I don't buy that take. Phase 3 trials are big public events. If you sat on one for a week for political reasons, you'd be quickly found out and there'd be hell to pay. Investors and stuff are always clued into these big trials too; there's no way it wouldn't have leaked.

Then again, they could have set the trial schedule with the election date in mind, just so that it doesn't have a huge effect on the race one way or another.

Probably true. I think there is a possible middle ground though. It's not that they had it ready made, just lying there, but it could be that they choose to be a bit more deliberative in their analysis, a bit more cautious in their risk assessment, etc. and had mapped out a timeline that would a) be even more robust and b) avoid any of the political ramifications. I imagine some of the federal agencies involved were conscious of the demonstrable impact the FBI had before, and also conscious of the dangers of a vaccine success story being caught up in a political storm. That would pose risks for take-up of the vaccine, which wouldn't be good for the public health agencies or the corporations' bottom line. Agree that it's not at all plausible it was done and dusted for a week and nobody leaked it.

He actually has been very consistent on this, and has voted with Dems in almost all big votes except Kavanaugh.

Harry Reid himself does not support removing filibuster, and many Dem senators do not support packing the courts (including Hickenlooper).

Manchin is a very centrist (American wise) politician coming from a state that GOP wins by 30+ points. He is not gonna become a partisan politician.

GOP would love getting him. They have been trying to do so for years. Dems know this, and this is while they pushed him to continue two years ago when he was thinking about retirement. Good luck with getting another Dem senator from West Virginia when Manchin leaves (we saw what happened to Doug Jones who was not careful in votes, and well, he is from a state less conservative).

I doubt if Trump will ever actually concede. If he makes no headway with the legal route he's chosen he'll just complain that the judiciary is corrupt and has stolen the election for Biden.

He'll probably try and hold a rally on January 20th to try and take away attention from Biden and Harris. That's how small and petty this guy is. What a f*cking loser.
 
So I live in a small archipelago in the middle of nowhere with 240k people.

We had elections two weeks ago. Our "Trumpist" party, which was formed less than one year ago, jumped from 0 to 5% of the votes electing two MPs. Moderate right made a deal with them, as they needed those two MPs to form a government (centre left party won with a minority), thus legitimizing them.

For any Americans who still question why the rest of the world cares so much about their elections...

Yeah. I recently had a similar experience when I met up with a friend and his girlfriend, both of whom I haven’t seen in a long time.
After a bit of normal small talk, she asked if she could enlighten me. I said sure, thinking it was a bit of harmless fun. Turned out she was a raging quanon nutter, fully convinced that Trump, Bolsonaro, Xi Xinping and Putin are put in power to destroy a massive pedophile ring that both Hollywood and the Democratic Party are major players in, with George Soros, Hillary Clinton and Tom Hanks in the center. So according to her, there’s a power ring consisting of dems and Hollywood and others that does pedophile stuff and also has been orchestrating everything for a long time. But at the same time there’s another group thats also very powerful that managed to put the American, Russian, Chinese and Brazilian President in place. She was also convinced that Michelle Obama is actually a man.
I tried asking for evidence for all these accusations. There was none of course, except youtube videos.
And this was in Denmark, a place where Trump is hated by virtually everyone.

Yup. I notice this even in Norway - the election of Trump has emboldened racist far right pricks. People who earlier wouldn't dare to share their convictions publically are suddenly spouting all sorts of nonsense without shame. And yes, they do believe that Trump is being robbed right now...

Is this just a 2.0 of the same probe that was ordered by Trump after the 2016 election? Based on the massive successes of the lawsuits so far I can't imagine this being anything else than a mirage, for some reason they're still sucking up to Trump. Are the GOP still afraid of alienating his base?

I'm looking forward to the real inquiries into the obvious undermining of the democratic processes which hopefully will be launched when these clowns have left office in January.

Trump was absolutely positive that this was coming. He was slandering mail-in voting and encouraging his supporters to vote in person and he and his legal team got the wheels turning immediately. It was like clockwork.

I saw a story earlier of a judge allowing the launch of an investigation to take place despite there being feck all evidence in the first place.

Is there not a chance that a mountain of unsubstantiated anecdotal evidence with a sprinkling of corruption could keep Trump in office?

I bet a friend 2 euro and 50 cents that he'll stay in so I can at least cry into a cup of tea if he manages it

For those knowledgeable about things in the US, can someone please tell me what George Soros has done? As far as I'm aware, he's very rich, and supports the Democrats in some form or fashion. However, past that, I don't know much about him, yet he's always mentioned as this super powerful figure pulling all these strings, by right wing people.

If it was 270-268 Biden then maybe the courts could save Trump.

But Bidens getting to 300, Trump has no chance

Nothing short of an actual coup is going to keep Trump in power, and I doubt he'd stay in power even then.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. I'd worry about what he'll do while still in power, and the intangible damage he has done and is doing to American democracy.

He runs the biggest liberal grantmaking network for decades, and as a result drew the ire of European nationalists, who then overtime connected with the burgeoning American neo Nazis/ethnonationalists/conspiracy theorists. As politics in America became more and more partisan (intensifying especially after the 2000 election), he became the right‘s favourite boogeyman in online spaces, and that is often tinged with the classic healthy dose of anti semitism (Illuminati/Rothschild) due to his Jewish descent.

I was a bit drunk, but I seem to recall something about Trump being imperfect but that he had been selected as a vessel by those behind-the-scenes do-gooders to break down the dem/Hollywood pedophile, satanic ring. She also believed that the people behind Trump et al had agreements with every other head of state to give up power within months. As in Johnson, Frederiksen, Merkel, Macron and the rest would give up their governments so that the new world order could take over.

It was fascinating, as I’ve never met a conspiracy nut before and she managed to believe in every one of them.

The funniest thing is that a couple of decades ago when I had latin american socialist school teachers, George Soros was also supposedly the backer of all kinds of right-wing conspiracies down here.

He's just a boogeyman of choice, because he's a rich man that openly supports think tanks and organizations that reflect his mainstream liberal thinking, in the US, Europe and elsewhere. But as far as US politics go I'd point out the Koch brothers and Sheldon Adelson, just to name a couple, as more directly influential as they get into supporting specific candidates at even a local level.

Their coders did when making it? Not really all that complicated. It's a company, not a governmental agency, and it's rather ironic that those who've been beating the drum about private enterprise being free from government interference for half a century are now suddenly changing tune.
