Quotes from Charlie Nicholas on Sky regarding the game

I thought Harry Maguire was average, he did everything that was asked of him. He was efficient and got about the pitch, but I don't want to hear nonsense about him being a leader and strong on the pitch already, it is too soon. He has started well, but I am suspect about the right-back and left-back positions at Man Utd. Chelsea could have easily scored two or three. I am still not convinced by Manchester United and I would still sell Paul Pogba.

Is he not aware Maguire was winning everything in the air last week and that we spent £50m to improve our right back options :wenger:

 unreal. One of the most bias opinions going.

If Maguire, AWB and Pogba rocked up at Arsenal tomorrow he'd nut himself to death.

Outrageous comments really, or illogical at the least. He hates United so much, but he's only started to properly show it these last 2 years. This makes Merson seem tame. He must be worried about us.

The only thing he is right about is it being too soon to properly judge Maguire... even though he says he was average at the beginning

I said it before but i'll say it again, I hate monday matches. Anyone else?

Undermining our performance against Chelsea has been the case the whole week from the lot of the pundits/journalists. I've heard our performance called "distinctly average", "lucky to win", "Maguire was just ok" etc etc. They just seem to disregard Chelsea only really created one good chance (one that Abraham couldn't reach from Mount's cross?) and the two times they hit the crossbar/post were good shots and not good chances. Even the loved xG stat of 2.5 vs 0.9 shows that.
So I just try to laugh at those sort of comments really.

It will be really interesting to see how Ole will prepare this game.

Should we play our "normal" game and try to counter them ? Do we start deeper in order to play like them ?

I actually think that we don't have enough control in midfield to play high and press them, so it would be safer to play deeper, try to absorb the pressure and counter them, but we saw that they play pretty low, with high intensity in midfield and quick counter attacking football.

Why not playing in 3-5-2 and clearly use their approach, with Martial and Rashford uptop, maybe Pogba behind them (or Jlingz)

We battered them in the league game for the first quarter and should have been 2/3 up. Once we gifted them a poor goal we lost shape and heart. The sending off did us finally.

Not sure we'll make the same mistake again

Yep, Chelsea didn't deserve that scoreline, It would have been different if Abraham scored.. But was it a clear cut chance? no?

So Liverpool go an win on penalties, Chelsea hit the bar and Abraham missed almost a tap in but none of that is being mentioned about Liverpool's win.

I think there is alot of people who are ready to jump on Manutd this year. I can see people saying:

    £80m Maguire - :lol::lol:

If there was one season I want to finish above Liverpool, it would be this.

How is Shaw a good player? Rarely beats a man and always hits the ball against defenders shins.. as well as left sided cb always having to cover for him. I don’t think I ever saw him make a quick pass out of defense either, he dribbles running towards martial with the ball and releases it within a few yards of him.

Beginning to really agree with this, lately he has become our left sided version of Valencia (when he was playing his worst stuff at fullback)

I still want to see two behind Pogba to get the best out of him.

    Martial
    Rash - Pogba - Lingard
    Matic/Fred - McT
    Shaw - slab - Lindelof - awb
    DDG
Matic got overrun in midfield last season. 2 workhorses behind Pogba not a donkey

He got overrun next to Pogba.

By the same token, you could say that Pogba got overrun since he's even less of a workhorse and he also played in the same midfield 2.

Matic and McTominay wouldn't be my ideal, but they're a good enough platform for Pogba in front.

    -------------De Gea -----------
    AWB ---- Lindelof ---Maguire ---shaw
    ----------FRED--------
    MCtom--------------------Pogba

What makes you say Pogba needs 2 behind him to get the best out of him?

For France he plays in a 2 with Kante.

For Juve he played part of a 3 with Pirlo behind.

I'd be really annoyed if Pogba was moved upfield again. Him quarterbacking from a deeper role and having Martial / Rashford run in was beautiful and we should try to do more of that. Keep Pogba at #8 and McT at #6 as our first choice midfield pairing and figure out who we want to play in Pereira / Lingard roles.

I personally would give Pereira a couple more games even though he wasn't that effective against Chelsea.

Spot on. I can't believe the number of people who want to play Pogba in a No. 10 role. Hes he works there because he has brilliant vision BUT he gets marked out the game. You cannot have your best player getting marked out.

Him playing deep gives us different options, he can pick it off the defenders and set our 3 forwards away. He can play as a further up when teams sit deep but still as a 8.

Do you realise who you just mentioned next to Pogba?

    Plays like 2 players

Why do we need 6 defensive players?
We don't. Poster mentioned Kante next to Pogba. We haven't got a player as great as Kante to do the work for Pogba. We haven't even got a Matuidi.

Anyone thinking Matic should be fielded because he was a good DM is setting us up for a fall

    Same team, surely.

I'm a bit nervous, we need to start stronger than we did vs Chelsea. First half against Chelsea was poor great and Ole said himself, we were lucky to go in ahead at the break. Wolves are a difficult side to break down and going a goal down will be difficult to recover.

Need a big and improved performance from the Midfield, if Pereira does get the nod, he really needs to be more on his game and same for Pogba.

I agree Kante is a different gravy, but we are going up against a 3-5-2 Wolves team.

They will most likely sit back and counter. If we have 2 holding players, how are we going to create anything or even pull them out.

At least with Pogba slightly deeper there is that threat that Pogba can play any sort of pass forward so they will push to close him which will open spaces for others. If Pogba is playing as a 10 with 2 holding behind him it makes it so easy to mark him out the game.

On my way out so a quick one-liner from me: I think this is the game we will see the high press agressive ball retrieval game from pre-season games against Tottenham and Inter.

If we sit back and wait to counter, the game will end in a nil-nil draw, everyone having stared at the ball sitting in the middle of the field, unkicked, for 90 minutes.

Seriously, though, Ole will be more aggressive in this game. Our back line is so much better than what we had for last year's losses. Our attack is ticking. I don't know that you can even say our midfield is that much, if any, worse.

I'd swap Pereira for James for much needed width against Wolves compact defensive / counter attacking side.

Pretty confident going into this one, anything other than 3 points will be disappointing. Wolves are a good team but last time we played them the match should have been put away within the first 20 minutes. Both of their goals came from mistakes and after that dumb challenge that got Young sent off.

I really hope so. The Inter Milan game especially, we were tremendous with our high pressing. Inter virtually couldn’t live us and were just simply kicking the ball out of play just to get out of danger.

If we play with that same sort of aggression when we don’t have the ball, Wolves won’t be able to live with us.

I think Ole will play Pereira in this one as well. Unlike some, I thought he was very effective along with McT against Chelsea, with his constant pressing, not to mention his crossing might be the best on the team.

Aside from that, Ole might be thinking he wants to load up on long range shooters outside the opposition's box seeing that Wolves will most likely just sit deep. Once again, Andreas' long ranger is on par if not better than most of our players. I think we will see quite a few cracks from him and Pogba and Rashers.

I don't think Periera is suited to the number 10 role and it showed in his first-half performance. He fared a little better when he switched with Lingard at right-wing, setting up Martial for the second, but his overall game didn't seem up to the mark. I'd like to see Gomes given shot at number 10 as he was effective throughout pre-season in that role, but I think Ole will likely go for Fred. I agree with you regards loading up on long-range shooters though. It may be our best option so we will want Pogba in an advanced role as he one of the best long shots on the team.

For me, the team would be:

    DDG
    AWB - Lindelof - Maguire - Shaw

    Mctom

    Pogba - Fred
    James - Martial - Rashford

All 3 of the forwards are effective anywhere along the front line, so I'd give them license to interchange at every opportunity.

Feck Wolves and feck their cocky fans.

Matic's job is defending so the onus is on him to provide what Pogba lacks.

A defender defends. An attacker attacks. A mdifielder does both.

If Pogba is not expected to defend, he's not a midfielder. He shouldn't be played in midfield 2.

According to your characterisation, Matic was playing in a midfield 1. You can't blame him for being overrun in that scenario when he was outnumbered by 2:1 or 3:1.

Midfield does both. However, the midfield is the sum of its parts. Pogba provides a certain role of the midfield at a really high level. The same cannot be said of Matic. Pogba does not get carried. Matic gets carried. He does nothing at a high level. The same could be said of McTominay, but where McTominay compliments Pogba is his energy. He can't cover for both Pogba and Matic. But as I said, Pogba provides one of the midfield's roles single handedly.

If you were going to name one thing the midfield does really well, you would sooner say it provides creativity, thanks to Pogba.
