We haven't won a Champions League knockout game since 2011.

We've got to rectify that. And the long road to doing that continues with this,

I don't really buy West Ham being motivated with this being their last home game in the Boleyn Ground. I don't think modern players care about that sort of sentimentality

I think the expectation is more that this will be a huge occasion for West Ham fans, so they'll make it an intense atmosphere and that will motivate their players. Sentiment might not motivate them but noisy home support can boost even the most mercenary of players.

We did beat (just about) Olympiakos under Moyes in 2014. Still, our record since that 2011 final appearance is pretty appalling.

Tomorrows game is massive.
I will be quite nervous going into it.

Knowing that we have been so poor, yet so close to the CL makes this a massive game.
Hopefully Martial will be fit.

Getting the CL spot is a huge bonus, but putting City out, with Pep on his way in is a hinderance to them also, so this is more than just to benefit us

Can't believe we have a good chance of getting in the top 4. I'll be fecking buzzing if we pull it off.

Player's don't need anyone else to motivate them unless they are in a coma.
I think how the manager talks to the team prior to the game sets the tone.. Has to be done the roght way, and i've read numerous times on how Fergie was brilliant at this.. He knew when to say nothing and when to give them a big talk and so on.. I don't think Van Gaal has been very good at building up to games the right way with players, especially vs mid and bottom level teams
I fear that Van Gaal is incapable of motivating players for these kind of games. Feel like we'll bottle it thanks to idiotic team selection and the players not being up for it

I agree, but luckily they shouldnt need anyone to motivate them. Everything that they've put into this season, and whether its Champions League or Europa league next season comes down to Tuesday. If they arent motivated for this then its not LVG to blame.
I think the wrong tactics and saying the wrong things can go a long way in screwing things up too. Like you said this is the kind of game where the players know what needs to be done and i think LvG needs to his talk to a minimum or let Giggsy give them a good rousing speech

Good thing the game's at 2:45 PM EST for me, going to head into work at 6 and leave by around 2 so I can get home and get ready to watch the game.. I'm nervous but still can't wait for the game!

The most important game of the season. Not only to get CL next season (Bournemouth game too of course, but first thing's first) but to keep a semi-finalist Man City just getting ready to welcome Guardiola out of the CL is just incredible. Can't believe it's come to this really.

Ahh, I was thinking of our last match of the 06/07 season against WH. 1-0 loss at home. Tevez scored the goal.
Yep they had our number for a good few games back then and haven't since.

They'll win most of the aerial battles and have a lot of shots on goal. They did against us and again against Swansea. We need De Gea sharp. Shame about Fellaini. I hope Carrick plays really well. It'll be wet I think.

I am just talking about this specific match and the cup final. Players have enough incentive to be up for it regardless.

Incredible that, as shit as we are, we have a chance of top four. No way do we deserve it and no way is our current squad of CL standard. What an opportunity though. Rightly or wrongly we're taking it for granted that we'll do Bournemouth so this game has now taken on seismic proportions with ECL football next season and all that brings now resting on this 90 minutes. It's the equivalent of a big European night but feck me I wish it wasn't West Ham we were playing and it being their goodbye match to that ground. Looks like it's going to be pissing rain too. I'm praying that LVG's big game experience will see us through this - this is no time for anything cavalier just a disciplined, keep it tight, smash and grab the 3 points job I reckon. Immense. Can't wait.

What's so frustrating is that we should have had top four wrapped up aeons ago.

We desperatly need both Rashford and Martial back for this one. Anyone how serious Darmians injury is? With him out, we might see CBJ back as LB and Rojo on the bench. Valencia most likely as RB. Want to see Schneiderlin back in our midfield. Won't be easy at all to win this game, but we just have to, no matter what.

So Fellaini is out, but what about Martial? Also CBJ?

He should be fine, finally got some playtime for the firstteam again against Norwich. Did you think he was injured?

Not seen any update yet (there should be a Presser today?) but from Louis post match comments it sounded precautionary (tightness or whatever), especially with this being the harder game so I am quite hopeful

Yeah, I really can't see us winning this.

We'll probably draw... which is often what we do when a draw doesn't help us.

-------------------------------------De Gea-------------------------------
--Valencia---------------Smalling--------Blind----------Fosu-Mensah-----
-------------------------Schneiderlin-----Carrick------------------
---Lingard-------------------------Rooney---------------Martial----
-----------------------------------Rashford-------------------------------

Pretty defensive and slow midfield that, but since Herrera hasn't exactly impressed, I guess that might be the actual midfield. Doubt we'll take the chance on putting Fosu-Mensah there at least. Memphis did nothing to deserve to start this match either, but I could see Mata start though. Wouldn't mind seeing Mata in the # 10 and Rooney on the bench. He was weak against Norwich. When it comes to the LB, I'd prefer CBJ over Fosu-Mensah due to his performances there this season and cause he's leftfooted. Fosu-Mensah will probably play as RB or CM, if he'll get some playtime.

Seriously nervous about this game now, we've suddenly got it all to lose. It is going to be so painful, I wish we could just cruise to a 4-0 win and not have any nerves but with the way we play if we are winning it will be a 1 goal lead with us sitting so deep, inviting pressure and we will have to rely on some luck and Dave to win and I can see the same thing happening vs Bournemouth.

Randolph in goal for them again apparently, that's a bit of a bonus for us as he's not as good as Adrian.

This'll be a a completely different game to the weekend's scorchers where some players couldn't be bothered running around as it was so hot.

Just can't see United getting the win they need here. But a draw will at least see things go till the last day and, equally, I can't see City beating Swansea - so still a big chance for us.

We actually have to have shots on target for this to be some sort of benefit though.

Not necessarily, a suspect keeper, which to me Randolph is, changes the way a side plays. They have less confidence in him, he doesn't kick as well as Adrian and from the little I've seen of him is a bit suspect on crosses. He really isn't a great keeper. It's not everything but it's something that helps us a weeny bit.

I realise it's been officially called the Boleyn Ground since forever, but it seems like everyone only started calling it that and that alone about 2 years ago. I swear it used to go by Upton Park pretty exclusively, even with all the media outlets. Did I miss something?

We just have to keep our heads. Against Leicester and Norwich, we've been diabolical. So sloppy and wasteful. Sir Alex used to talk about concentration a lot. The players have to concentrate and try to take each situation as it comes. Play the game not the crowd or the opponent. If you want to get in the Champions League - with all due respect to West Ham - you have to know you are better then them. So let's be positive.

I'm intrigued to see what he'd do with very good attacking players because we are very well organised...but I don't trust him/our scouts to identify those attacking players needed to make his system not mind numbingly dull.

We are so well organized though because we're so negative which has resulted in so few chances created. The club might have it's own ideas but I don't think we should have a problem sacking him. Especially when someone of Joses ability is available.

A literal must-win for LvG, but really, we'll be lucky to nick a one goal lead. I don't even know what to expect anymore, LvG has a knack of getting a win just when we really need one to postpone things turning to complete shit, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if we pulled this one out of the bag with a dull 1-0 again.

The problem is we all know our team is not better than theirs.

Beside the point. We didn't have a better team on paper than City but hey we won! It's all that matters. They only have their swansong at the Boleyn to look forward to, we have UCL. Which should be the greater motivating factor?

I'd like to see Lingard sit this one out, hasn't done much in recent matches and could likely use the rest. Big match, let's hope we can pull it off, it will be a nail biter since we won't win by more than 1 goal and they'll be launching the ball upfield to Carroll.

DeGea

Valencia
Smalling
Blind
Fosu-Mensah (although LVG will play Rojo)

Shneiderlin
Herrera
Rooney

Mata
Rashford
Martial (If he can't start I'd go with Young)

yeah, whats that all about. I had to google it to see if i somehow missed a move to a new stadium at some point. Genuinely had never heard of the Boleyn Ground until this season.
