the game here, but I could swear in the last couple of Olympics, I could just go on BBC iPlayer or red button and watch whatever event I wanted. Now apparently I only can choose between two events at a time, currently weight lifting or hockey. I’d rather watch the women’s 5,000m final.

TV rights have changed. They can only show 3 events at once now.

Well that’s a massive backwards step, it was perfect before. So this is why I have to watch horse prancing instead of a proper sport, because BBC only shows events where GB could win a medal.

Axelsen was impeccable. The way he broke down after winning gold was so emotional, and such a contrast from how he held his nerves during the match

He didn't drop a set in the entire Olympics - ridiculous really. His reaction to winning was incredible. I don't think I have ever seen an athlete not being able to finish an interview because he was bawling his eyes out. Five years of hard work since Rio, where Chen Long beat him in the semis, and it all came out in that moment.

Discovery own the rights for Europe and have sold off bits to national broadcasters. Eurosports have some if you've got that and some Sky subscribing people seem to have an option called Discovery+ that lets you get more channels.

I don’t have any of that, only basic channels. I’ll just have to do without.

I’ve resisted going down the Eurosport/discovery route as I do think the BBC coverage is excellent and want to support it. Plus I hate major national events moving off terrestrial - if there is a legacy from the Games in terms of grass roots impact then that is massively undermined if you move to pay to view channels (obviously that’s not their primary goal).
