United need another 3 points tonight because we play Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal in our next 4 games. Everton at home could be classed as being a tough game but, in terms of really tough matches, Chelsea and City will provide a real measure of where this team is at, so any dropped points before those games really damage the team prospects. Van Gaal is fully aware we need a win to
"We have to start with a victory after the international break because we have won the last two games, but West Brom did that too so they also want to win the match. It won't be easy." Another win will bring about some more confidence after hard fought wins against West Ham and Everton going into that Chelsea game on Sunday. There is no psychological benefit from being in fourth at this stage its simple about getting points we need and building confidence into the squad again. I believe the players are responding and do believe in Van Gaal’s methods, but ultimately getting results breeds the type of confidence needed to get United back to the level we belong. The target for the 10th game of the season is to be on 18 points which means we can only afford to drop 2 points in the next 3 games. I think that is a big ask of the players, but I also believe they can achieve that, but it requires not slipping up to a West Brom side that have blown hot and cold this season. Like most sides we face they have little pressure on them. They are unpredictable team but I’m pretty sure they will be bang up for it tonight. This is the type of game United have to win if we want to get back into the Champions League.
Irvine was an underwhelming choice as manager for West Brom fans, but he has done a solid job so far and has proved a decent tactician.
"They play not only long balls but they also play a positional game. They are dangerous opponents. But no opponent in the Premier League is easy to beat.” Van Gaal said. The big tactical questions lie with United. Van Gaal is searching for better balance in the side and now United have defenders fit again will he deviate from the 442 diamond which seems to be his default and return to the 3-4-1-2 system we started the season with in order to give United a better balance defensively? Our biggest threat and best player so far this season has been Di Maria breaking forward from the left-side of the diamond, but I’m expecting to see more from the front three of Van Persie, Falcao and Mata now they have built up some fitness and form. Their combination play could important. West Brom will play one up front and will be looking to stretch us on the counterattack with Berahino’s pace. The problem they may have is getting numbers forward from midfield to support him. When teams have attacked us we have looked nervous and made mistakes in our possession play so I would like to see more control from us in this respect. Blind is an important player in the technical sense of controlling possession although his lack of physical power could be a problem against someone like Sessegnon who is capable of breaking forward powerfully on the counter-attack. On the flanks United lack width, but Rafael and Shaw have been excellent in attacking from full-back. On the defensive side the threat of Di Maria breaking forward into spaces full-backs leave help pin back right-backs, but with Herrera possibly a doubt with a rib injury the right-side may lack a dynamic player with Valencia also injured and Rafael may get overloaded.
What to Look for;
· The system, will Van Gaal revert to a 3-man defence now he has options in defence again?
· Di Maria, by far United best and most exciting player so far this season.
· The combination of the front three. They have yet to find top form or combine well so far this season.
· Can United control West Brom’s counter-attacks and their own possession play better.
· Blind vs Sessegnon.
· The right-side of the diamond, who will play there if Valencia and Herrera are not fit and will this allow WBA left back space to get forward and overload Rafael.
The extra couple of days rest after the international break will have proved useful for Van Gaal and he has good options again. Here would be my starting 11 and subs
