Fred and McT are natural box to box CMs, a very good fit in a 2 man midfield. Pogba and VdB are not. That's why Fred-McT are chosen regularly, because they are a better fit, not because "they are not good enough to play as the lone DM" or because "Ole is negative by playing 2 DMs". In a 2 man midfield, you hardly ever get a lone DM, and both CMs have to contribute. That's why Pogba and VdB struggle their at times, and McT and Fred are the best options there right now. They are just natural CMs, which we dont have much at our club.

Can a natural CM be as poor at passing as they both are? If one was poor and one was good you'd say fair enough.

But they are both poor at controling a game.

For naturals they aren't that natural at the most important part of being a CM

There’s a lot of internationals out there, that doesn’t mean they’re good enough for us. It is absolutely a risk playing someone that hasn’t shown anything away at West Ham.
Correction, has not been given the opportunity to show what he can do.

I like this lineup. This might be our best possible lineup at this moment in time. We should win.

They are chosen because we don't have a Kanté-style defensive midfielder to put alongside Pogba in the midfield.

Even France put a third midfielder alongside them. Pogba is not a natural CM, and that's not Fred or McT's problem. Fred/McT would be fine next to a proper DLP like Jorginho/Veratti, and they wont need a "pure DM". Also, Kante is not a DM who sits either, he's a box to box ball winner.

We dont play with a DMF, we play with two CMs. And also, Pogba is better as a LW than as a CM. Fred and McT are our best CMs. Its not their fault that Pogba and VdB struggle at CM. Play Pogba at CM and watch us get annihilated in the counter like against Wolves or Newcastle.
You are missing the point. The fact that we don't have a proper DMF and are instead playing with a defensive pair of generic CMs is exactly the problem. Pogba is a great #8 when we have a proper #6. We just don't have even half-decent #6. If we wanted Pogba to play on the left wing, why the hell did we buy Sancho? We are going to have too many attackers when Rashy comes back and the most lousy midfield in the entire league.

Really looking forward to this game, Ole cannot complain, that bench looks great on paper, Sancho, Martial, Donny, mata, Lingard ....

McFred being back together was as nailed on as night following day. Was hoping Varane would end that but I feel we will see it more often than not. It's the Ole way.

Really need a win, I don't think a point is good enough personally. 10 or 11 points from 15 in these first 5 fixtures will hardly be a great return when we still haven't really played anyone good - as in a top 6 side.

Tough one to call so I'm sitting on fence with a 1-1 or 2-2.

They are not good passers, but then again someone like Gattuso or Henderson are not known for their passing either(although they are better players/passers than McFred). They are box to box ball winners, and need a passer alongside them that can control the tempo like a Pirlo for Gattuso and a Fabinho/Thiago for Henderson or Scholes alongside Fletcher.

Yet he has been much much better in the pivot than Fred has this season......

Keep prepetuating this nonsense. He can do it and he did it very well versus Newcastle. It's all about setting up correctly

Fred costs as many games and is more limited on the ball.

It boggles the mind, doesn't it? How anyone thinks Pogba can't do a job there.

I must have missed Moyes having turned West Ham into Europe's finest...One destroyer should be more than enough against West Ham, whether that's Fred or McSauce.

Gets given way too much benefit of the doubt.

It's likely cause people expect so little from him that shite performances are just forgotten about constantly

He runs around a lot, and isn't particularly great at much else and people settle for this because they like guys who show 'heart'.
    It's so cliched.

McFred has to be a bit overkill for West Ham away considering they're missing Antonio.

I suppose they're doing well this season so the caution is justified but I'm expecting a fairly cagey affair here. Has a 1-1 written all over it.

Exactly so you said it yourself. Though you could also argue they are bit good enough in General either.

Personally I see McTominay improving and am fine with him.

Fred though is a lost cause in my book. He has the same flaws he always has.

For this season I'd give Pogba and McTominay a good run of games together as soon as Rashford is back. It's our best hope.

I love how skysports come back from an advert to say "Coming up next" and go to another advert break.

I really like the lineup and very eager to see how it works out as it might be our a team going forward

Its a very winnable game doubt we face much difficulty

Pogbas shit in midfield. Everytime we play him there against West Ham we lose. Mctominay and Fred will give us much needed control of the game.
Rice and Soucek are going to bury McFred into the ground, in the midfield. We are going to get overrun there, putting huge pressure on our defense and leaving our attackers disconnected.

We may still survive in this game, because they don't have good enough attackers and somebody on our side may pull a miracle, but if anybody really thinks that we are winning EPL or UCL with fecking McFred as our midfield - wow, I admire your optimism.

If Fred has another shocker today are people still going to stand by him as a must have in there.

Yet to have a good game in the Prem this season.

Good for the second 45 minutes versus Leeds and even them MCTOMINAY was miles better.

Even if McFred gives us solidity in the middle as opposed to Pogba+someone else, I for one, am tired of seeing these duo start together. We aren't reaching another level if we use them consistently this season as far as I'm concerned

The most important player to this team ain't Ronnie, or Varane, or Pogba.... its Scotty.

    Today we will see this

Why are people still whining about mcfred. We didn't sign any midfielders so this is the best midfield we can field that keeps us balanced. Get over it already.

Agreed - they're not good enough. But I doubt we have any better alternatives.

Was it groin surgery Mctominay had? Not the type you want to rush back from if it was.

Love it or hate it McFred is the best midfield we have in 90 percent of the games. The others with low block/very little threat can be Matic/Pogba. These are the only viable options.

I expect a tight game but hopefully a 2-1 win

Match day thread full of confidence and positivity as usual!
