Álvaro Carreras

Was always a bit dumb to loan then sell a promising left back a year ago for peanuts when we were having a left back crisis. Not sure how using a buy back impacts the whole financial thing and the little bit we gained from selling him in the first place.

Ineos correcting their mistake is probably the smarter thing to do than spending 40m on Dorgu if the buy back is active now. We need to show we will move on from targets if teams ask for too much. Simply paying up every time means nothing will ever change.

Not just that, play the long game. Get into agents ears early, make sure players and the agents know if they sign stupid extensions we're never going back in for them.

We need to be targeting players, where we have negotiating leverage. 2 years of less left on the deal, where it's risky for the selling clubs to reject the bid.

If the release clause is true, with the financial trouble we have I don’t know why we haven’t already activated it? It makes so much sense to bring him back when we’re crying out for a decent left wing back.

Yeah that one was a bit weird though. Bid what, 35-40m for Branthwaite and then signed Yoro for 60-70m? Usually when you move on you go to a cheaper target but TBF we got what they felt was the better talent.

Yoro was £52m and our last offer for Branthwaite was around £50m.

Buy back clause is a fixed value that if the buying club meets the potential seller doesn't have a say in denying. It's still always up to the player if he wants to leave or not, like Zubamendi to Liverpool in the summer.
Ok good to know, thanks. I thought it was more, we get first dibs if they sell him.

62m euro + 8m euro add ons is what BBC says when I google it, so yeah 60-70m

Incorrect. 62m euro with (not additional) 8m euro add ons.

Interesting how you have used euro for Yoro’s fee but quoting Branthwaite in GBP but this is also incorrect (£50m and not £40m as you have said)

This thing about him being slow and weak is nonsense. He has a fantastic ability to glide past players, has a great left foot and looks like he still has some filling out to do physically.
His weakness is defending, but he will have less responsibility there as a wing back.

What has “gliding past players” got to do with physicality?

Every source says 62m + 8m on top for euros.
Was guessing for branthwaite, couldn't remember what we got to

Raphinha was so much faster than him here.

I don’t think he was faster than him as Raphinha had a head start. However I don’t think it was great defending at the end

I do think though that he might be a good candidate to replace Martinez at LCB as he’s filling out

Agreed, his pace isn't the issue in the video, it's his defending at the end

My gut is telling me that the running power of Dorgu would be a better fit for the requirements that silky skills of Carreras. But hey I could be totally wrong
Cool. Being honest, I haven't watched Dorgu at all but from his highlight videos he doesn't look amazing. If we buy him I'd hope I'm wrong but I think Alvaro has great ability and has the experience now, and for less money considering our situation.

Better than no left wing back at all but we badly need athleticism in this team or we're only going to improve so much.

The problem is that we’ve not valued physical flooring for like 5 years of transfers now so at this point we HAVE to take it over a potentially better “value” deal like this one.

I really don’t think people realize how fecking slow/weak/unathletic we are to just an average PL team.

You can see that Raphinha is slightly ahead when the ball is played but quickly extends before slowing down and Alvaro catches up then.

Agreed he sold himself way too easily.

That’s my worry

You're probably absolutely spot on in fairness. I had wondered about signing both Alvaro and Dorgu seeings we need more than one wing back but at this point I'd almost say that every single player we sign for the foreseeable has to have elite physicality to make up for the absolute lack of it through our squad

Yeah pretty much. Plus it's by far the easiest thing to "fix" in that there isn't really a question of whether a player is a top athlete or not. They either ARE or aren't. Bare minimum you could turn the squad into another Newcastle type team with a few windows where we can go out and try to bully teams with strength and pace even if we don't play particularly fluid stuff (and honestly I wouldn't mind it, I'm so tired of seeing us get embarassed physically by shit standard teams).

United needs athletes.

The physical/athletic profile of our team is really low - and it's no surprise we often get bullied on the pitch. Opposition is faster, stronger, fitter, gets to the ball first, wins duels etc. This guy doesn't help us in that regard.

I hope we get Dorgu

I actually didn't see his pace as a problem watching the benfica game. Absolute joke of a pen call on him as well.

…. And yet people want him over Dorgu
To be fair theres not much in it. Dorgu is playing for relegation fodder and hasn't regularly played in the position we're meant to be signing him for, at the top level. All we know is he's physically superior to Carreras, that's about it.
