Álvaro Carreras

If he had a bit of pace about him I’d be all for it but I think we’d get slaughtered down his side by any pacy winger

Of all the names we've been linked with for that position, he'd be my least favoured.

Good technical player, but a pretty average athlete, especially for a wingback role that demands a lot physically. With our team being notably substandard in terms of physicality as is, he's the wrong profile of player imo.

That said, I appreciate money is tight and we might have to resort to settling for cheap buys in some positions.

He was very impressive on the ball and defensively. But we're slow and he's not exactly an impressive athlete. I actually think he would be a superb midfielder.

Just do it FFS. Fed up with all this fannying around - trying to negotiate with clubs trying to rip us off as always.

About time we start untangling the clusterfeck of a mess ETH left us.

Antony gone, Alvaro back, Amad tied down.

We still have a long way to go.

The 'Alvaro Fernandez is slow/weak' is a reverse mantra of the Sancho situation where people insisted for literally years when he was at Dortmund that he was some speedster, beat a man, bums off seats winger.

Does a buy back option mean we can just buy him no matter what? Surely Benfica and the player would need to want to do it to?
Honestly I have no idea how it works.
Buy back clause is a fixed value that if the buying club meets the potential seller doesn't have a say in denying. It's still always up to the player if he wants to leave or not, like Zubamendi to Liverpool in the summer.

It's not a meme because he is slow, he's not weak though.

Said a few times there is no guarantee his buyback is active in this window and it looks to be the case:

He's not weak but he would probably be in trouble often against many of these pacier wingers in the league

Would he want to come back?

Speaking to DAZN Portugal after the match, as relayed by Record, Fernandez was asked about a transfer away from Benfica after being linked with a return to United.

Fernandez said: “No. Actually, you never know, but I have a contract for many years here at Benfica, I’m happy. They gave me the opportunity to grow, and I owe everything to them.”

He's not particularly weak, but he is very average paced.

This isn't some obscure player we've only seen glimpses of. We've actually seen him play, and we had years of reports about his progress. We know his lack of speed was for a long time seen as a potential issue for him.

Was always a bit dumb to loan then sell a promising left back a year ago for peanuts when we were having a left back crisis. Not sure how using a buy back impacts the whole financial thing and the little bit we gained from selling him in the first place.

Ineos correcting their mistake is probably the smarter thing to do than spending 40m on Dorgu if the buy back is active now. We need to show we will move on from targets if teams ask for too much. Simply paying up every time means nothing will ever change.

We did with Branthwaite so will be interesting to see if we have someone else lined up, or perhaps we should probably wait for the summer as whoever comes in now is unlikely to be the difference of getting us a European spot for next season.

Rob Dawson isn't a credible source not in the slightest wouldn't pay any heed to it .

Marcos Alonso wasn't exactly super athletic. I do agree with your assessment about us needing more physicality, but I think we lack that in the middle primarily.

We need a high energy, all action midfielder in the middle next to Ugarte. Fred of a few years ago would've been great in this system.

Yeah that one was a bit weird though. Bid what, 35-40m for Branthwaite and then signed Yoro for 60-70m? Usually when you move on you go to a cheaper target but TBF we got what they felt was the better talent.
