2005 GAA Championship

its all about putting the ball over the bar or in the net, Tyrone probably didn't have a great day which was evident in the 1st half, Dublin didn't have a great day either with another almost catastrophic 2nd half collapse.

There is no argument that Tyrone are the better team, they won an All-Ireland in 2003 and are still up there as one of the top 3 sides in the country. They should win the replay. Dublin are a fairly young team trying to make the breakthrough at this level. They are moving in the right direction and are certainly a lot better than they have been over the last two seasons.

Fair enough, there's been an improvement.....not sure about the young team trying to make the breakthrough, but one thing at time. Cluxton (even though he's still young), Christie, Goggins, Whelan, Moran, Brogan, Sherlock, Andrews, Homan, Connell, Cosgrove, Farrell and others...they've all been this far before, several times in fact for some of them. Did you not see Pat Spillane making the point to a very uncomfortable Tommy Lyons that he was mystified as to the progression in Dublin this year, seeing as the panel was more or less the same as for previous years.....by Tommy's face, you'd swear he looked like he'd had a bad pint or something, not impressed at all. I'm not knocking Dublin too much, but you have to admit, some of the early season cannyness has gone right out the friggin' window now.....all it took was one game, that ye didn't even win, and in fact were blessed to even get a draw.

I like this quote from Eamonn Sweeney in the Sunday Indo,
ah jaysus....here we go.....

"Two unique things about Dublin football. There is no roll like a Dublin roll, the crowd going mental, the players feeding off the joy of having the most vociferous spectators in the country, every move stamped with unmistakable confidence. A Dublin roll goes over everything in its path, sporting logic is helpless before it. It is a force of nature.

There is no collapse like a Dublin collapse. Armagh 2003, Westmeath 2004, a hat-trick of catastrophe was nearly completed by Tyrone in 2005. When Tyrone moved a couple of points clear with time running out having trailed by 5 points at half-time, Dublin looked like men trying to run while waist deep in water. We were treated to the too familiar sight of a team from the capital suffering the equivalent of a collective nervous breakdown.

But these are different Dubs. Under Tommy Lyons they developed the knack of losing games they should have won. Under Paul Caffrey they've become more adept at getting out of jail than the Colombia Three.

Dublins name might not be on this years championship but its engraved somewhere in the vicinity."

If, and its a big if, Dublin can make the "roll" last for 70 minutes who knows.

See. :boring:....what in the bejaysus is he talking about?

Thats Spillane losing the run of himself in the heat of the moment as he's liable to do on occasion. The Dublin team has in fact changed quite a bit over the last three years. Of the current starting 15 and the players you name, only Whelan, Sherlock and Christie can be considered veterans. Cluxton, Goggins, Moran and Brogan only made the team proper three seasons ago. Andrews, Homan and Connell are subs. Cosgrove has disappeared and Farrell has managed just one minute of Championship football this year.
What about O'Shaughnessy, Casey, Cullen, Quinn, Keaney and Cahill ? They're all realatively new and are certain starters and if you add the other young bucks like the aforementioned Cluxton, Goggins, Moran and Brogan you'll have 10 young lads who'll line up out of 15 players.
So yes I think I'll stick by my assertion that this is a young Dublin team on the cusp of a breakthrough, probably not this year though but the future is a lot brighter than it has been.

Still think Tyrone look good for sam this year!! They have been through really tough games and have character and imo the best forward in the country in oneill!! (Just slightly better than cooper.) Good to see the dubs put it up to them but I think it will be a Tyrone Kerry final.

I wouldn't totally rule Cork out of it as its always a fairly close if dull game between those two

I hope its Kerry though as Cork if they win will be eaten in the final

I think kerry will do cork as they have the class and experience that cork lack. Cork are good but have a youngish side who havent really done much over the last few years! Kerry will be too much for them!

We've only gone and dropped Mike Frank Russell and Dara Ó Cinnéide.....JackieO is hard manager....two real superstars dropped, just like that. It's something he's done before, he always picks a team to form, regardless of who gets the bullet. Paul Galvin is in, which is understandable, he's an All-Star and was excellent when he came on against Mayo, but Bryan Sheehan is a bit of a surprise really, especially with Declan Quill in the running. Sheehan is a good player though...classy like, takes a good free as well. Although with Dara out, we might see Gooch take a few, Sheehan taking a few. Also Declan O' Sullivan at full forward will have Morgan pulling his hair out. Whatever plans he made for containing the Kerry forward line have gone right out the window - there's no way he predicted that line-up. All the new line-up has to do now - is feckin' work!

Then again, look at the Kerry subs bench.....Mike Frank, Dara, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, Declan Quill....not a bad plan B there.

Its nothing to the dubs bench with Dessie Farrell on it. He is always worth 2 points and his feckin knees fell off 2 seasons ago!! ;)

There's a small chance you'd get more than 2 points out of our lads....
Most counties would jump at the chance to have MF Russell and D o Cinneide in their forward lines. It shows the standard in kerry when they can axe them and feel confident the lads they bring in will do a better job. MF hasnt had a super season by his standards but then his standards are very high!!

You'd have to say Cork were poor....then again, all Kerry's opponents 'appear' poor.

Anyway..I actually think they were poor, although our defence was outrageous, and Gooch is a freaky point taker.

I'm glad we're playing one of Tyrone or Armagh in the final, that's what I wanted all along...it'll be some match - but I wouldn't like to be reffin' it.

Ah well, its over for the Dubs for another year, I knew deep down we'd be beaten by a superior Tyrone side. Tyrone were in control from strat to finish and even when Dublin hit 5 points in a row midway thru the 2nd half to close the gap to just 3 points you always knew Tyrone had the ability to move up a gear and finish it off. On the plus side Dublin are in better shape than they have been for a long time. I like the manager, he's a canny lad, so much so that he got more out of the team than the sum of their parts, he needs to tweak things a bit yet and "find" a few more players but no better man for the job.

Havent seen the Kerry/Cork game yet but will watch the highlights at 9.30 on RTE. Its an impressive sounding victory for Kerry, they really walloped Cork and now have the advantage of sitting back and watching both of their possible final opponents battle it out next week.

AT least Utd won again ;)

Cork fans were leaving at half time.

Wonderful.

I remember us beating Donegal in a replay a couple of years ago and the same thing happened, the Donegal fans were leaving in their droves. As they left en masse you could see the yellow painted steps leading to the exits. All the Dublin fans started singing "Follow the yellow brick road, follow the yellow brick road, follow follow follow etc etc...",

its great gas being a Dublin fan

Is that poor aul seamus gettin an eyeful? He wont be winning any beauty contests after that!

Billy hates Kerry with a passion...with good reason too. I have a bit of time for him though and I'd say most Kerry people would have a lot of respect for him from all the battles over the years. He was very sore about it yesterday alright and in fairness they probably caught him while his gander was up - I've heard him say that Kerry were cynical and that it would have been a different story if Cork were close in the last 15 mins....that's just bollox talk, he can lay off Kerry for a start, Cork were poor - that's all he should be worried about.

On a side note, I wonder will the video panel or GAC or parish chamber of commerce or whoever the feck have a look at Brendan Ger's bit of thuggery yesterday?....either way, roll on the final now.

Just saying good luck to Dessie. I dont think we will see him back in a blue shirt again and it was great to see him grab a goal!! Would have preferred to see him grab the winning goal in the All Ireland final though!!

Very boring voice he has...listening to him on the radio sometimes, jaysus...painful. But fair play, happy retirement.

Anyway, this weekend....predictions

Armagh v. Tyrone.....too close to call IMO. A drawn Ulster final, a victory for Armagh and now another one......I'd normally go for Armagh, but I'm drifting....

Verdict: Tyrone.

Tyrone will do it for Canavan and I feel they were robbed by Armagh for the Ulster Title!! Good luck to Sean Boylan as well!! Sorry to see him not given another 3 years by the Meath board! I think he could have got them motoring again!!

Fierce match today....fair play to Tyrone, they never buckled.

Anyway...where are Kerry going to get a freetaker for the final?
What about cooper? He is kicking them from anywhere lately!!

Gooch has tremendous ability with the ball - and is mightily accurate over a wide range, I'm sure he could knock over a few if called upon, no doubt whatsoever - and he'd be brilliant at it. bryan Sheehan takes a good free, as does Dara O'Cinneide.....we just don't get many frees, haven't needed to rely on them at all this year really. The problem is that in the final against Tyrone, I reckon there'll be a lot more frees given, instead of straight points kicked from play. Mickey Harte will identify this I'm sure - but so will Jack O'Connor. To be honest, JackieO likes to pull a few surprises in his line-up...I wouldn't rule out Mossie Fitz for a start for the final!...could you imagine the look on Harte's face?....

I would love to see Fitz start!! A class act that we havent seen enough off imo!! I think Kerry will struggle to get their game going against Tyrone though and I can see the Red Hand Gang edge it by a point in the dying moments!

is he still playing at club level and if so how good/bad has he been ?

He still plays for the club...St. Mary's Cahirsiveen and South Kerry - who won the county championship last year, with him as captain. Still a good player I'm told, then again you don't lose those kind of God-given abilities, obviously though, he's less able to meet the the physical demands. He plays with Bryan Sheehan now, hopefully the younger fella will learn from the master.

One of the greatest ever IMO....you'll need realplayer to watch this particular moment....although, you may not really want to...
