"The FBI says it has uncovered a militia plot to violently overthrow Michigan's Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Mrs Whitmer has become a target of coronavirus sceptics after enacting strict mitigation measures that were overturned by a judge last week.

Officials say the kidnapping plot involved six men and plan to hold a news conference. Mrs Whitmer's office has yet to comment on the arrests.

In May, armed protesters opposed to lockdown stormed the state capitol."

Note that Trump has previously called on his supporters to "LIBERATE MICHIGAN" and refused to condemn the armed protesters who then converged on the capitol, calling them "very good people."

Why would I give a feck about Mike Pence? I’ve written his name more in the last half hour that I have my entire life.

I shouldn’t have to let the weirdness of Harris wash over me just because there’s a weirder person on the planet.

Since we are discussing the outcome of the debate last night it seems only fair that we compare and contrast them. I do find it odd that a person would comment about Harris' lack of or oddball personality in the aftermath of a debate where she was up against a bigger oddball with even less personality.

No, but Biden still had the option to BE aggressive. I 100% guarantee you that no matter who was the partner for Harris she would not have been aggressive last night, and that is my point. And that is the bullshit.

What I am saying is it's more nuanced than simple traditional gender roles. Yes, it's a factor but it's tempered by the need for your VP to be that little bit of a follower.

Fine people on both sides right.
Im in MI and I would assume that kinda news is the death stroke for Donnie in this state but what do I know.

My imaginary black wife agrees.

Oh yeah, he definitely had very patriarchal moments. I got that sense, too. I might not go as far as white male supremacy as that's just correlated circumstance but he had a very "ok sweetie" tone throughout.

One used that time to tell lies, the other used that time to correct those lies.

Also, if you remove the time Pence spent saying "Susan", you could shave another 5 minutes off.

That's one of those manager/salesperson tricks that drives me insane. Saying my name in every sentence makes me want to punch you, not buy something from you.

didn't see the debate, did see this

I also didn't watch the debate but that stat seems to be meaningless without finding out how they arrived at it. For instance if Pence was constantly interrupting and talking over Harris when it was Harris' turn to speak then that would automatically lend itself to an outcome where Harris "spoke" for longer.

Yeah, I hate that too

The more important bit is whether they are going to change the rules to curtail Trump’s pcp rage interruptions.

As if rules would matter. Chris Wallace was seen as the "strongest" of the moderators. I am actually interested how he deals with voter questions. He had a real hard time keeping control at his last town hall.

Aye, but will not the town hall setting sort of help with that? I mean, is he going to shout and interrupt if Biden is talking to a voter from the audience? That's optics even worse than last time.

Biden *should* have the overwhelming advantage in a town hall style bc that speaks to his strengths as a communicator. Though a heavily medicated Trump like now - despite cheesy and salesman like - seems more under control of his worst tendencies if his new daily videos are anything to go by.

That's why you give moderators the ability to cut the mike in situations where one person won't shut up.

I posted a link to the affidavit in the Politics thread.

Dude, you quite literally asked : "Why should I give a feck about Mike Pence?"

Me saying you should because he will likely be president if Trump wins and then kicks it is not whataboutism or me commenting on person ABC. I was answering your question.

Nope. I’m saying someone is weird. Not ‘They are too weird to be a VP’.

I do not care about Mike Pence.

Kamala Harris is a ghoul and a weird human.

I do find it odd that a person would comment about Harris' lack of or oddball personality in the aftermath of a debate where she was up against a bigger oddball with even less personality.

Why? Do you honestly need to hear people remind you of things you already know, at every juncture?

Pence is weird. We know this.

Kamala Harris is weird. Fewer know this. She is unelectable to the same degree that Hillary was. But I’m not talking about electability. I’m just saying that human being is weird as all hell.

If you disagree, fine. But you shouldn’t need Mike Pence to help you fight your side.

It doesn't matter. No 'rules' can stop him doing exactly what he did last time. He will agree to rules and then (of course) break them. And what can any moderator do? They can ask him to stop talking, ask him to stop interrupting - and do so repeatedly - but there are no sanctions they can employ.

No no no. No debates. FFS. They're utterly useless.

Another takeaway:

The phrase “American people” makes me hate being an American person.

Right there with you, along with the "USA! USA!" chants.

I fecking detest when a politician or spokesperson commenting "the American People have spoken" often IRT winning an election or this or that when the actual truth is less than half the population made that choice.

They can turn his mike off which would mean no one at home can hear him.

I found her annoying at times during the campaign, but she has generally been normalized at this point. She was never going to win the Presidency (unlike Hillary), but its hard to say she wouldn't make a capable VP.

I just find the comment unusual, especially the insistence that it be taken in isolation after an event that had Harris and Pence side by side on our screens.

Page said she didn’t have that ability last night. Weird that she wouldn’t have it after last week. Hopefully it will be in effect if / when the presidential debates resume.

I'm still in favour of the loud buzzer that no one can talk over.

Yes, its something that has to be negotiated between all parties before it happens. The debate commission could technically force it to happen but not without a lot of push back from the side who don't want to shut up.
