2018 Winter Olympics (Pyeongchang)

Team GB in the mix for any medals today? Don't know a huge amount about winter sports, but we tend to be there or thereabouts on curling, skeleton and short track skating right?

Christie in the short track 500m. Just won her quarter final.

Cross country sprint starts soon, too bad i'm at work, and have to settle with listening on the radio.
Recommend it for people who doesn't know mich about the winter sports.
6 in each heat, the 2 best plus the 2 (from the rest) with fastest time, move on to the semi, then the same for the final. All the heats and finals are done the same day.
Probably the most entertaining and action filled cross country event, together with the relay.

Gutted for Elise. I don’t think she was deliberately taken out, it’s such a lottery.

What does Elise Christie have to do to finish an Olympic final, 3 DQ last time and taken out this year

Eric Frenzel with a dramatic victoy in Nordic combined.

German coach wasn't happy with the conditions during the jump.
Too much wind, which cost Rydzek a probable medal.
Our (Norway) best 2 had shit conditions when they jumped, but we got a good(and a bit sad) 4th with a young kid.
Hopefully they get better conditions in the big hill.

Gold for Wendl and Arlt on the men's double luge, bronze goes to Germany too.

The whole wind issue is turning the olympics into a game of luck. Scandalous stuff. The weather conditions has been a deciding factor in so many different competitions by now. Womens slope style, nordic combined, etc.

I just want to stop by and let everyone know how much I hate Shaun White and everything he stands for.

I just want to stop by and let everyone know how much I hate Shaun White and everything he stands for.

I don't know what he stands for, but I felt really bad for the Japanese kid when watching last night. He pulled off an amazing run not long after a team mate had fallen really hard and had to be carried out. 19 year old fella didn't give a feck an scored a 95,25 with some insane stuff.

Apparently White's last run got a 97+ because the height of his jumps was even higher, but to my untrained eye Hirano's run looked every bit as good (and maybe even better technically). Commentator who was an ex-pro really wasn't sure if White's last run was enough to overtake him. But based on the jury's verdict there was a pretty big difference between the two in the end, so good for Shaun White I guess...

Outgayed only by oil wrestling.

As someone who does not follow snowboarding at all: what does he stand for?

It’s not entirely his fault but he’s the poster boy for, and probably the main driver of, snowboardings real departure from the lifestyle it was and the performance sport it’s become. I used to coach kids and there was a noticeable shift in the attitudes of kids from wanting to improve with your friends, which is what most of us grew up doing, to wanting to just win. It kinda took what was a social pastime for us all hanging with friends and enjoying nature to real sport, and something people couldn’t identify with.

I guess it’s not a bad thing always, and something that is normal in most sports, but a lot of extreme sports have had this sort of identity crisis over the years as they grow to bigger levels.

Also no one likes a winner

Plus most of the worlds best snowboarders wouldn’t pass a drugs test to even be able to compete

Looking to be a disappointing Olympics for Norway. Not as bad as Torino, which was an unmitigated disaster the likes of which haven't been seen since Vidkun Quisling, but we've got some catching up to do.

I take it you weren't around during Calgary '88? Made Torino seem like a triumphant fairytale. 5 medals - not a single gold one.

It's only really disappointing if your expectations are too high.

So far we've won the two we were nailed on to win: Klæbo and Maren Lundby. I wouldn't classify any of the other events that have passed as nailed on.

Remaining nailed on (90% chance) wins: Men's relay, men's team sprint, women's relay (all cross country).
Good chance (75%): Svindal/Jansrud (super G). Women's team sprint (cross country). Men's relay (biathlon).
Decent chance (50%): Svindal/Jansrud (downhill). Kristoffersen (slalom). Team event (ski jumping). Sundby/Kruger (15 km interval). Bjørgen/Weng (30 km). Team event (nordic combined). Killi/Christiansen (slopestyle). Bråten (slopestyle). Kleveland/Roisland (big air).
Outside chance (25%): Kristoffersen (giant slalom). 2xBø/Svendsen (20km and mass start). Bjørgen (10 km interval). Sundby/Klæbo (50 km). Schmid/Gråbak (nordic combined big hill). Johansson/Forfang/Tande (ski jumping big hill). Lorentzen (500m skating)
Long shots (5-10%): Olsbu/Eckhoff (15km and mass start). Women's relay (biathlon).

So in my opinion we are at least nailed on to get another 3 golds. And then you have a bucketload of events where we have a good and decent chance. Realistically we are looking at between 9-12 golds and likely 30+ medals (assuming all planned events go ahead and don't get cancelled because of the conditions).

I've seen 'experts' say we can get 20 golds. Totally laughable. If we had peak Bjørndalen, Bjørgen, Berger, Northug and Svindal then I would've backed that claim but we don't. Just look at that list above, we're relying heavily on relays and team events. To win 20 golds you need a lot of individual brilliance which we don't have currently. Our main stars in these olympic games are either too young (Klæbo) or a bit too old (Bjørgen, Svindal) to consistently be brilliant. Compare that to Hirscher and Fourcade who are at the peak of their powers and probably will end up with a few of 'our' golds.

Gold and silver on the downhill!!! Don’t really care about the rest of the olympics now. Svindal is such a legend.

Lol, gold for Germany in figure skating. Won by a Ukrainian woman and a French man

Lol, gold for Germany in figure skating. Won by a Ukrainian woman and a French man

I just had to check that :D She's been living in Germany since 2002 though (half her life) and he sacrificed any standard of living he enjoyed previously and moved to Chemnitz in 2014.

I was around, I just was a bit too young to appreciate the Olympics.

It's only really disappointing if your expectations are too high.

We're Norwegians, how could our expectations of the Winter Olympics ever not be too high? It's basically what we do (that is, both getting a lot of medals and expecting too many).

I admit, I was purposefully being a bit facetious. It's not that bad.

Yes. You also have the actual advantage of having snow to practice on at home (at least in my stereotype thinking this morning), so some confidence is to be expected.

Good jinx this!
2 gold and 2 silver so far today.

Great gold and silver by Ragnhild Haga and Ragnhild Mowinkel!

How do you do the maths?

50km is too long for Klæbo. You seem to thnk Klæbo, Sundby and Bjørgen are the only ones who can win for Norway.
Think we'll get medal in pretty much all events you listed, the most random ones are women's biathlon, they can win or get 47th.

Svindal is legendary. What a fecking man. You won't find a more deserved gold medal in these games.

2G-2S-1B already today!

That's not true. I just listed the events where we have a chance of gold and named a couple of main candidates. Of course we have other athletes in these events but I would've been up all night if I typed every single one of them. Kruger and Weng are also mentioned by the way.

The point wasn't about who will win but how many potential gold chances we have left.

The "maths" are a rough estimate and of course not 100 % accurate. Based on odds and also an eye test. For example, Feuz was for me the biggest favourite in the downhill based on what has happened in the season so far. Svindal winning isn't a shock but neither would Feuz winning have been. On paper Svindal/Jansrud's biggest chance is the super G so hopefully this is a sign of more great things to come!

Lol, gold for Germany in figure skating. Won by a Ukrainian woman and a French man

Kidnapping the best talent from other countries and giving them German nationality? No wonder you're top of the medals table with these kinds of cheap tactics. Dirty bastards.

Great night/morning for the norwegians! Aksel!!!

The biathletes still can't shoot, though.
