We aren't building a squad on that type of budget. We'll lose more than we gain because any real player wont stick around to watch us sign 2 players every summer and hope for top 4.
We've lost Herrera and Fellaini and we didn't buy a midfielder, Lukaku arguably our only real striker is leaving again without a replacement. Next summer it will be Pogba, we'll just keep going round in circles.

I don't think we did try. It is the same story for the last 3 summer windows. First it was Perisic, last year it was centre back, this summer it is midfield. Club always briefs the media that the targets were not available for the right price and I don't believe it anymore. We just don't make the effort or we are not doing this properly. I don't know which but it isn't right.
Okey, Longstaff is nowhere near 50 million, but is he the only one? Find someone else. Our squad is not like 2008. We need signings, we do not have CL, we are not as appealing as we were, so of course we have to overpay. It's not like we are building a stadium and have budget constraints. Should have gone for Ziyech. He desperately wants to move to a top club so I think he wouldn't demand huge wages. Fits our new style of football and can play on the right. Would only cost around 30m too.
I think you fail to understand how big business budgets are handled. There isnt a bank account with Ole's name on with exactly £100m in.
Deficits are balanced against forecast profits and expenditure.
If a chance to sign Dybala appeared that would only send us £50m over budget, you call your finance team and tell them to find away to balance the books.

It's not even about selling Lukaku. It's the fact we lost 2 midfielders AND Lukaku and haven't replaced any.

100m net is unlikely to be a budget because it's what we can roughly afford. And I wouldn't be surprised if you use shares of revenue instead of a figure like 100m.

Next summer I'd put good money on:
Pogba out for £150m, leaving us £220m to spend. We will Sancho - £120m, Longstaff £50m and a CAM/ST for £50m.
The "net spend" stuff is such crap. It means nothing. That said; I will be extremely disappointed if we dont get in one more defensively oriented CM today and a stop-gap replacement for Lukaku would be OK as well. That would make it an OK/decent window. So far its not enough and one really needs to wonder why OGS does not seem to want to upgrade the midfield.
Add in the Fellaini sale please. I want to see it even worse show these owners exactly what they are. Leeches
Day after the summer window closed last year, didnt Woodward come out and say we 100m set aside for Varane but couldn't get the deal done. Now 12 months later thats our entire budget and even that wont be spent, yet the expectation is we will be a better sqaud.

Add to the above that if Zaha is sold we get the cash that we spent on James, so total spent = 53 million.

Net spend isn't crap as we have sold a proven GS and been forced to rely on inconsistent attackers or ones with no appearances. If we had liquid funds available surely we would compensate for our losses with a more reliable strategy. Sell to buy is low level especially when having to sell experience and rely on youth
I think we have a good squad. Maybe not good enough to win the title yet, or most likely even challenge, but still good enough to get top 4 and challenge for the title in 2020-21 onwards.
Firstly, we have a goalkeeper in De Gea who at his best is the best goalkeeper in the world. Its just a matter of whether he can regain his form from 2014-15 to 2017-18 and before, and judging by the solid pre-season he’s had, I back him to do so.
We also have the second best defence in the league, in my opinion. Maguire gets into every team in the league due to his defensive and distributional abilities, hence why City wanted him and Wan-Bissaka does the same aside from Liverpool due to his defensive abilities, potential and high energy. Along with that, Shaw and Lindelöf have great potential and judging by last season, both are fully on track to realise it.
Moving on to the midfield, McTominay is yet another player with a high ceiling and just like Shaw and Lindelöf, is on the right track to realise it and reach the top. His commitment is second to none as well, something any player needs to make it to the top of the game. Needless to say, Pogba is world class and would get into any team in the world when on song, let alone the league.
Most likely, the three who will likely play in front of Pogba and McTominay to start the season will be James, Lingard and Martial. Sharing an opinion with most United fans, I am not happy that Lingard is going to start the season as our number 10 due to the obvious reason that he’s not good enough for a team with title winning aspirations. However, Martial and James are two players with huge talent and potential, along with an astronomical amount of pace to burn. Martial has already shown his quality in various games over the last few seasons and if used right and mentored properly, could be magnificent this season. James has been extremely exciting during pre-season and showed that hyped up pace was no joke. While he’s been lacking in end product, that is something coachable and improvable.
Finally, Rashford is yet another one with massive potential. I honestly believe that if he improves his finishing, he will go on to be the 25 goal a season striker that we’ve been craving since Van Persie. He constantly gets into the right positions to score and has already outscored many greats when they were at his tender age of 21 (Henry, Drogba etc).
However, on a slightly negative note, we are lacking in depth a little in midfield and upfront if we don’t sign Mandzukic. This is not necessarily a bad thing though, as we have four very talented players coming out of the academy ready to be understudies to the first 11 in Garner, Gomes, Chong and especially Greenwood. In addition, players like Romero, Tuanzebe, Pereira, Mata, Sanchez and should we sign him, Mandzukic are more than capable backups who can make a positive difference too.
What i’m trying to say is that this is a talented squad that we have at our disposal who I think are capable of challenging for and even winning the title if not this campaign, then in future seasons. Its really not all doom and gloom if you try to positively break down our current squad as i’ve done, so lets be positive about this season!

You are correct, its more like bullshit.
We have cash at hand at almost 200m according to the last quarterly statement. Its almost financially irresponsible to be fair to operate with that much cash even if our turnover is bigger than anyone elses in the PL.
The transfer fees is not the issue. Our wage bill is. I seriously dont get why people cant get around to this fact. We have signed Rashford and (most likely) De Gea up to new expensive contracts as well as not paying Maguire (especially) and Wan-Bissaka exactly peanuts. We have lost Herrera who was on nothing money and Fellaini who got a big fecking raise from Mourinho but was just paid for like 6 months. So we have increased our wage bill yet again and we will prob be touching 310m or something now.

It's called going over budget. E.g. A&E departmnet at the Manchester Royal Infirmry could go over budget and still be operational. You can renovate a house and go over budget by £20k. In these terms a budget is a target to stay within, for whatever reason. Going over budget has consequences. Just becuase you can't see these consequences, doens't mean they are not there.
Someone at the club obviously set a budget which was deemed sensible for this transfer window. Whether the motivation was penny pinching, lack of faith in the manager, contentment in our league position, forecast expenditure, keeping financial reserves (maybe they set aside the Sancho money for next year) or just greed from the Glazers, we don't know.
But every move we've made in this window indicates we have a budget somewhere in the region of £100m.
I think I read somewhere not sure if it is factual or not because I haven't had time to check, and at work at present. But swear I read our net spend has avg £50 mil a season since the Glazers took over.
Can still be done today but as you know as a fellow dutchman, Ziyech is very picky about which clubs he wants to transfer to, so I'm not sure he wouldn't opt to stay at Ajax

We spent less than 100m because Dybala didn't want to come here. If he would have accepted coming here, our net spend would have been 140-150m pounds (not counting agent fees and signing on fee).

We had to wait to sell Lukuku, because there would be room in the squad if the deal didn’t go through. Let’s be honest, most of us didn’t think Inter would actually come up with the money - I thought he would be here this season (although very glad he’s not).
Yes, but it would have set our transfer budget to 140-155m pounds (initially it was reported Lukaku + 15m for Dybala).
United has around 200m pounds in the bank. It is financially irresponsible to just leave the money there (inflation and all that). The reasons why we have not to spend more is if the main targets didn't want to come here (or either the clubs or the players required an absurd amount of money for them). But providing that we wanted a player, the club sold him at a reasonable price and the player asked for reasonable wages (reasonable doesn't mean cheap, see Maguire), we would have signed that player. Case, Dybala. We wanted him, Juve was reasonable, but Dybala apparently asked for 350k+ salary (or didn't want to come at all).
I agree, we should've gone for players on the cheap like Ziyech and Brandt who would easily walk into our lineup.
I just can't believe we're going into yet another season with Mata and Lingard in our starting lineup, It's a tough pill to swallow especially when all of our rivals are upgrading their midfield and attack.
