I'm fascinated. This bloke has invented his own unique way of saying the time and is absolutely convinced his entire country uses it.
Not the entire country, but there’s very little chance that an American would say 730P PST isn’t the same as 7:30PM PST. Both mean exactly the same thing here, one is just more shorthand & quicker to write or type. Military time just isn’t used as widely.

That’s about like how confused US students normally feel when I explain the UK to them.

“Wait, so they have countries inside a country? What? Why?”
To be fair the US is pretty straight forward (except for D.C and Puerto Rico and not Virgin Isles (I mean the place Tim Duncan is from) and a bunch of other places) compared to the country that insists it's a nation with 4 countries in it of whom 3 have their own governments and the other 1 just kinda is the government for all 4 together but doesn't get it's own.

Finding it incredible how difficult these Republicans are finding the concept of counting.

These states were not allowed to count their mail-in votes until close to election day, hence them all coming in now. The reason they are disproportionately leaned towards the Democrats is because their voters tend to take Covid seriously and thus voted by mail. It's really not hard.

There was none of this uproar when the complete opposite happened in Florida and Biden's lead was slowly overtaken.

To be fair to us our 'countries' have tangible cultural differences and some have their own unique languages. In the US I fail to see why some states are merely cardinal versions of others :p

Folks use the format he used all the time. Especially when on the phone texting.

“Yeah we will start at 630p”
“Sure come over at 900a”

Nobody here would be confused by that.

As an ignorant outsider I don't see why they need so many states. They don't need two Dakotas, Wyoming has about 15 people who live there, and the midwest can pretty much be condensed into two states.
Texas, Arizona and New Mexico are pretty much the same thing - so they're now one State called Big Texas.

Louisiana is just swamps so it can be a big dock for boats coming in to Big Texas.

Mississippi and Alabama look like a Rorschach drawing of my father drunkenly beating me up when I was a kid.

Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania and the Carolinas all have the same last letter so they don't count.

Maryland has barely any Mary's living in it so it's fake news.

I could look at a map for a million years and still not remember where Missouri is. Or care.

True.

Wait am I reading something as "seven hundred" that was actually said as 7-0-0 ? Apologies I couldn't listen to the clip. Or I didn't see the tweet. Or whatever it was. This thread is moving too fast and I'm as guilty as anyone in contributing to that.
Yes. 7:00 is the same as 700. Military time makes no impact in our stating of the time regardless of AM or PM. Confusing? Definitely to an outsider.

The thing starts at 18:30 in the evening, but the guy is coming over at 9 in the morning right?

That's a lot of time to kill before the thing. What are they doing?

Because I don't see why an election can't be properly organised to produce a result on election day (I include the following day).

Why must a result be produced on election day?

I mean, @fergieisold prefers it that way isn’t a great reason.

What’s more important in a democracy, speed of an election count, or quality of an election count where everyone’s vote is counted?

It's amazing how, with all the advancements in science and technology, election processes are still done on paper and manually counted by humans. I can't see that changing soon either, but it's hard to believe there hasn't been a way to computerize the process in a secure way.

It's not so amazing, because paper votes are ultra reliable and leave a physical audit trail, whereas pretty much every e-system that has previously claimed to be secure has eventually been hacked. And even if it hasn't been hacked, there is no way of proving to public satisfaction that it hasn't.

You need complete confidence in the vote-counting process - and to be able to reliably recount if needed. Only a paper-trail system gives you that. Reliability and public confidence are far more important than speed.

There is now a 1 in 5 Chance of Trump getting elected.

what happens if in an election there's an electoral tie. 269-269

i would love to see Kamala Harris fighting in jelly with ACB to decide who wins

yes, i think they are both hot, sue me!

Eurgh.

I’m not American but I’ve spent a lot of time there and I’ve never heard/seen that.

You hear a lot of “coming up at 10/9 central” kind of thing, but I’ve never noticed it expressed as “700/800/900”, at least not without an “oh” before it to mean morning.
See it often. Not saying that 10/9 examples aren’t out there, but the average American doesn’t use any military format when writing numerical times, we use AM & PM & the numbers that show on a clock (or shorter derivatives of them). Most Americans would see & use 700 on a clock, not 0700 or 1900.

ann conway may have been hot a hundred years ago

Because there isn't any good reason why it can't be produced on Election Day. People have voted, I can't see why anybody wants to be waiting days for confirmation of a result when there isn't any need to.

Ok so it’s currently eleven hundred am, when we expecting an announcement man?

I'll take your word for it but I've never heard anyone without a military past say "seven hundred" for time verbally in my life. But then when I'm in the US I usually don't go south of Ohio.

Finding it incredible how difficult these Republicans are finding the concept of counting.

It's more that they're finding the concept of losing difficult. It's why you have them in Nevada shouting "stop counting votes!" whereas next door in Arizona it's "count our votes!".

They can't stomach the notion of their cult leader losing an election, after all the praying they did, after all he's done to save America. The idea of the 'Libs' winning is just unfathomable to them, so naturally it has to be a conspiracy or voting fraud being masterminded by George Soros from Hunter Biden's laptop.

Mind you I'm talking about the voters, the Republican party themselves definitely know its all hysterical nonsense but are going with it to cling on to their power lust at the expense of democracy.

And you guys wonder why it's all falling apart...

It’s entirely disingenuous. Just standard Republican 101 style of being on opposite sides of a narrative whenever it suits and not giving a single feck about being hypocritical because none of their followers care.

Because there isn't any good reason why it can't be produced on Election Day. People have voted, I can't see why anybody wants to be waiting days for confirmation of a result when there isn't any need to.

So speed is more important than accuracy and a democracy where everyone’s vote counts?

Who gives a feck about waiting a few days for everyone’s vote to count.

And a “good” reason is that 150,00,000 is a BIG feckING NUMBER TO COUNT.

So, I don't know if anyone cares amid the heated time-related debates but the difference in Georgia is down to 18k.

I know the answers to both of our North/South pairs if you really want them
