19 children and 2 teachers killed in Texas school shooting (24 May 2022)

It just never changes with the United States. The same thing happens over and over again and nothing changes.

I am so sick to my stomach seeing this, we are talking about CHILDREN here, primary school age, just being killed, this is sooo tragic.

My heart goes out to all of the parents, & their siblings that have gone through this.

Plus the dead teachers family as well.

I just honestly don't see why there are gun companies in operation, who really needs a gun, apart from what is a very small niche of Olympic & Paralympic athletes, no one else should have the ability to own a gun.

It is utterly heartbreaking seeing news after news like this.

I remember our own shooting in Scotland, after that, things changed pretty quickly, sadly I can't see things changing in America after this.

Schools should be a place where child ho to learn, have fun, experience new things for the first time, not be killed.

The NRA have soooo much to answer for, they well and truly have blood on their hands.

When nothing changed after Sandy Hook, I gave up.

Nothing will change. Half of Americans will still vote for those ensuring the NRA remain able to buy politicians. And tbh, at this stage it's not even about funding - the politics of unapologetic gun love over human beings lives is a big part of what gets the GOP base going.

Drop the current tactics and rhetorics, they don’t work.

Overturn of DC vs Heller and a blanket gun ban + confiscation/buy back scheme, that’s what needed to end the carnage. If you don’t have the balls to state your goals and just skirt around the issue with half hearted bandage measuring like national registry, checks etc…, this will keep on happening.

How else does one do it at that stage? Hopefully it was with sympathy & grace.

Oh I don't know. It's just very upsetting and maybe I'm over-reacting. It's just that line 'they were told if they were still there...' makes it sound like it was an announcement to them all which doesn't seem like the best way to go about delivering that kind of news but I take the point.

'stop politicising this tragedy'

It's political decisions that allow these things to happen. It is fecking political!

This. Political decisions are the reason why we have this mess when lessons should have been learned and applied since 1999.

In Canada, it sure took us a long time and a fair share of deadly shootings going as far back to the 1989 Polytechnique shooting in Montreal. And yet it took a recent massacre in Nova Scotia to find a decisive action from our current government to finally ban 1,500 models of military-grade assault-style weapons, which are the tools most likely to create havoc if in the wrong hands. The United States seriously need to start smelling the fecking coffee at this time.

Guns are a religion here.
I really don’t get it.

I get that there’ll be large numbers in America who will never want to give up their guns/rights but surely after so many of these events, so many people killed, so many young people killed.. arent they the minority?

Don’t the majority of Americans think “that’s it, I want our politicians to change the law”?

If my congressperson/senator (sorry I don’t know how the US political setup works) was pro guns, I’d probably want them voted out. If they haven’t been, that suggests that most voters either specifically want gun rights to remain unchanged OR are neutral about the subject.

Again, I don’t get it. As an outsider looking in, seems mental that this keeps happening and there’s no public/political will to change things.

As others have pointed out, when they did absolutely nothing after Sandy Hook they'll never do a damn thing. Just google Sandy Hook victims and look at the pictures of all those lovely kids. If you don't care as a nation to take the neccessary steps needed to reduce the chances of these shootings to keep happening after an event like Sandy Hook then you are beyond help.

Many Americans don't believe guns are the problem, that guns don't kill people, people do. So the solution would be to arm the teachers.

We could try telling republicans that women are using guns for abortions

Criminals will always find a way to get illegal gun. Banning weapons and the right to bear arms and protect yourself just leaves you defence less against these shooters.

All these schools should have trained and armed security personnel. Ex military or law enforcement.

After something like this thinking we don’t need guns is absurd.

Criminals will always have access to guns, banning guns help the criminals more then the innocent.

They are just beyond help at this point. That country will just keep crumbling and crumbling.
To seek out children for this thing. Especially seeking out children. I wish I’d believe in hell.

If an illegal gun cost 30k bucks instead of the 1 grand it costs now to buy in legally in Wal-Mart, shooting up a school might not be the best return of investment.

He bought 2 assault rifles on his 18th birthday and that's cool, ffs. How does that not raise a red flag?

I own guns, I live in Ireland, once I go above 3 guns I'm subject to a home visit from the cops and a detailed investigation, I'm 43 and have held firearms licences for most of my life, but I'm fine with all that.

How does an 18 year old buy a couple of assault rifles on the first day he can and not raise some suspicion?

And yet in Europe you don't have to think about schools needing armed security. Weird that isn't it? I wonder why?

You can buy guns at 18 but can't buy alcohol until 21? Wow.

I'm hoping I'm missing the sarcasm here, it's late where I live, I'm tired.

Most of these shootings are carried out by people with no criminal record by people with access to legal firearms.

Those people are idiots.

And even then, politicians write laws and won’t do anything. The fact that one party (and maybe some from the other party) can be swayed/bought to the point these tragedies are apparently “acceptable” to them, is so depressing.

Wonder how many Republicans are tweeting “thoughts and prayers” and a praying emoji…

This is parody, right? ... right?

And when one of the armed security personnel suddenly kills 30 kids, what’s next?

Guards guarding the guards?

Thinking more guns is the answer to guns is absurd.

(edit. I nearly added something to my reply then I thought I’ll get thread banned or banned)

It’s crazy that just today a 14 yr old in Liverpool got convicted for murdering a 12 year old few months back. I was thinking all day about the impact such an incident has on the family of both of them and then now this happens to like 15+ children in one go. Families never ever recover from something like this and I can’t even imagine the Trauma some of the kids who survived will go through. Madness

That I agree with you, I think thrust should be changed on what guns you can or can’t buy and at what age and more in depth screening

The NRA/GOP/Gun manufacturers basically have a 'zero budging' policy. And the gun nuts have been told non stop that the libs are coming for their guns and once they do the government will own them. And there are enough people like Alex Jones that will make a large portion of the base think this was planned or fake.

You'd think even if guns aren't banned, the GOP could agree to mandatory training or some sort of mental testing, but no, they will never give an inch. They're paid by the gun corporations to basically do what Ted Cruz did, deflect and blame the liberals.

There is no common sense for 60% of the US population, so this will never get better. It can only get worse.

The idea that criminals will get guns regardless shows an immense lack of understanding of the wide variety of people who ultimately fall under the heading "criminals".

In reality other countries are full of whole swathes of "criminals" who never even get near owning a gun.

Feck, I knew America had issues but if 60% have seen hundreds of school kids die year after year and still think the current gun laws are acceptable, I despair.
