2010 2011 College football thread

Auburn to win the national championship....only for Auburn to be stripped of the title in 3 years time for irregularities.

SEC might be the strongest conference in football, but it is also the dirtiest.

What utter Bollox.

Its the strongest because they recruit in the SE and their is a plethora of talent down here.

Read the post again...at no point did I deny the talent that is available in the south and the recruiting power of the SEC. I said it is the dirtiest conference...I was making two separate points.

One acknowledging it as the strongest conference in NCAA Football, but another saying it was the dirtiest.

I wasn't using that as an excuse to take away from its strength, but simply pointing out how many sanctions it has handed out, or been forced to hand out.

Pac-10 is probably the shadiest conference in recent years thanks to USC.

It's why I'd like this nonsense about 'student athletes' to end, set up some kind of scheme, where players get paid something, or change the recruiting rules.

Everyone knows what went down with Newton, but his dad is taking the fall for it...how convenient.

So from now on, every player accused of anything will bring up some random family member, and get them to take the blame for it.

Most teams use backhanders to tempt top recruits, usually via parents. I bet that is going on in most conferences.

The players should get paid based on appearances and position. Its crazy a colleges can generate near NFL levels of revenue from football and the players get none of it.

That's my point...ok I understand, they are getting free tuition in terms of a full scholarship but a 18-19 year old still needs money.

SEC sign billion dollar tv contracts.....PL eat your heart out, elite schools give big name coaches million dollar contracts, and players get to feel school spirit...hehe.

Clearly years ago it was a huge advantage (weather) to live and play football in the south. It is a religion here but that advantage has lessoned more and more over the years as high school facilities around the country have allowed athletes to train year around. The south dosent have some god given right to produce div 1 athletes. Texas and California produce just as many blue chippers as does the south. The SEC has only really become the best conference in the last 10 years and even during that time they had stints when they were down. Auburn may be the best team in the country but that dosent equate to the SEC being the best conference even though this year I would say they are. The College pundits go on and on about how great the SEC is everyear which has the same impact as Fox news saying over and over again that the president may or may not have been born here.

Having lived all over the country and see college football up close the gap isnt that significant. I will say that the SEC teams my have more athletic depth but its not like oregon wouldnt run riot over most of the teams in the sec they would.

Texas and Florida are neck and neck but Texas has a much larger population. California produces about 10% more players but their population is triple that of Florida's. And lets not forget the SEC also recruits heavily in Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana etc.

The SEC also do a much better job of recruiting from CA and TX. Looking at the top 100 prospects for 2011 I don't see a single players from the south that has committed to a school in CA or Texas. Quite a few players from TX/CA have committed outside their State and region though.

I think the SEC is quite a bit better than the other conferences right now. Oregon would hold their own on the SEC but no way would they go unbeaten with that defense.

Most of those guys won't make the pro's and in the process of making millions for their schools they are destroying their bodies. Excellent trade off imo!

Well in all fairness even the ones that do make the pro are too thick to hold onto the money. Its probably better the colleges take the money.

So auburn went undefeated with their poor defense and oregon couldnt? actually oregon D is higher rated then Auburns.

People say how tough the SEC is and it is but they had a team go undefeated in it this year two last year and and one the year before that. Im not saying that the SEC isnt the deepest in talent but again the difference between the PAC 10 SEC Big 12 and Big 10 is negligible.

BTW california population is approx 40 million and florida is 19 million. My point was that if the main sport in california was overwhelmingly football then they would produce just as many if not more blue chippers as florida or florida georgia, alabama etc. We dont have better athletes in the south, it just that almost all of the best are pointed towards the gridiron as aposed to other sports.

The SEC malarkey is a product of hype generated by the networks and its fans. CBS has a mega contract with the SEC and built up the hype, and other networks have fed off it. Granted, it is a tough conference and extremely competitive, but the likes of 2005 USC and Texas, 2002 Miami, etc., would have walked the conference. It's crap how the excuse is "they beat each other up that's why it's rare to go undefeated" as if other conferences don't do the same during conference play.

Urban Meyer retires. Class by him at the press conference. Wonder who goes to Florida talk about a big job that is ready to go , Gruden? Jim Harbaugh? Stoops? hmm I could Bob Stoops going there he was there defensive coordinator 10 or 15 years ago

How much revenue does a college football team rakes in anyway in a football season ?
I was in the states in the early 90's studying and i didn't think that they generate that much income then

Teams can pull in $80+ million and make $40+ million profit that gets pumped back into the college.

Think about this: The highest paid employee of the State of California (I mean the entire state government) is Cal's football coach. That would never fly unless these programs generate as much money as they do.

Don't really watch College Football, but great game between Carolina & Tennessee and the most farcical end to a football game I have ever seen.

Also, there was an earlier game and they called a penalty for 'unsportsman like conduct (excessive celebration)' when the WR saluted the fans - the most stupid rule and the most stupid penalty I have ever seen.

Next year if you get a celebration oenalty they will wipe away the score

Just like to say feck Carolina.

Also, players are already getting paid via free education, food, housing, etc. Stipends, spread throughout all sports because of Title IX, are completely unrealistic. Very few schools actually make a profit on sports because they have to spend football/basketball money on other non-revenue sports. If only profitable schools can pay stipends, then college sports will die. Much of the money that the NCAA makes goes back to schools as scholarships to increase the number of student athletes across various sports.

Bogus call on the Kansas State touchdown. In the Tennessee/UNC game, a Vols receiver did a similar act and wasn't flagged. Hogwash. There is excessive and there is not excessive - simple.

That Vols/Tarheels game was insane but the Vols shot themselves with ridiculous penalties and that blocked extra point. I was shocked UNC ran the ball with no timeouts and less than :20 remaining. But the refs got it right - there was :01 when the ball was spiked, the penalty was assessed against UNC, and they were given another play. There is no run off in NCAA that I'm aware of. In the NFL, the game would have been over after the offensive penalty run off (except during dead ball situations).

spot on!

I have come to the conclusion that each SEC fan is basically GlastonSpur and peterstorey combined but on a NCAA delusional scale.

Speaking of, who actually roots for a conference? I don't get that. I'm a Texas fan - why the feck would I want OU or A&M winning a national title and having bragging rights for years? If you allowed SEC fan to vote in the polls, he/she would vote all 12 schools 1-12 and everyone else after. They truly believe the likes of Ole Miss or Vanderbilt have elite football squads and could beat an Ohio State, or Texas, or even TCU. And that Georgia and Arkansas would win every other conference. They will often make ludicrous claims like Florida with Tebow could beat the Cincinnati Bengals and Bear Bryant invented football.

Spare me delusional SEC fan.

It's the big one tonight.

The BCS presents the Cam Newton show featuring Nick Fairley and the Oregon Ducks.

I'm all over Auburn at -1. Should be one hell of a shoot out regardless.

Go Ducks! At least they don't have anyone who should be ineligible. Screw Cam and his scumbag dad.

Auburn should be favorites. I think they'll win, but I'd rather Oregon win.

Auburn are playing like they did in the first quarter v Alabama

Oregon has some sexy cheerleaders, sure Auburn does too

0-0 end of the 1st

Oregon on the Auburn 4, 3rd & 2
