She’s not on the plane fortunately.
To give some insight into Tamberi and why he and Barshim opted to share gold instead of going for the jump off
In 2016 Tamberi won every event he took part in, he was ranked N1 in the world going into the olympics and was the heavy favourite to win gold...then he broke his leg a month before the olympics
Barshim became the favourite in Rio after Tamberi's injury, but was pipped to gold by Drouin, who hadn't jumped well going into the olympics. Since then he took over the sport and dominated pretty much every event, but still needed that validation of olympic gold, which would be the first ever for his country
They've been competing against each other for several years, they're friends, and the choice here was...lose the chance at a historic(for barshim)/emotional(Tamberi) gold medal for the chance to...win a gold medal, but not share it with a friend....

A good first sign. Hopefully means she’s being given some help/protection. Poor woman.
They really turned it around after the 7-1 drubbing by AustraliaSuch an emotional moment to see India in semis of Field Hockey Olympics. I was on verge of tears. Hopefully we land a medal in hockey again after 41 years. Will be mighty tough though.

It will be easier to get silver than bronze for us.

Did those 2 who shared the high jump each get a medal? Presumably only one was set aside for that event?

I haven't read the earlier posts about this, so sorry if this has been addressed: I get why the athletes opted to share gold - why wouldn't they? Be a guaranteed winner instead of risking being a runner up. It's a no brainer if they're allowed to do it.To give some insight into Tamberi and why he and Barshim opted to share gold instead of going for the jump off

Is there any particular game that people look at and get an overwhelming feeling of 'I could fecking do that' even though like obviously not really
Volleyball for me. Used to be a goalkeeper and I'd fancy the skills developed to transfer over.
They both did get a gold medal and no silver was awarded. In some disciplines it's not that uncommon for people to share their position, so there will be enough spare medals available. It's not like the medal itself would be worth that much. They're mostly made out of silver and contain a little bit more than 6 grams of gold this year, placing them at around 700€.
Ah ok that makes sense for some reason I thought there would be a silver too!
She was a woman on a mission once she got back up, she tore them apartSomeone tripped Sifan Hassan on the final lap of the 1500m, so she ran from like 50m back to still win the race
Interesting. Why? Belgium is looking all-round best team. They are continuously on the up since 2016 Rio. We do have recent good record vs them though. It will be easier to get silver than bronze for us.
We definitely won't be favourite that's for sure. Belgium are scoring for fun so it looks to be tough task. Although whenever I have seen, India seem to defend well (Didn't watch 7-1 drubbing vs Australia ).What’s our chances of beating Belgium?
Haha. Not sure enough care about hockey here.I was expecting a lets all laugh at ingurland thread
If two sprinters or swimmers finish with the same time, they share the medal. There's no run/swim off to decide a winnerBut what I don't understand is why that's even an option? It goes against the whole concept of elite sport and there being a winner and a runner up. It's heartbreaking for the loser but that's what happens in sporting competitions. What happened today is like two teams reaching a World Cup final (or Euro's!), it going to penalties, and them just being allowed to decide 'you know what, neither of us want to lose, let's just say we both won the World Cup!' Or both players saying the same if the Snooker World Championship goes to 17-17, and a respotted black.
Agreed, but i see it the other wayIt's crazy that the final two competitors in a competition can just choose for both to be declared winners because neither wants to lose. Nobody ever wants to lose in a situation like that, but it's a weird sport / rule that allows it.
Agreed. Massively undervalued the event, and it was not surprising to see it decided by injuriesWhy is long jump this early? Thought it was one of the main events.
They seem to be doing them all mixed up this summer. Why is long jump this early? Thought it was one of the main events.
High jump is a bit different really. The aim is to jump as high as possible, only those 2 managed to jump the highest. They both couldn't clear the next height so it was a draw.I haven't read the earlier posts about this, so sorry if this has been addressed: I get why the athletes opted to share gold - why wouldn't they? What a performance from Indian women's hockey team to shock Australia! Terrific.
The umpiring has been shit though in both men and women knockout matches of hockey. Might be tinfoil hat stuff but umpires seemed to be trying everything in their power to not let India win.
Runs away and shoots himself!..The BBC's interviews have been awful this Olympics. Every time someone has had a disappointing result they just seem to want to rub it in.
"You must be incredibly disappointed with that terrible mistake you made. Tell us how disappointed you are about the terrible mistake."
"You had to watch the race from the side because you made a terrible mistake. Tell us how you managed to make such a terrible mistake?"
"Surely you must feel like this terrible mistake has cost you an amazing opportunity. Talk us through whether you think this terrible mistake has cost you an amazing opportunity."
Why are people underestimating Belgium? Reigning World champions, runners up in last Olympics as well. If anything, beating Germans is slightly easier than beating Belgium
Thank goodness there’s been a resurgence in the men’s and women’s hockey in India. I know cricket is a religion but we have talent at a lot of sports. Every kid wants to be the next Sachin or Virat.Terrific defensive performance from the women's team against the mighty Australians. We never looked like the underdogs this match. We were there neck to neck.
They shouldn't be terrified but I don't know why you rate the others higher than Belgium just based on India's history against them. We already beat the Germans and Australia needed a penalty shoot-out to dismantle a pretty afwul Dutch side.I am not underestimating Belgium. Indian team used to have a inferiority complex for past few years when they face Australia, Netherlands and Germany in major tournaments. I don't think India would be terrified facing Belgium when compared to Germans or Australia. The team will be confident about getting a result in semis.

Maybe awful was over the top yeah, but this has to be your most underwhelming hockey side (or at least performance wise) in quite some time, isn't it?Netherlands were quite good against Australia though.
